Gun sales hit new record, ammo boom to follow

“Gun records checks, fueled by a post-Newtown boom of gun sales, hit a new high in 2013, and industry analysts expect ammunition to be the big seller this year as consumers catch up to all of those firearms purchases.  More than 21 million applications were run through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, marking nearly an 8% increase and the 11th straight year that the number has risen. ‘2013 was the best year for firearm sales (commercial, domestic) in history — period! That’s true for NH to Hawaii,’ said Richard Feldman, president of the Independent Firearm Owners Association in Rindge, N.H. ‘Ruger alone sold well over one million guns this year.'”

Tech Renegade: From Print-at-Home Guns to Untraceable Currency

“Cody Wilson rattled lawmakers and law-enforcement agencies with a plastic gun created from a 3-D printer, home computer and blueprints he posted online for anyone to download.  Now, the 25-year-old law-school dropout is about to launch software aimed at covering the tracks of financial transactions made with bitcoin, the virtual currency that has exploded in popularity among spenders and speculators—and raised concerns among regulators that it might be used for illegal activity.  Dark Wallet is a no-frills, low-budget push led by Mr. Wilson to make bitcoin the electronic-commerce equivalent of a Swiss bank account.”

Life in the Emerging American Police State: What’s in Store for 2014?

AGOW_WebAD_Small2

“We in the emerging American police state find ourselves reliving the same set of circumstances over and over again—egregious surveillance, strip searches, police shootings of unarmed citizens, government spying, the criminalization of lawful activities, warmongering, etc.—although with far fewer moments of comic hilarity.  What remains to be seen is whether 2014 will bring more of the same or whether ‘we the people’ will wake up from our somnambulant states. Indeed, when it comes to civil liberties and freedom, 2013 was far from a banner year. The following is just a sampling of what we can look forward to repeating if we don’t find some way to push back.”

Wall Street adviser recommends guns, ammo for protection in collapse

“A top financial advisor, worried that Obamacare, the NSA spying scandal and spiraling national debt is increasing the chances for a fiscal and social disaster, is recommending that Americans prepare a ‘bug-out bag’ that includes food, a gun and ammo to help them stay alive.  David John Marotta, a Wall Street expert and financial advisor and Forbes contributor, said in a note to investors, ‘Firearms are the last item on the list, but they are on the list. There are some terrible people in this world. And you are safer when your trusted neighbors have firearms.'”

NRA, gun rights groups target Sunnyvale, California, magazine ban

“If you own an ammunition magazine that holds more than 10 rounds and you live in Sunnyvale, Calif., you can keep it — as long as you also have a second home in another city.  Otherwise, a newly approved ordinance requires owners by March 6 to sell or transfer their magazines to someone outside the city, or surrender them to licensed firearms dealers or police.  California law already bans the sale of magazines holding more than 10 rounds, but Sunnyvale’s ordinance goes a step further by forbidding residents from owning such magazines. Owners who refuse to give up their magazines risk having them confiscated by police, said Orange County attorney Chuck Michel.”

Canada Tried Registering Long Guns — And Gave Up

“Universal registration has been tried in several countries, most recently in Canada. The program turned out to be far more expensive than expected and didn’t have any discernable impact on crime, perhaps because long guns are used so rarely by criminals in the first place.  There was also the question of how registering guns was supposed to reduce crime and suicide in the first place. From 1997 to 2005, only 13% of the guns used in homicides were registered. Police studies in Canada estimated that 2-16% of guns used in crimes were stolen from legal owners and thus potentially in the registry. The bulk of the guns, Canadian officials concluded, were unregistered weapons imported illegally.”

Gun Shoppers Stock Up Before California Long Gun Registry Begins

“A new gun law coming in 2014 has gun owners stocking up on long guns before a new registry begins.  Even though the law is at least temporarily boosting his bottom line, Just Guns owner John Deaser isn’t a fan. He says requiring people to register their rifles and shotguns is an unnecessary invasion of privacy.  In the last week of 2013, he says sales of long guns are up 30 to 50 percent.  The registry goes into effect on Jan. 1, and would require long gun owners to register their weapons like handgun owners already do. It would track the make, model and serial number of the gun, as well as the person who owns it.”

“Colorado: Drivers will see a new annual $50 fee for plug-in electric cars. Colorado is one of several states looking to capture revenue from alternative fuel, electric and hybrid vehicles.  Connecticut: New gun-control laws in the aftermath of the school shooting in Newtown include mandatory registration of all assault weapons and large-capacity ammunition magazines bought before April 2013, and creation of a statewide registry that will track parolees whose crimes involved weapons.  Delaware: Sale, possession or distribution of shark fins prohibited.  Florida: Expanded early voting.  Maine: Becomes the 48th state to require a check-off for organ donation on driver’s licenses.”

RIP Mikhail Timofeyevich Kalashnikov

“Kalashnikov’s most famous invention, the AK-47 rifle and the many guns that duplicate the design, is to-date the most successful firearm of all time, and likely will continue to be for many decades to come.  Kalashnikov was born in Kurya on Nov. 10, 1919, the 17th child of Timofel and Alexandra Kalashnikov, both well-to-do peasants. He grew up hoping to be a poet and has in fact published half a dozen books of poetry later in his life. At the age of 11 Kalashnikov’s family was deported to Siberia and their property was confiscated by Stalin’s Dekulakization regime, where they lived in Nizhnyaya Mokhovaya on the Western Siberian Plain.”

The day the Holocaust began

“When (the Nazis) took power in 1933, they immediately used the (gun registration) records to disarm political enemies.  In October 1938, police agencies in Germany announced that all Jews had to turn in their guns (and) the authorities knew which Jews had guns because they were registered. Having disarmed the Jews, they were able to attack them.  In November 1938, there was the Night of Broken Glass, otherwise known as Kristallnacht. There was an unleashing of the so-called Brownshirt Nazi thugs, who went into Jewish homes and ransacked them under the pretext that they were searching for weapons, which was just that — a pretext.”
