28 Detroit houses selling for $500 at county auction

“Nearly 15,000 homes, businesses, churches and industrial buildings in Detroit are up for auction for a minimum $500 bid.  This is the second and final round of Wayne County’s annual tax-foreclosure auction.  Some of the properties are abandoned and gutted, while others would fetch more than $85,000 in any other community.  The auction kicked off this week and ends between Oct. 21 and 25.  This is part of our continuing coverage of an auction that could help or hurt the struggling city.  Check out Why Don’t We Own This? to view all of the properties up for bid and to use some nifty mapping technology.”

Detroit Bus Company Helps Detroiters Get Around

“When it appeared in 2012 that plans to put even a 4-mile streetcar line through downtown Detroit were dead, Andy Didorosi was fed up.  Only 25 at the time, he was already a serial entrepreneur in Detroit, launching a co-working space called Paper Street, a local racing event called the Thunderdrome and numerous other projects.  So he bought a bus, hired graffiti artist Kobie Salomon to paint it, and named it Bettis. That old school bus became the Detroit Bus Company, Didorosi’s first experiment to show how mass transit could be improved in Detroit.”

‘HELP: Detroit is Waiting to be Rescued!’

“If I believe the sensationalist media, the city where I have spent my half-century on earth is barely recognizable to me anymore, thanks to the fourth estate bobbleheads who have either never step foot here, or, they take a moment to zip through the city via their hired limousines just long enough to have their camera crew photograph some background ruin porn while they spin their melodramatic tales of Detroit’s long, slow, harrowing demise due to bankruptcy woes, oodles of $100 houses falling into disrepair, dead bodies percolating from the ground, and lastly, angry packs of feral dogs (in gangs of 20) roaming the streets and eating humans as appetizers.”

Detroit Bus Co. moving in the right direction

“In early 2012, when Detroit’s dysfunctional bus system was all over the news, Andy Didorosi founded the Detroit Bus Co. with three buses and the hope he could do something to help our carless citizens who wait in frustration for buses that can be hours late and sometimes don’t come at all.  He got lots of press and even a citation from Detroit City Council for stepping in to help.  Now a year and a half into the bus biz, Didorosi has found a way to give Detroiters a service they really need. The Detroit Bus Co. is building a program to pick up kids at ‘safe spots’ and drive them to summer and after-school programs and bring them safely home.  The buses run on biodiesel.”

Quicken Loans founder: Detroit bankruptcy a ‘step toward a better and brighter tomorrow’

“Dan Gilbert, whose affiliated companies own more than 30 buildings and 7.5 million square feet of real estate in downtown Detroit, said the city’s apparent move toward bankruptcy is a ‘first step toward a better and brighter tomorrow for our city.’ His full statement is below. The Quicken Loans founder, a self-described optimist, has been investing in Detroit at an unrelenting clip for at least the past three years.  Gilbert’s umbrella company, Rock Ventures, which includes some 75 companies, now employs about 9,200 people in downtown Detroit, and has a total workforce of about 15,000 employees nationwide.”
