‘CoinThief’ Mac Malware Steals Bitcoins From Your Wallet

“Hidden within the open-source OS X bitcoin wallet app StealthBit, CoinThief.A monitors users’ web traffic to steal login credentials for software wallets and popular bitcoin sites, including BTC-e, Mt. Gox, and Blockchain.info.  The StealthBit app had been available on GitHub both as source code and a precompiled download, but the page has now been removed.  Suspicion arose when investigators discovered the precompiled version did not match the source (which more knowledgeable users could examine for themselves and needed to compile before using). The precompiled version contained the malware, whereas the open-source code did not.”

Fire Destroys Iron Mountain Data Warehouse in Buenos Aires

“Storage and information management firm Iron Mountain has lost one of its main data centers today, according to the Associated Press. Although it’s unclear how the fire started, it spread quickly and took hours to control.  The data center was located in Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina. Among the data stored there were several archives containing corporate and central bank records, a potentially huge loss that could have some surprisingly far reaching consequences. Just last month, for instance, the United States Supreme Court decided to hear a case on whether creditors could seek historic bank records from Argentina regarding the country’s default in 2001.”

Hackers steal Western Michigan University professor’s paycheck

“A hacker had gotten into Cool’s WMU account and changed the routing number for his payments, he said, sending $1,518.62 to a bank in Utah. The crime was traced to a computer in New Mexico, Cool said he was told by detectives at the Western Michigan University Department of Public Safety. There was $11.08 left in the Utah account, which is all Cool has gotten back of his paycheck.  On Dec. 20, WMU issued him a paycheck advance, Cool said, which he is paying back in four installments. However, he said he believes the university should reimburse him for his loss, since it was its system that was hacked.”

Mass hack attack on Yahoo Mail accounts prompts password reset

“Attackers behind the cracking campaign used usernames and passwords that were probably collected from a compromised database belonging to an unidentified third party, according to Jay Rossiter, Yahoo senior vice president of platforms and personalization products.  Yahoo administrators are resetting passwords for all affected accounts. Administrators are also using second sign-in verification to let users resecure their accounts. World of Warcraft, vBulletin, MacRumors, and Adobe are only a tiny sampling of the sites recently hit by attacks that exposed password data. There are many more attacks that go unreported or that can’t be linked to a particular site or service.”

“I had a rare Twitter username, @N. Yep, just one letter. I’ve been offered as much as $50,000 for it. People have tried to steal it. Password reset instructions are a regular sight in my email inbox. As of today, I no longer control @N. I was extorted into giving it up.  Stupid companies may give out your personal information (like part of your credit card number) to the wrong person. Some of those companies are still employing the unacceptable practice of verifying you with the last some digits of your credit card. To avoid their imprudence from destroying your digital life, don’t let companies such as PayPal and GoDaddy store your credit card information.”

If You Used This Secure Webmail Site, the FBI Has Your Inbox

“According to the new document, the FBI obtained the data belonging to Freedom Hosting’s customers through a Mutual Legal Assistance request to France – where the company leased its servers – between July 22, 2013 and August 2 of last year.  The French company also hasn’t been identified. But France’s largest hosting company, OVH, announced on July 29, in the middle of the FBI’s then-secret Freedom Hosting seizure, that it would no longer allow Tor software on its servers. A spokesman for the company says he can’t comment on specific cases, and declined to say whether Freedom Hosting was a customer.”

The FBI Seized All of TorMail’s Data and Is Using It to Catch Hackers

“If you had any faith left in anonymous email services, now would be the time to let that go. New court documents show that in chasing down associates of Freedom Hosting, the FBI managed to download the entire email database of TorMail. And now it’s using that information to take on the Darknet. It’s unknown exactly how many users or how much data is in the TorMail network, but we do know that the FBI has it all. The agency obtained a search warrant for a TorMail account connected to a Florida man accused of stealing credit card numbers in order to search its own copy of the database. It appears that the FBI acquired the database while using malware to investigate Freedom Hosting last year.”

Microsoft remotely deleted Tor-based botnet from 2 Million Systems

“In October 2013, Microsoft adopted a silent, offensive method to tackle infection due to a Tor-based botnet malware called ‘Sefnit‘. In an effort to takedown of the Sefnit botnet to protect windows users, Microsoft remotely removes the older versions of installed Tor Browser software and infection from 2 Million systems, even without the knowledge of the system’s owner.  It was not practically possible for Microsoft or the Government to instruct each individual on ‘How to remove this Malware‘, so finally Microsoft took the decision of remotely washing out the infections themselves.  Microsoft’s action clarifies the capability to remotely remove any software from your computer.”
