“With the numbers before us, you’d think we would at least stop wasting time and money protecting ourselves from terrorism and other bugaboos. The US ‘security’ budget, all in, is a fabulous sum — about $1 trillion a year. It seems foolish. The return on investment is paltry.  By comparison, suicide prevention – as near as we could make out – is barely a footnote in the federal budget, only about $56 million a year. This despite the fact that the risk to the typical reader posed by himself is about 1,000 times greater that the risk from ‘terrorists.'”

FBI releases April 2013 NICS report; January through April renunciations up by 78%

“The FBI released their latest report on Active Records in the NICS Index last Friday. NICS now contains the records of 21,823 persons who renounced U.S. citizenship under INA § 349(5) (or, theoretically, the wartime provisions of INA § 349(6)) and are thus barred from purchasing firearms in the United States. This is an increase of 319 records as compared to March 2013, and 1,169 records since December 2012.  Since last year one additional un-American (or someone using the identity of one) attempted to purchase a gun and got caught during the background check, increasing the total number of denials to renunciants since the inception of the NICS system from 57 to 58.”

“The barrel of the gun is threaded but I wouldn’t expect this weapon to be very accurate. Think of this gun as a controlled explosion generator. It uses a very small .380 caliber bullet which is deadly, to be sure, but quite small. Could I print one? Yes. You can easily download the 3D-printable files from DEFCAD.org (here is a private mirror) and if you have a 3D printer you can easily print any of these parts. The creators built this gun using the Stratasys Dimension SST 3D printer, a high-resolution printer that works similarly to the Makerbot but offers a far finer and more durable print. This printer has a layer thickness of .25mm, however, which the Makerbot can easily match.”

Texas House approves bundle of radical pro-gun laws

“The bills that passed include a measure letting college students over 21-years-old carry weapons in classrooms.  Lawmakers also approved letting schools select employees to carry concealed weapons on campus, and easing the standards for concealed carry permits. The bulk of the bills were targeted at easing restrictions on concealed carry weapons, such as making permit fees cheaper, preventing agencies from asking for detailed information on permit renewals, and restricting fingerprint registries for gun owners. The package of bills also includes a measure that declares all federal gun laws null and void in Texas.”

“The nonprofit group that created the world’s first 3-D-printed gun on Sunday proved that the weapon could be fired.  In a YouTube video published by Defense Distributed, 3-D-printed gun creator Cody Wilson fires a single shot from ‘the Liberator,’ which features interchangeable barrels to handle different caliber bullets. On the first attempt, the pistol showed no damage after firing a single standard .380 round. A second attempt misfired due to a misalignment. A Computer-aided design (CAD) file that would allow others with 3-D printers to create their own handguns was made available for free on Monday.”

3D-Printed Handgun Prompts Congressman To Propose Impotent Legislation

“After Forbes’s Andy Greenberg  broke the news that Cody Wilson and Defense Distributed have successfully created a (apparently) working gun with a 3D printer, Rep. Steve Israel, who has been warning of doom, doom!, should this day come, quickly issued a press release calling for new laws to head off the menace of DIY weaponry. Israel’s objection is, allegedly, that Wilson’s 3D-printed gun is made of ABS plastic, and therefore invisible to metal detectors (Wilson built a hunk of metal into his gun to address this concern, but it could easily be left out).”

Sam Brownback digs in on “Made in Kansas” gun exemption law

“Dozens of states are considering bills that attempt to nullify federal gun laws. One such bill became a law last month in Kansas. It exempts ‘Made in Kansas’ guns from federal regulation and makes it a crime for federal agents to enforce federal law.  Attorney General Eric Holder said the law is ‘unconstitutional,’ and that the U.S. is prepared to sue Kansas to prevent the state from ‘interfering with the activities of federal officials.’ In a letter to Holder yesterday, Brownback wrote: ‘The people of Kansas have clearly expressed their sovereign will. It is my hope that upon further review, you will see their right to do so.'”
