Say hello to intelligent pills

“This product, called Helius, will include ‘sensor-enabled tablets’ to monitor patients’ medication use. Compliance with doctors’ instructions has been identified as a problem area in medicine, especially when patients are prescribed multiple drugs that may need to be taken at different times.  Proteus has designed sensors called ‘ingestible event markers’, which can be taken with pills or incorporated directly into medicines as part of the manufacturing process.”

Anger after Bill Gates gives £6m to British lab to develop GM crops

“The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has given British scientists a multi-million pound grant to develop GM crops in what could be the most significant PR endorsement for the controversial technology. The John Innes Centre in Norwich has received £6.4m for a five-year project to engineer cereals such as corn and barley to extract nitrogen from the atmosphere, rather than relying on ammonia-based fertilisers.  But the decision by the Gates Foundation to invest substantial funds in technology that has been promising an agricultural revolution for almost two decades provoked anger last night.”

Antarctica once covered in palm trees, scientists discover

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Antarctica%20tropical%20paradise1.jpg

“An intense warming phase occurred 52 million years ago, leading tropical vegetation, including palms and relatives of today’s tropical Baobab trees, to grow on the continent’s now frozen coasts.  The surprising discovery came from a study of drill cores obtained from the seafloor near Antarctica. The results, published in the journal Nature, show that warm ocean currents and high carbon dioxide (CO2) levels in the air boosted temperatures, allowing tropical vegetation to grow where visitors today meet only icebergs and freezing cold.”

Of Coconuts, the Sun, and Small Isolated Islands

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/ge-tokelau-overview2.jpg

“For a few years, I managed a combination of businesses on a very remote 100 hectare (250 acre) South Pacific island. I know the problems of supplying fuel in remote islands in the most intimate and personal way, because I was the person who had to arrange the fuel supply, the guy who took the heat when it ran short. I have also looked very, very closely at the economics of coconut oil as an energy source.  As a result, I was both glad and sad to see that the island nation of Tokelau was switching their entire energy system to solar power plus coconut oil … because Tokelau is definitely in the middle of nowhere.”

Fools’ Gold Found to Regulate Global Oxygen

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/300px-Iron_disulfide_pyrite1.jpg

“Pyrite is an iron-sulfur mineral (also known as fools’ gold), which forms when microbes in seafloor sediments use the sulfur dissolved in seawater to digest organic matter. The microbes take up sulfur in the form of sulfate (bound to four oxygen atoms) and release it as sulfide (with no oxygen). Oxygen is released during this process, thus making it a source of oxygen in the air.  The implication of these findings is that the sulfur cycle regulates the atmospheric concentration of oxygen more strongly than previously appreciated.”
