Philly mom faces jailtime due to New Jersey’s strict gun laws

“The single mother of two young children was arrested on weapons charges that could send her to prison for three years.  The charges came after Allen told the officer she had a handgun in her vehicle and has a concealed carry permit issued by Pennsylvania. But that license carries no legal weight in New Jersey, which has some of the nation’s strictest gun control laws.  Allen’s case and others like it have highlighted the legal problems often faced by out-of-state residents who bring weapons to New Jersey, unaware of the rules that govern how guns can be brought into and transported throughout the state.”

Swiss Gun Ownership: The Real Story [2013]

“Although Switzerland is one of the most gun-friendly countries in the world, there have been some misconceptions concerning the rules and regulations governing Swiss gun ownership. In this video, Rex discussed gun ownership in Switzerland with a participant of the Swiss shooting community. Although the shooting culture is very strong in Switzerland today, the laws governing private firearms ownership is more restrictive than many American gun writers make it sound.”

AK-47s become hot commodity after U.S. sanctions

“Here’s a surprising effect of the latest U.S. sanctions against Russia: a run on AK-47s.  Among the companies sanctioned this week was Kalashnikov Concern, the maker of the gun. The Obama administration issued sanctions against Russian companies in response to Russia’s role in a separatist movement in Ukraine. According to the Treasury Department, Kalashnikov Concern is banned from importing its guns — including the AK-47 and more advanced AK-74 — into the United States. But, in a statement posted on its Web site, Treasury said Americans are allowed to own, buy and sell the guns, so long as they were already in the U.S. prior to the sanctions.”

Veteran killed by cop attempting to take his gun for no reason

“Schaefer called 911 about 7:20 a.m. to report that he had shot and killed a pit bull that attacked him, Police Chief Art Acevedo said at a news conference that morning.  Officers asked dispatchers to call Schaefer back and tell him to put his gun in the house before officers arrived. He refused, Acevedo said, and he refused again when officer Jonathan Whitted got to the residence and asked Schaefer to hand over the pistol he saw tucked in his waistband.  When Whitted went to take the gun, Schaefer pulled it out and aimed it at the officer, Acevedo said. Whitted then shot and killed Schaefer.  Two neighbors questioned whether it was wrong for Schaefer to hold onto his gun on his own property.”

First Person Charged, Guns Seized Under Conn. Gun Registration Law

“Police arrested a 65-year-old man in Milford, Conn., after he allegedly shot a squirrel in his yard. Upon further investigation, officers recovered an unregistered ‘assault rifle’ and three ‘large-capacity magazines.’  Now James Toigo faces a plethora of gun-related charges, including unlawful discharge of a firearm, cruelty to an animal, first-degree reckless endangerment, second-degree breach of peace, failure to register an assault rifle and three counts of possessing large-capacity magazines.  The firearm used to shoot the squirrel was not the semi-automatic rifle that police later confiscated. Officers also seized ‘several’ other guns, even though they were not used in a crime and were legal.”

Rancher, armed militias win standoff with Feds; govt returns cattle

“The tense stand-off between hundreds of protesters and police has ended in the Nevada desert, forcing the authorities to cancel the round-up of 300 animals and to return the cattle to their owner.  The standoff between rancher Cliven Bundy and the US Bureau of Land Management has lasted over a week, after hundreds of armed agents with the United States Bureau of Land Management and the FBI turned up in the Clark County to execute the court-ordered confiscation of nearly 1,000 cattle. The US government says the animals have trespassed on federal property.  This provoked a fierce backlash from anti-government groups, right-wing politicians and gun-rights activists.”

What Happened to Chicago’s Murder Rate After Concealed Carry Law?

“In July of 2013, Illinois became the last state in the union to enact a concealed carry law. In January of this year, the state began accepting applications for permits. This week, Chicago police announced that the city’s first quarter murder rate was the lowest since 1958.  Coincidence? Hard to say. And too early to tell. Although, I doubt that the anti-gun crowd is celebrating the good news.”

Inside America’s First Bitcoin-Friendly Gun Store

“Bitcoin has long been the currency of choice for the dark web’sanonymous black market trade in firearms. Now Michael Cargill wants to offer Bitcoin fans a more legal way to buy a deadly weapon with cryptocurrency.  In January, Cargill’s Austin firearm shop and training center Central Texas Gunworks began accepting Bitcoin as an alternative to dollars for all sales, making his store the first legal Bitcoin-friendly firearm retail business in the country, if not the world. He also sells guns for Bitcoin online, opening up his business to bitcoiners around the country. And he’s even installed a Bitcoin ATM in the store’s front room that allows anyone to instantly trade dollars for Bitcoin or vice versa.”

Supreme Court Rejects NRA’s Bid to Block Sunnyvale Gun Law

“The Supreme Court announced this afternoon that Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy, who handles emergency appeals from California and other states in the 9th Circuit, rejected the National Rifle Association’s bid for an injunction to block enforcement of Sunnyvale’s ban on large-capacity firearms magazines.  Last week’s decision by U.S. District Court Judge Ronald Whyte of San Jose, an order rejecting the NRA’s challenge to the magazine ban and upholding the Sunnyvale law, will stand. The NRA, representing five Sunnyvale residents, argued that the ban on magazines holding more than 10 rounds of ammunition violates the Second Amendment-guaranteed right to bear arms.”
