Women posed as fake brides to scam ISIS out of $3000

“It started a few months ago, when one of the women – whose first name is Mary (or Maryam), according to Life News Russia – got a message on a social network from a stranger.  The young man said he was from Syria. After correspondence went back and forth for a while, he invited Mary to drop everything and start a new life with the militants.  Sure, sounds great, Mary said, but no can do – I’m broke.  No problem, he said, and threw some money her way.  Mary allegedly agreed, took the money, and shut down her social media accounts.  According to Life News, the three women had other men to milk, and two other members of the Islamic State transferred more money, with similar results.”

How to offshore your credit card with China’s Unionpay

“China created Unionpay 13 years ago to serve as its own interbank for payments.  The unique benefit of Unionpay is that is controlled by the People’s Bank of China and has no relation to the western banking system.  In fact, the Russian government is using the system while they build their own payment system to get away from western systems. One Russian billionaire commented that he got a Unionpay-backed card to protect himself after US sanctions were imposed on Russia.  You can get a Unionpay card by opening a bank account in Mainland China.  Interestingly enough, wealthy Chinese are even using Unionpay for capital flight out of Mainland China.”

China and Russia Lay Foundation for Massive Economic Cooperation

“Russian and Chinese leaders are considering combining their two countries’ regional economic projects — the Eurasian Economic Union and the Silk Road Economic Belt, respectively.  While meeting at a two-day summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Ufa, Russia, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping are reportedly discussing a framework that would merge China’s multi-billion dollar network of roads, railways, and pipelines through Central Asia with the Eurasian Union, the post-Soviet economic bloc that includes Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Russia.”

Could Ukraine default in July next to Greece?

“Next to Athens, Kiev too could fail by the end of July. Now, the Ukrainian government seeks to re-structure its debts. However, little progress has been made in negotiations with the creditors.  Since the beginning of 2015, Ukraine has been facing a deep economic crisis, hit with a national currency devaluation by 70 percent and a massive essential G-D-P drop. As the deadline for the next bond repayment is nearing, the country’s Finance Minister Nataliya Jaresko doesn’t rule out the possibility of Kiev suspending the looming pay-off.”

While the smart money is selling in the US, it’s buying emerging markets

“Private equity (PE) firms are selling stocks at the fastest pace in history.  According to Bloomberg, PE firms have sold $73 billion of their holdings to the public so far this year. Like all investors, PE firms want to sell their investments at the best price possible. So they sell the most when they think the market is topping out. PE firms have access to information that the public doesn’t have.  So when they’re selling, it’s a bearish sign. The S&P 500 has now rallied 204% since bottoming in March 2009. And it hasn’t had a 10% correction in more than three years. Bridgewater Associates, the largest hedge fund on the planet, now has 60% of its portfolio invested in emerging markets (EM).”

Russia Bans the Internet Archive’s ‘Wayback Machine’

“The Russian government has blocked the Internet Archive, the San-Francisco-based website that provides the popular Wayback Machine, which allows users to view archived webpages. The decision to ban the Internet Archive appears to be the work of Russia’s Attorney General, meaning that police determined that the website contains extremist content. Because the Internet Archive uses https, some Russian ISPs will have to block the entire website in order to comply with the blacklisting, since encrypted traffic won’t allow them to differentiate between different pages of the same site.”

Russia boosting gold holdings as defence against ‘political risks’

“Russia is increasing its gold holdings because gold is a reserve asset that is free from legal and political risks, a senior central banker said on Tuesday.  The comments by Dmitry Tulin, who manages monetary policy at the central bank, reflect Russian fears that the country’s overseas assets could be frozen as part of a possible toughening of Western sanctions over the Ukraine crisis.  ‘As you know we are increasing our gold holdings, although this comes with market risks,’ Tulin told lawmakers in the lower house of parliament.  ‘The price of it (gold) swings, but on the other hand it is a 100 percent guarantee from legal and political risks.'”

Thousands of pro-govt protesters rally for Macedonian PM

“Tens of thousands of demonstrators came together to show their support for Macedonian Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski on Monday. The rally follows mass anti-government protests, whose opponents claim are being funded and instigated from abroad. If Gruevski does not resign, ‘Macedonia will face a war, just like Ukraine,’ Opposition Social Democrat leader Zoran Zaev threatened over the weekend, as quoted by RIA Novosti. Back in February, Zaev released illegally gathered wiretaps which allegedly exposed the government in breaking democratic rules. The prime minister refuted the allegations, saying the tapes had been doctored.”

This Bizarre Russian ATM Wants to Lend You Money

“This strange kind of ATM began popping up at railway stations and shopping malls around Moscow last year. It looks like a regular cash machine, but it’s designed to accept loan applications and dole out money on the spot.  There are currently about 20 automated loan machines installed throughout Moscow. They allow customers to request as much as 15,000 rubles ($241) that must be paid back in 20 days or less. The interest rate is 2 percent a day, which works out to 730 percent on an annualized basis. That may seem insane, but some Russians have been willing to embrace the technology to make ends meet between paychecks.”

$50bn Asian infrastructure bank approves 57 founding members

“The China-led Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) has approved 57 countries as founding members after including an extra seven, according to China’s Finance Ministry. The AIIB is an ‘open and inclusive multilateral development bank,’ China’s Vice Finance Minister Shi Yaobin was cited as saying by Xinhua news agency. The 57 founding members cover five continents, including Asia, Oceania, Europe, Latin America and Africa, according to Shi. The founding members will have priority over other countries which might sign up later, as they possess the right to establish the rules for the bank. Russia became a founder of the AIIB after applying for membership.”
