The Truth About America’s Murder Capital

“The FBI says it is Chicago. Don’t believe it for a minute. The big time murderers are in Washington DC. And they don’t use handguns.”

Not a Peep from Obama: Violent Crime Now at a 42-Year Low

“Last week, the FBI released its national crime report for 2012.  By a slight margin, the nation’s violent crime rate decreased in 2012–relative to 2011–making it the lowest it has been since 1970.  Compared to 1991, when it hit an all-time high, violent crime is down by 49 percent.  The nation’s murder rate was unchanged in 2012; still lower than any time since 1963 and at nearly an all-time low.  Between 2011 and 2012, 24 states and the District of Columbia experienced decreases in their murder rates.  There was no correlation of these trends with the severity of the states’ or the District’s gun control laws.”

Maryland: Court Upholds Traffic Stop Over Third Brake Light

“Police in Maryland can stop and interrogate a driver if he is driving a car with a burned out third brake light. The Court of Special Appeals ruled earlier this month that allowing the car to continue with only two functional brake lights would pose a safety hazard to the public.
The detective said he smelled marijuana and ordered both of its occupants out of the car. As he started looking inside the car, he spotted a handgun that belonged to Smith. Maryland does not allow citizens to carry a firearm except in rare circumstances. Smith appealed the firearms possession conviction, arguing the initial stop was invalid because state law only requires a vehicle to have two functioning brake lights.”

Are Government Schools a Form of Child Abuse?

“Two seventh-grade students in Virginia Beach, Va., were handed long-term suspensions Tuesday that will last until the end of the school year for playing with an airsoft gun in one of their front yards while waiting for the school bus. WAVY-TV reports that 13-year-old Khalid Caraballo and Aidan Clark will face an additional hearing in January to determine if they will be expelled for ‘possession, handling and use of a firearm’ because the guns were fired at two others playing in Caraballo’s yard.  The school’s so-called ‘zero-tolerance’ policy on guns extends to private property, according to the report.”

Judge ejects Sikh from court for refusing to remove ‘that rag’ from his head

“The officers who pulled Singh over believed that his kirpan — a ceremonial ‘sword’ worn by Sikhs that poses as grave a danger to the public as the crosses donned by many Christians — was a ‘dangerous weapon,’ despite the fact that it had been sewn into the waistband of his pants.  Singh tried to educate the lead officer by ‘show[ing] him, and other officers present, videos stored on his phone and on Youtube about the Sikh faith.’ The officers responded with mockery, one of them allegedly referring to Sikhs as ‘depraved’ and ‘terrorists.’  As if that was not humiliating enough, when Singh returned to Pike County to contest his arrest, presiding Judge Aubrey Rimes ejected him from the courtroom.”

Gun gesture leads to suspension for Calvert sixth-grader

“A sixth-grader in Calvert County was suspended for forming his hand into a gun on his bus ride to school, an incident that adds to a string of recent high-profile cases involving punishments for children who gesture with imaginary weapons.  Carin Read, mother of the 11-year-old student at Mill Creek Middle School in Lusby, filed an appeal of the suspension late last week, after a principal denied her request to remove the alleged infraction from her son’s school records.  The boy had already served a day-long in-school suspension, and Read argued that he should not have a permanent record over the matter.”

Gun registry ‘scheme’ among concerns over US signing of UN arms treaty

“The treaty would regulate the $70 billion global trade in conventional arms. The U.S. is the largest arms exporter in the world, and Kerry’s signature was seen as a significant step in pushing it forward. Supporters say the treaty sends a bold global message advocating the first-ever moral standards on the cross-border trade linked to human rights violations around the world. But to some on U.S. soil, the treaty treads into dangerous territory and could step on the constitutional rights of Americans. They point in part to language, at the very beginning of the document, that includes ‘small arms and light weapons’ and worry this could cover firearms owned by Americans.”

Long Shot: Inside the Scope of Smart Weapons

“The company made headlines in early 2013 when it unveiled the precision guided firearm(PGF). Think of it as a long-range, laser-guided robo rifle—as much Linux-based computer as traditional firearm. The PGF’s closed-loop system comprises not just the gun itself, a custom Surgeon rifle, but also custom ammunition and, notably, a proprietary (and WiFi-enabled) scope. The technology packed into TrackingPoint’s initial PGF package is so advanced that we’d heard it could have an inexperienced shooter, maybe even someone who hasn’t ever fired a gun, putting lead on targets at over 1,000 away in mere minutes. Not lifetimes. Not years. Minutes.”

Journalism professor says he hopes for murder of NRA members’ children

“A journalism professor at the University of Kansas (KU) turned to Twitter on Monday to suggest he would like to see the murder of children of National Rifle Association (NRA) members at the hands of a deranged gunman.  A journalism professor has defended tweets he sent out which called for the death of NRA employees children. ‘#NavyYardShooting The blood is on the hands of the #NRA,’ tweeted David Guth, who is an associate professor of Journalism at the university’s William Allen White School of Journalism.  ‘Next time, let it be YOUR sons and daughters, he continued. “Shame on you. May God damn you.'”
