GM soy and corn feed turns pig stomachs to mush

“If you have stomach problems or gastrointestinal problems, a new study led by Dr. Judy Carman may help explain why: pigs fed a diet of genetically engineered soy and corn showed a 267% increase in severe stomach inflammation compared to those fed non-GMO diets. In males, the difference was even more pronounced: a 400% increase. (For the record, most autistic children are males, and nearly all of them have severe intestinal inflammation.)  The study was conducted on 168 young pigs on an authentic farm environment and was carried out over a 23-week period by eight researchers across Australia and the USA.”

Ex-Monsanto employee involved in discrediting GM corn study

Medical marijuana kids bring Oklahoma families to Colorado

Age 6 at the time, Zoey had the developmental level of a 2-year-old.  Johnson’s father, Marty Piel, is expected to appear at a hearing along with other proponents before Oklahoma state lawmakers on Feb. 12. He said they hope for some kind of narrow exception in the state’s drug laws for children like Zoey.  Mark Woodward, a spokesman for the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs, said the agency is currently opposed to legalizing medications such as Charlotte’s Web. He said the agency believes for safety’s sake, the drug should go through the same federal approval process as others.”

Cannabinoid Protects Against Alcohol-Induced Liver Damage

“The administration of the non-psychotropic cannabinoid cannabidiol (CBD) protects the liver from damage caused by alcohol consumption, according to preclinical data published online in the journal Free Radical Biology and Medicine.  Investigators from China and the US assessed whether cannabidiol administration can protect against alcohol-induced steatosis (excessive fat build up in the liver).  They reported, ‘[C]annabidiol protects mouse liver from acute alcohol-induced steatosis through multiple mechanisms including attenuation of alcohol-mediated oxidative stress … and increasing autophagy (degradation of dysfunctional cells).'”

Cannabis Has Been Studied More Than Many FDA Approved Drugs

“Opponents of legalizing cannabis for medicinal purposes are fond of arguing that the plant must be subjected to the same standards of clinical study and FDA review as conventional medicines.  According to a just-published analysis of some 200 newly FDA-approved medications, few conventional drugs are tested in multiple, large-scale clinical assessing safety and efficacy trials prior to market approval.  By comparison, there exists over 20,000 published studies or reviews in the scientific literature referencing the cannabis plant and its cannabinoids, nearly half of which were published within the last five years.”

Analysis Of National Data Finds No Benefit To Red Light Cameras

“After outlining the statistical flaws in the model used by IIHS, the USF researchers applied more rigorous statistical techniques to the original IIHS data. The revised analysis considered 31 cities without cameras that had fatal red light running crash rates equal to 13 camera cities in the before period (Phoenix was excluded as an outlier). With these changes, the purported benefits of cameras disappeared.  The USF researchers note that their findings are consistent with a number of methodologically sound and independent analyses of red light camera results.”

Departing Space Station Commander Provides Tour of Orbital Laboratory

“In her final days as Commander of the International Space Station, Sunita Williams of NASA recorded an extensive tour of the orbital laboratory and downlinked the video on Nov. 18, just hours before she, cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko and Flight Engineer Aki Hoshide of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency departed in their Soyuz TMA-05M spacecraft for a landing on the steppe of Kazakhstan. The tour includes scenes of each of the station’s modules and research facilities with a running narrative by Williams of the work that has taken place and which is ongoing aboard the orbital outpost.”

Cannabinoids Lead to Leukemia Cancer Cell Destruction

“One new study, from researchers with Saint George’s University of London and published in Anticancer Research, reveals how various compounds within cannabis are able to work together to kill human leukemia cells.  The study looked at three non-psychoactive cannabinoids, including cannabidiol, cannabigerol, and cannabigevarin. These compounds were tested on two leukemia cell lines where they acted synergistically to fight the cancerous cells.  In total, six compounds were tested and each had anti-cancer properties as effective as those in THC. When combined with one another, the compounds had an even greater effect.”

What’s wrong with Science: Nobel prize-winner attacks elite journals

“Randy Schekman, one of the 2013 crop of Nobel prize-winners (for physiology or medicine, in his case), levels two charges against such journals. The first is that, aware of their pre-eminence and keen to protect it, they artificially restrict the number of papers they accept.  Second, he argues that science as a whole is being distorted by perverse incentives, especially the tyranny of the ‘impact factor’, a number that purports to measure how important a given journal is. Researchers who publish in journals with a high impact factor—like the three named above—can expect promotion, pay rises and professional accolades. Those that do not can expect obscurity or even the sack.”
