Microsoft remotely deleted Tor-based botnet from 2 Million Systems

“In October 2013, Microsoft adopted a silent, offensive method to tackle infection due to a Tor-based botnet malware called ‘Sefnit‘. In an effort to takedown of the Sefnit botnet to protect windows users, Microsoft remotely removes the older versions of installed Tor Browser software and infection from 2 Million systems, even without the knowledge of the system’s owner.  It was not practically possible for Microsoft or the Government to instruct each individual on ‘How to remove this Malware‘, so finally Microsoft took the decision of remotely washing out the infections themselves.  Microsoft’s action clarifies the capability to remotely remove any software from your computer.”

Scottish company Maidsafe claims to have built a Bitcloud-like system

“Last week’s announcement of Bitcloud, a theoretical peer-to-peer network project that bypasses centralised servers and uses individual devices as secure nodes for routing and distributing network traffic captured significant media attention.  A Scottish company, MaidSafe, claims that it has nearly finished building a system that does what Bitcloud is proposing. You can imagine our scepticism when a company we’ve never heard of, in the tiny town of Troon, told me it had solved one of the most compelling problems on the internet.  Here’s what I have translated from the team of exuberant programmers who have been deep in code, deep in Scotland, for the past eight years.”

Teenage Hacker Transforms Web Into One Giant Bitcoin Network

“The bitcoin digital currency is driven by open source software that runs across thousands of machines around the globe. Borrowing code from this rather clever piece of software, independent hackers have already built applications such as the Twitter-style social network Twister, the encrypted e-mail alternative Bitmessage, and the unseizable domain name system Namecoin. But Buterin believes that many other applications can benefit from the genius of the bitcoin software.  He envisions Ethereum as an online service that lets you build practically anything in the image of bitcoin and run it across a worldwide network of machines.”

Bitcoin is not just digital currency. It’s Napster for finance.

“Developers and entrepreneurs are already hard at work building features on top of the Bitcoin protocol that will allow for the decentralized execution of financial services, from currency hedging to loans to stock issuance to rental and purchase contracts. These new services rely on the same innovative proof-of-work model of distributed security and record-keeping that has kept the bitcoin currency secure as its value ballooned well past $10 billion. In the long term, peer-to-peer finance threatens to weaken banks and other financial agents just as peer-to-peer file sharing did the music industry — and some of the architects of this financial Napster seem gleeful about the possibility.”

Chris Odom on OpenTransactions

“Chris Odom, better known as Fellow Traveler, is the creator of the Open Transactions system. The utility of a system like Open Transactions recently clicked for me, which is a little funny because I’ve known about it for two years and actually interviewed Chris in 2013 on the topic. Once the lightbulb switched on I saw a little of what our future might look like with interoperable cryptocurrencies minus the centralized exchanges.”

Microsoft allows Bitcoin trading app on Windows Phone 8

Microsoft has approved an update to Kraken app for Windows Phone 8 that adds Bitcoin trading capabilities to the app making it the first ever app on the platform to have such a feature, as claimed by its developer.  The developer of the app Leon Cullens says that this is a major news because ‘Nobody really knew what Microsoft’s stance on bitcoin trading apps was before today, but by approving my app they have shown that they’re not boycotting Bitcoin.’  ‘That’s a huge endorsement in my opinion’, adds Cullens.”

Coinpunk Crowdfunding Bitcoin Wallet That Apple Can’t Ban

“Open-source bitcoin project Coinpunk has launched an Indiegogo campaign in an effort to raise funding for a new wallet solution that could be used on iOS devices without a jailbreak.  Apple has a history of restricting bitcoin-related apps in the app store (which contains over 1 million apps). Thus, Coinpunk is not designing an app, but a web application.  The web application allows users to create self-hosted bitcoin wallets and access them through the browser, rendering Apple’s walled garden approach pointless. The idea of self-hosted wallets is interesting, as many users are still suspicious of online wallets, so they tend to believe their bitcoins are safer in their own hands.”

Bitcoin Baron Keeps a Secretive Open Source OS Alive

“One of the world’s longest-running open source software projects will live on, thanks to a Romanian bitcoin baron.  Recently, Theo de Raadt and the other engineers who oversee the OpenBSD operating system were hit with a $20,000 bill for the electricity that feeds the computers on which they test this venerable piece of software. fter they revealed that the bill could bring the project down, Mircea Popescu, the Romanian who runs the online bitcoin exchange MPEx, stepped in to save them.  It’s another example of how the bitcoin community is working to boost the fortunes of the wider world of open source software.”

Bitcoin Compensation for Open-Source Software Development

“Open-source software is often developed by many programmers who volunteer their skills. Some developers have found ways of getting compensation for their work via crowdfunding on Kickstarter or on BountySource.com, a platform specifically for funding open-source software development.  Mr. Johnston believes that Bitcoin may be another and, possibly, better way of sponsoring open-source development. ‘It’s a new way to monetize open-source,’ he said.  Mr. Johnston said he expects his group to back 20 more open-source software projects this year that rely on Bitcoin.  This wave of projects may end up competing with incorporated companies, many backed by venture capitalists.”
