Arijit Vs. Delta

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/ZOMG1.jpg

“We had cleared the security checkpoint without incident, but while waiting at the gate, a Delta supervisor informed me my shirt (this one here, designed by Cory Doctorow) had made numerous passengers and employees ‘very uncomfortable.’  I was then questioned by TSA about the significance and meaning of the shirt. I politely explained that it was ‘mocking the security theater charade and over-reactions to terrorism by the general public — both of which we’re seeing right now, ironically.'”

Russia’s Top Cyber Sleuth Foils US Spies, Helps Kremlin Pals

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Kaspersky_83.jpe

“One of his goals is to persuade policymakers to refashion the Internet into something more to his liking—and, as it happens, something more to the liking of the Putin government as well.  Kaspersky insists that malware like Stuxnet and Flame should be banned by international treaty. He argues that the Internet should be partitioned and certain regions of it made accessible only to users who present an ‘Internet passport.’  The values of openness, freedom, and anonymity became deeply embedded in net culture and in the very architecture of the network itself. But to Kaspersky, these notions no longer work.”

Lost jet skier wanders through JFK airport security

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/jfkairport-shutterstock-615x3451.jpg

“A man whose jet ski died in the waters of Jamacia Bay near JFK International Airport was charged with trespassing Saturday night after he swam to shore, hopped a fence and walked straight up to an airport terminal without the facility’s complex security apparatus making even a single attempt to stop him.  The airport’s $100 million perimeter security system, put together by defense contractor Raytheon Corporation, was specifically designed to prevent this very type of intrusion with an array of motion detectors and cameras littering areas near runways.”

X-Ray Scans at Airports Leave Lingering Worries

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/07scan-tmagArticle1.jpg

“There are 244 full-body ‘backscatter’ X-ray scanners in use at 36 airports in the U.S. They operate almost nonstop, according to the TSA.  A recent study reported that radiation from the machines can reach organs through the skin. The European Union has banned body scanners that use radiation; it is against the law in several European countries to X-ray people without a medical reason. Independent scientists say limited access has hampered their ability to evaluate the systems. In a letter to the federal Department of Health and Human Services dated Oct. 12, 2010, scientists said that ‘the casual nature for maintenance of these devices is alarming to us.'”

Uncovering License Plate Scanners: The Next Big Thing in Government Tracking

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/no_spyn1.jpg

“It is important to note that the most effective uses of ALPR technology (and the ones most frequently touted by law enforcement proponents of the technology) – finding missing children, recovering stolen vehicles, locating fleeing assailants – require virtually no retention of the data.  The privacy issues arise with the retention of the information. A police officer will not forever remember the exact location and time of an innocent motorist’s travels. With ALPR technology, those details can be stored indefinitely, creating an ever-growing historical record of the daily comings and goings of every Marylander.”

Bag with bomb was at FBI building guard desk for weeks

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/120809014845-detroit-bomb-desk-story-top.jpg

“A federal review cites poor judgment by a security guard who found a bag outside a government building in Detroit last year and stashed it under a desk where it remained for weeks — with neither the guard nor anyone else in the building aware that it contained a bomb. The canvas bag, containing a small locked Sentry safe, was discovered February 26, 2011, outside the 27-story building that houses the FBI and other offices and remained at the guard desk until it was identified as a threat three weeks later.”
