“Contempt for the Screening Process”, 91 Other Reasons You’re a Terrorist

“It’s true that TSA’s physical screeners are embarrassingly bad at their jobs, failing to notice 95% of threats in tests by Homeland Security.  But TSA also has Behavior Detection Officers. These super agents can spot terrorists just by looking at them. Now, thanks to a leaked TSA checklist (and scorecard) of suspicious behaviors, you can too!  The document shows 92 different behaviors that can flag you as suspicious — such as being too happy (or too sad); having ‘sweaty palms’ or ‘rubbing hands’; ‘arriving late’ and ‘body odor’; ‘gazing down’ or ‘open staring eyes’ — to which ‘points’ are attached.  If you score six or more points, you win a trip to enhanced screening and a police interrogation.”

TSA Overlooks 95% of Weapons In Security Checkpoint Tests

bruce-blog3

“An internal investigation of the Transportation Security Administration revealed security failures at dozens of the nation’s busiest airports, where undercover investigators were able to smuggle mock explosives or banned weapons through checkpoints in 95 percent of trials, ABC News has learned.  The series of tests were conducted by Homeland Security Red Teams who pose as passengers, setting out to beat the system.”

Smartphone & Laptop Searches: Know Your Rights

“There are a lot of reasons why you might not want an airport security agent to rifle through your computer.  When flying, we consent to put our laptops in separate x-ray bins for inspection. Likewise, depending on the routes we fly, we also consent to turn our phones and laptops on to prove they are genuine. But what about when the scrutiny our devices undergo reaches another level?  We’re going to explore what rights customs and TSA agents have to inspect your mobile devices and computers.”

New ‘Anti-Terror’ Checks On Beijing’s Subway Cause These Lines

“Beijing’s subway network is the busiest in the world, with commuters taking about 10 million rides a day throughout nearly 200 subway stations.  These commuters, who already deal with massive traffic jams, overcrowded public transportation, and air so filthy that biking or even walking to work is often not an option, are experiencing a new obstacle: airport-style security at major subway stations.  On Saturday, Beijing tightened security checks at subway stations following an attack in China’s troubled Xinjiang region which killed 31 people.  Check out the massive lines during rush hour at Beijing’s Tiantongyuan North Station.”

Your Artificial Knee Might Get You Groped

“TSA has certified certain foreign airports as maintaining security measures comparable to those of US airports. Travelers flying into the US from these airports are not put through additional security when they arrive. Nevertheless, security at these airports does notroutinely perform pat-downs on travelers with artificial joints. If the TSA itself has certified that security at these airports is equivalent to that of US airports, how can these searches be essential to safety? The official purpose of TSA security checkpoints is to prevent passengers from carrying weapons and explosives onto airplanes.  Why would a terrorist use someone guaranteed to set off a metal detector?”

Researchers Easily Slipped Weapons Past TSA’s X-Ray Body Scanners

“Two years ago, a blogger named Jonathan Corbett published a YouTube video that seemed to show a facepalm-worthy vulnerability in the TSA’s Rapiscan full-body X-ray scanners.  The TSA dismissed Corbett’s findings, and even called reporters to caution them not to cover his video.  Now a team of security researchers from the University of California at San Diego, the University of Michigan, and Johns Hopkins plans to reveal their own results from months of testing that same model of scanner. And not only did they find that Corbett’s weapon-hiding tactic worked; they also found that they could pull off a disturbing list of other possible tricks.”

H.K. Politician’s Son-In-Law Won’t Face Charges For TSA Impersonation

“When high-powered finance guy Eric Slighton was arrested at SFO after allegedly impersonating a TSA agent and luring women into ‘private screenings,’officials hoped the women he pulled aside would come forward so he could face charges stronger than the public drunkenness and ‘suspicious occurrence’ ones they initially slapped him with. A month later, however, the women have not come forward, and Slighton, who has connections at the very top of Hong Kong’s government, will not be charged.  Reports at the time say that he had entered the security area in khaki pants, a blue polo shirt and blue rubber gloves that officers suspected he swiped ‘to look the part.'”

Woman bypasses airport security on her third try in the same day

“Marilyn Jean Hartman bypassed an agent who was screening boarding passes Monday at Mineta San Jose International Airport by sneaking through with a family, said the law enforcement officials, who would speak only on condition of anonymity because the security breach is being investigated.  Hartman then went through the electronic screening process before entering an airport terminal. Authorities say she made it through screening because she had no prohibited items on her or in her purse.  Hartman, 62, then managed to board Southwest Airlines Flight 3785 to Los Angeles International Airport and was discovered once the plane landed, the officials said.”

Reporter Baffled After TSA Rejects His D.C. ID, Demands Passport

“A TSA agent at the Orlando International Airport demanded to see the passport of Justin Gray, a Washington, D.C., correspondent for central Florida’s WFTV news. According to WFTV, the agent was not familiar with the District of Columbia, and therefore could not accept Gray’s D.C. driver’s license as a valid form of ID.  According to a later tweet from Gray, the TSA has responded by showing every Orlando agent a picture of a D.C. license.  Perhaps surprisingly, this wasn’t an isolated incident. In February, a TSA agent in Phoenix delayed a D.C. resident because the traveler couldn’t present a ‘state-issued’ ID.”

US bans uncharged cell phones, laptops from some flights

“If you’re flying into the US from certain countries, you may discover that getting through security will become even more time-consuming and stressful.  The US Transportation Security Administration revealed on Sunday that enhanced security procedures on flights coming to the US now include not allowing uncharged cell phones and other devices onto planes.  There is no official list of which airports are affected.  The TSA statement said: ‘During the security examination, officers may also ask that owners power up some devices, including cell phones. Powerless devices will not be permitted on board the aircraft. The traveler may also undergo additional screening.'”
