CyanogenMod Android firmware gains built-in SMS encryption

“Users of the CyanogenMod alternative Android firmware gained additional security on Monday, thanks to the integration of Open WhisperSystems’ TextSecure protocol.  Open WhisperSystems develops security software that can encrypt voice-over-IP (VoIP) telephone calls and SMS/MMS messages.  Android device owners can install the company’s TextSecure SMS security software by downloading it from the Google Play store. But the company announced on Monday that the CyanogenMod project is also shipping the technology baked into its firmwares by default, beginning with current nightly builds of version 10.2.”

San Francisco Doctor Accepts Bitcoin to Protect Patient Privacy

“Earlier this year, Dr Paul Abramson’s private practice, My Doctor Medical Group in San Francisco, began allowing patients to pay for their care with bitcoin.  The decision has meant that people who want to keep their healthcare private can hide their medical payments from their bank.  ‘Some patients wish to maintain extreme privacy regarding their medical care, and have identified that payment in bitcoin serves that end better than other methods,’ Abramson told CoinDesk.  In November this cosmetic surgery clinic in Florida became the first of its kind to accept bitcoin, while this Argentinian dentist also accepts bitcoin payments.”

Two Guys On Reddit Are Chasing A Thief Who Has $220 Million In Bitcoins

“The thief is currently attempting to hide a stash of at least 96,000 Bitcoins (about $100 million), the pair said in a conversation on Reddit.  The two Reddit users, ‘SheepReloaded2’ and ‘NodManOut’ have become heroes on a subreddit dedicated to tracking the thief.  But there is just one problem (for the thief): His haul is so huge it sticks out like a sore thumb whenever he tries to launder the money. And his pursuers believe he will be unable to cash out a sum that large without revealing himself. ‘He has 1% of the world’s bitcoins. Its hard to clean and sell more than 4 or 5 btc at a time,’ SheepReloaded2 says.”

JPMorgan warns 465,000 card users on data loss after cyber attack

JPMorgan Chase & Co is warning some 465,000 holders of prepaid cash cards issued by the bank that their personal information may have been accessed by hackers who attacked its network in July.  The cards were issued for corporations to pay employees and for government agencies to issue tax refunds, unemployment compensation and other benefits.  Bank spokesman Michael Fusco said that since the breach was discovered, the bank has been trying to find out exactly which accounts were involved and what information may have been compromised. He declined to discuss how the attackers breached the bank’s network.”

Credit card fraud comes of age with advances in point-of-sale botnets

“Underscoring the growing sophistication of Internet crime, researchers have documented one of the first known botnets to target point-of-sale (PoS) terminals used by stores and restaurants to process customers’ credit and debit card payments.  The botnet remained active at the time of writing and had compromised more than 20,000 payment cards since August, researchers from IntelCrawler, a Los Angeles-based security intelligence provider, told Ars.  PoS-based hacking is nothing new. The best-known incident stole data for more than 146,000 cards after infecting 200 terminals used at Subway Sandwich shops and other small merchants.”

‘Bitcoin Mining’ Equipment Firm Took Money & Ran, Investor Says

“A company that sells ‘Bitcoin mining’ equipment folded without delivering the equipment to its customers or refunding hundreds of thousands of dollars in Bitcoin advance payments, a purchaser claims in court.  Howard Loo sued TerraHash Inc., Amir Khan and Tarandeep Gill, in Santa Clara County Court, alleging fraud, unjust enrichment and breach of contract. He claims the company took in more than $600,000 in a single week this summer – $97,000 of it from him, in Bitcoins – then never delivered the goods.”

In the Murky World of Bitcoin, Fraud Is Quicker Than the Law

“The call went out on Twitter: ‘For insane profits come and join the pump.’  It was an invitation to a penny stock-style pump-and-dump scheme — only this one involved Bitcoin, the soaring, slightly scary virtual currency that has beckoned and bewildered people around the world.  While such bid ’em up, sell ’em off scams are shut down in the financial markets all the time, this one and other frauds involving digital money have gone unchecked. The reason, in no small part: Government authorities do not agree on which laws apply to Bitcoin — or even on what Bitcoin is.”

Five held over Bitcoin scams in China and Germany

“The German authorities say they arrested two people following an investigation into malware that generated the virtual currency by infecting its victims’ PCs.  Xinhua reports three people have been detained in China after a trading platform was shut without warning, cutting off investors from their funds.  The cases do not appear to be related.  The German Federal Criminal Police Office say one of its suspects was arrested in the southern state of Bavaria and the other in the northern region of Lower Saxony.  It accuses them of being behind a botnet that allowed its operators to secretly use other people’s computers to carry out ‘Bitcoin mining’.”

Trezor to Ship Physical Bitcoin Wallets in January

“Hardware wallet manufacturer Trezor has confirmed it will deliver its first batch of wallets next month, following a successful crowdfunding campaign that began in June.  Trezor had previously promised to deliver its first orders in October, but delayed the fulfillment date to January after deciding to add more features.  Trezor is the latest nascent hardware wallet designed for the bitcoin community. However, as it stands, hardware wallets are not in common use.  One benefit of a hardware wallet is the fact that it isn’t connected to the internet, thus greatly reducing its exposure to potential malefactors.”
