But nevertheless, the chief executives went on to order its executive branch to implement the revised legislation without any review and approval by the Congress/Parliament.  That is exactly what ICANN did.”

In a way it’s reminiscent of Johnson choosing bombing targets in Vietnam. We all know how that ended up.”

Obama on Iran: Diplomacy can work when backed with military threats

“Barack Obama has revealed an exchange of letters with Iran’s new President Hassan Rowhani but warned his reluctance to strike Syria should not devalue US threats of force to thwart an Iranian nuclear bomb.  The US president, in an interview aired Sunday, publicly confirmed the outreach to Rowhani for the first time, and said he believed the Syria chemical arms drama showed that diplomacy could work if backed by threats of military action.  In his interview, Obama said that the outcome of the Syrian deal offered Iran a ‘lesson’ in the benefits of diplomacy.”

U.S. Drones Double Tap, Targeting Rescuers

“The U.S. use of drones in the ‘war on terror’ includes what is called a ‘double tap,’ meaning sending a second drone to the same area, in what amounts to targeting rescuers who are responding to the first attack. This isn’t new, not the action nor the reporting. What does it tell us, that ‘double tapping’ continues, about the decisions of the Obama administration, and the reactions, or lack thereof, from the U.S. public?  Michael Kelly’s conclusion that the fact that double tapping ‘is now normalized as a common tactic of the U.S. drone war is stunning’ seems accurate to me. But I’m also not stunned that more people aren’t stunned by this ‘normalcy.'”

NSA routinely spied on phone records unrelated to terrorism cases

“US intelligence officials declassified documents Tuesday revealing the National Security Agency violated privacy rules for three years when it sifted phone records of Americans with no suspected links to terrorists.  The government was forced to disclose the documents by a judge’s order after a Freedom of Information lawsuit. The NSA had been permitted by the court to only search phone numbers that had ‘reasonable articulable suspicion’ of having links to terrorism.  But out of more than 17,000 numbers on a NSA list in 2009, the agency only had reasonable suspicion for about 1,800 of the numbers, two senior intelligence officials told reporters on Tuesday.”
