The Latest Pot Myth, Smacked Down By Science

“Will the publication of this latest study put to rest the false notion that medical cannabis legalization stimulates non-medical pot use? Probably not, but it is a start. Notably, government officials seem finally to be getting the message. Speaking to the Tampa Bay Times last month, the deputy director of the US National Institute on Drug Abuse acknowledged, ‘We cannot draw a clean link between medical marijuana and shifting drug usage rates.’  He’s right and it’s high time for the likes of David Evans and Kevin Sabet to stop shamelessly claiming otherwise.”

Fight Back Against Hidden Regulations That Threaten Your Health

“It’s ironic, sadly ironic that the amendments were passed in order to prevent the Thalidomide type tragedy. And here we go folic acid, a ‘B’ vitamin, was shown to prevent spina bifada and other really tragic problems in young children. Folic acid manufacturers were told if they talked about this they would be shut down because they hadn’t gone through all these hoops that pharmaceutical drugs go through.  And if you make a claim you can prevent disease in the U.S. you have to go through the FDA process because commercial speech is not protected.  So that was very sad; about 25,000 babies were probably born with these defects that they didn’t need. And many more were aborted.”

Climate Change and Captain Kirk

“Of course, we aren’t seriously proposing government subsidies on the grounds that CO2 emissions confer ‘social benefits’ that aren’t being fully internalized by the emitters. The point is that even taking the Administration’s case on its own terms, it’s not even clear that CO2 emissions are a bad thing. And to repeat, we’re running 2 of the 3 computer models that the Obama Administration team used to come up with these figures for federal agencies. Last point: You might wonder why they (and I) didn’t try peeking under the hood of the third model, the so-called PAGE model. The answer is that it’s proprietary, and the creator (Chris Hope) doesn’t make the code publicly available.”

Study: At least 4.1% of U.S. death row defendants are innocent

“The high rate of exoneration among death-sentenced defendants appears to be driven by the threat of execution, but most death-sentenced defendants are removed from death row and resentenced to life imprisonment, after which the likelihood of exoneration drops sharply. We use survival analysis to model this effect, and estimate that if all death-sentenced defendants remained under sentence of death indefinitely, at least 4.1% would be exonerated. We conclude that this is a conservative estimate of the proportion of false conviction among death sentences in the United States.”

Drinking diet soda may trim your lifespan; linked to heart disease

“This is not the first study to report such findings. A 2012 study by French researchers published in ‘The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition’ found a strong correlation between diet drinks and increased risk of Type 2 diabetes. Women who drink ‘light’ beverages tend to consume 43% more than women who drink normal sugary drinks, it concluded. What’s more, when consumed in equal quantities, artificially sweetened drinks were associated with an increased risk of developing diabetes.  The global market for artificial sweeteners is projected to reach $1.68 billion by 2018 from $1.39 billion in 2012, according to market research group Global Industry Analysts.”

Study: Drug Dogs Most Likely To Err In Traffic Stop Scenarios

“Dogs trained to detect the presence of illegal drugs are most likely to provide false alerts in situations involving the search of a motor vehicle, according to the findings of a study published online in the journal Forensic Science International.  Drug dogs’ failure rates were even more pronounced in situations where the animals had access to the inside of a vehicle. In this scenario, dogs correctly responded to the presence of contraband only 58 percent of time. They provided false alerts 36 percent of time.  In 2005, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Illinois v Caballes that an alert from a police dog during a traffic stop provides a constitutional basis for law enforcement to search the interior of the vehicle.”

Health Czar Shows Amazing Ignorance About Marijuana

“In the Internet era, members of the general public have unprecedented access to scientific facts and figures. Among the resources now available at one’s fingertips is the National Center for Biotechnology Information database. NCBI is an NIH.gov electronic search engine that allows the public to instantly read the abstracts of hundreds of thousands of peer-reviewed scientific papers on virtually any subject, including an estimated 20,000 papers on cannabis alone.  So why then does the head of the National Institutes of Health purport to know so little about the science of pot?”

A low saturated fat diet ‘will not prevent heart disease or prolong life’

“Health professionals recommend following a diet low in saturated fat. But a leading US cardiovascular scientist says that adopting such a diet does not curb heart disease or prolong life.  In an editorial recently published in the BMJ journal Open Heart, Dr. James DiNicolantonio says the consumption of saturated fat was first criticized back in the 1950s.  But Dr. DiNicolantonio says the findings of this research were flawed. He notes that the study author reached his conclusion using data from only six countries, choosing to exclude data from 16 countries that failed to fit his hypothesis. However, Dr. DiNicolantonio says this data ‘led us down the wrong ‘dietary road’ for decades to follow.'”

Hundreds of nonsense articles found in peer-reviewed science journals

“Two major science publishers, Springer and IEEE, are in the process of removing more than 120 published studies from their databases after they were discovered to be SCIgen-generated nonsense.  Eric Merkel-Sobotta at Springer Science and Business Media told the Star the company had been alerted to 16 allegedly fake articles two weeks ago, and has been working ever since to confirm the claims. Springer publishes over 2,000 journals.  All the papers appeared in peer-reviewed conference proceedings, Merkel-Sobotta said. All the supposed authors had Chinese names, but it’s still not clear whether any or all of them are fake.”

Why It Took More Than 30 Years to Confirm Vitamin C Fights Cancer

“An article in a respected scientific journal confirmed what researchers have known for decades: High-dose vitamin C injections boost the effectiveness of traditional cancer therapies.  The mainstream media acted surprised. But this is old news: In the 1970s, two-time Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling published research linking vitamin C injections to the shrinkage of malignant tumors.  You might think that the FDA – the agency set up to ‘protect’ us from dangerous or ineffective drugs – would have immediately ordered clinical tests to confirm the discovery. Quite the opposite. [..] For the last 30-plus years, official government policy has been that vitamin C isn’t an effective cancer therapy.”
