States with toughest gun laws have triple the amount of gun deaths

“The ten states given the highest ratings by the Brady Campaign for having the most stringent gun control legislation have about triple the amount of gun deaths compared to the ten states that have the least restrictive gun legislation, according to data compiled by the Examiner.  Using data from Slate, the Examiner also found that the Brady Campaign‘s highest rated state for having the most restrictive gun legislation, California, also had the highest number of gun deaths(677) since the Sandy Hook shooting.  The state with the fewest restrictions on firearms (and therefore the lowest scored), Utah, has had 29 gun deaths since Sandy Hook.”

Missouri gov. signs gun-safety course for first-graders

“Missouri schools will be encouraged to teach first-graders a gun safety course sponsored by the National Rifle Association as a result of legislation signed Friday by Gov. Jay Nixon.  The legislation also requires school personnel to participate in an ‘active shooter and intruder’ drill led by law enforcement officers.  The legislation also transfers the responsibility for issuing identification cards for concealed gun permits from driver’s license clerks to local sheriffs. That change was prompted by concerns that the state licensing agency’s procedures had infringed on people’s privacy rights.”

Kelly estimates that during his military career he fired 100,000 rounds of ammo. Yet when he recently tried to purchase a .22-caliber rifle at a local Wal-Mart, Kelly was denied – because a computerized background check turned up a misdemeanor marijuana conviction from 1971. As a teenager, Kelly was arrested with a baggie of pot at High School and given a year of probation.”

The Curious Case Of Trayvon Martin’s Backpack With Stolen Jewelry and ‘Burglary Tool’

“The search of Trayvon Martin’s backpack turned up at least 12 pcs of ladies jewelry, and a man’s watch, in addition to a flat head screwdriver described as ‘a burglary tool’. When Trayvon was questioned about who owned the jewelry and where it came from, he claimed he was just holding it for a ‘friend’. A ‘friend’ he would not name.  On October 21st 2011 a burglary took place a few blocks from Krop Senior High School where Trayvon Martin attended. The stolen property outlined in the Miami-Dade Police Report (PD111021-422483) matches the descriptive presented by SRO Dunn in his School Police report 2011-11477.”

A sheriff’s deputy informed Adam that charges of illegal transportation of a firearm, sedition and armed sedition are being considered against him, presumably by federal prosecutors. (Oxford defines sedition as ‘conduct or speech inciting people to rebel against the authority of a state or monarch.’ Eyewitnesses to the attack on Adam and his companions Tuesday night report that US Park Police brought large brown paper evidence bags in with them before their search that appeared to be full.”

First Major Success in Lawsuit Challenging New Colorado Gun Control Laws

“The Independence Institute’s David Kopel is representing 55 elected Sheriffs and one retired police officer in lawsuit against the new anti-gun laws signed by Governor Hickenlooper last March. Tuesday night, on the eve of a federal court hearing, the plaintiffs and the Colorado Attorney General agreed on proposal to fix two problems with the magazine ban.  The successful resolution of these issues was achieved by voluntary agreement with the Attorney General. With these two issues now resolved, we are beginning preparation for a full trial on the merits. The trial will be our challenge to the entirety of the unconstitutional anti-gun laws.”

“A SWAT raid on the property of Adam Kokesh was conducted late Tuesday night on July 9, resulting in the detainment of Adam until his next scheduled hearing where he faces multiple felony charges. Months prior to this year’s 4th of July, Marine Veteran & Libertarian activist Kokesh has called for supporters of the right to armed self-defense to gather in Washington, D.C. to conduct a peaceful armed march. Thousands have reportedly signed up for the protest, which Kokesh says would be a non-violent exercise of the right to open carry.”

Suspension over gun-shaped toaster pastry is now permanent mark on kid’s record

“This week brought more bad news for Joshua Welch, the Baltimore-area second-grader who was suspended for two days because his teacher thought he shaped a breakfast pastry into something resembling a gun.  School officials have denied an appeal to have the suspension expunged from the boy’s permanent record. Welch, who is now eight, was suspended from Park Elementary School for two days in March after he allegedly sculpted the pastry into something that maybe looked like a gun.  At the time, Welch said that his goal was to turn the prefabricated delicacy into a mountain, but that didn’t really materialize.”

Gun-rights activist Adam Kokesh charged with possessing a mushroom near a firearm

“Police searched the Northern Virginia home of activist Adam Kokesh Tuesday evening and took him into custody on for allegedly being in possession of hallucinogenic mushroom while also having a gun, authorities said. ‘Numerous police vehicles, including a light armored vehicle and two low-flying helicopters barricaded Adam’s street,’ the news release says. ‘More than 20 armored SWAT team members surrounded the house, as well as a number of detectives, and plainclothes officers.’ The release says police used a battering ram to knock in the front door and detonated a flash grenade in the foyer, then ransacked the house in a five-hour search.”

Police serving search warrant at home of pro-gun activist Adam Kokesh

“FOX 5 has confirmed that U.S. Park Police along with Herndon Police are serving a search warrant at the home of Adam Kokesh, a pro-gun activist who was seen on a YouTube video posted on July 4th loading a shotgun in Freedom Plaza. Roads have been blocked off in the area of the 1500 block of Snow Flake Court in Herndon and residents have been told to stay indoors while police serve the warrant.  Darryl Young, Kokesh’s roommate and a political activist, defended Kokesh’s actions. ‘The point is we have the right to bear arms in all states,’ he said.”
