Love Child of Bitcoin and GitHub Pays Cash for Code

“Many open source software projects run on donations. After all, open source is about giving code away for free, and without any revenue, you need some way of covering costs and motivating coders.  BitHub solves that problem by accepting bitcoin donations and collecting them into a common pool. It then monitors a project on the code hosting and collaboration site GitHub, and anytime someone submits code to the project — a process known as a ‘pull request’ — BitHub awards that person a portion of the pool. Open Whispersystems is already using the tool, and the first payment — about $19.12 worth of bitcoins — went out yesterday.”

BitTorrent Client Devs Work on Bitcoin Integration

“The people behind FrostWire are working hard to implement Bitcoin support in their BitTorrent client. In addition to letting users donate to content creators and tracker owners from within the client, they are also integrating a Bitcoin wallet into the BitTorrent client. The FrostWire team hopes other clients will pick up the idea and have pitched a new standard to extend the BitTorrent protocol with Bitcoin meta-data.”

Bitcoin market price app, ‘Bitcoin Alarm,’ is carefully cloaked malware

“The desktop Windows application sends price alerts by SMS to a mobile phone. But closer examination of its code turned up several suspicious traits that indicate it may try to steal the virtual currency, wrote Kenny MacDermid, a research analyst with security company Arbor Networks.  Tucked inside Bitcoin Alarm is a script that checks whether security software from Avast is running. If so, it stays quiet for 20 seconds.  An encrypted file inside Bitcoin Alarm turned out to be a remote-access Trojan called NetWiredRC, which can be used to steal login credentials and, in this case, bitcoins, he wrote.”

SpareCoins: The Bitcoin Wallet In Your Browser

“Using a Desktop Wallet sucks if you’re sending a small amount of Bitcoins. Opening one in another window feels clunky, and syncing with the Blockchain can take a day. SpareCoins is a Chrome Extension that can be opened with one click, or CTRL+SHIFT+K. This makes sending Bitcoins around the web much easier.  Every week, another online Bitcoin Wallet will get hacked. SpareCoins, however, does not have a central point for attackers to target. Your private keys are encrypted and stored inside your browser, rather than an unsecure remote server. They can be backed up at anytime, and clearing your cache won’t delete your keys.”

How the Bitcoin protocol actually works

“Many thousands of articles have been written purporting to explain Bitcoin, the online, peer-to-peer currency. Most of those articles give a hand-wavy account of the underlying cryptographic protocol, omitting many details. Even those articles which delve deeper often gloss over crucial points. My aim in this post is to explain the major ideas behind the Bitcoin protocol in a clear, easily comprehensible way. We’ll start from first principles, build up to a broad theoretical understanding of how the protocol works, and then dig down into the nitty-gritty, examining the raw data in a Bitcoin transaction.”

Kryptokit Launches as Dark Wallet’s Biggest Rival

“As a Chrome extension, the Kryptokit wallet is an open-source project. Users can create their bitcoin addresses by moving their mouse around the screen. This, along with a random number generator, creates each user’s address.  The system also has another tab, for secure messaging. This uses GPG (the open-source version of the Pretty Good Privacy protocol developed by Phil Zimmerman) to secure messages between its users.  The GPG key can be used to encrypt messages that are sent to other Kryptokit users. There are some key differences between Kryptokit and Dark Wallet. One feature that the Dark Wallet team is reportedly discussing is a trust-less mixing service.”

CyanogenMod Android firmware gains built-in SMS encryption

“Users of the CyanogenMod alternative Android firmware gained additional security on Monday, thanks to the integration of Open WhisperSystems’ TextSecure protocol.  Open WhisperSystems develops security software that can encrypt voice-over-IP (VoIP) telephone calls and SMS/MMS messages.  Android device owners can install the company’s TextSecure SMS security software by downloading it from the Google Play store. But the company announced on Monday that the CyanogenMod project is also shipping the technology baked into its firmwares by default, beginning with current nightly builds of version 10.2.”

Bitcoin Boom Spreads to IPhones With Mobile-Payment Apps

“Gliph Inc., which has more than 25,000 users, has raised more than $350,000 from venture capitalists including Tim Draper, who has backed such companies as Skype and Tesla Motors Inc. It’s one of hundreds of Bitcoin-related programs available from Google Inc. (GOOG) and Apple Inc. (AAPL) app stores.  The mini-boom in Bitcoin software for smartphones is making it easier for consumers to use the virtual currency in place of cash for quick transactions, such as paying for food or splitting a bill. Bitcoin’s shift to mobile is happening even though Apple has rejected many Bitcoin payment apps, developers said. Rejected developers are instead flocking to Android-based devices.”

Google removes CyanogenMod Installer from Play Store

“The reasoning given by Google is that the CyanogenMod Installer violates the Google Play Store’s developer terms by actively encouraging Android users to ‘void [the] warranty’ on their devices. As we saw when we took the app for a test drive, the Installer does indeed de-hair the hairy process of unlocking an Android device’s bootloader and getting an alternate ROM installed; apparently, though, the Installer made things just a little too easy.  The CyanogenMod Installer application didn’t even last a full month on the Play Store, but the CyanogenMod team still says that it has seen ‘hundreds of thousands of installations of the application.'”

Toolbar enslaves PCs for Bitcoin mining

“Web browser toolbars generally are a pain. Many of them promise the earth, but in reality all they do is redirect searches, mine users’ data and slow down computers. One, however, has been discovered taking its users’ computer resources to mine Bitcoins for its developers.  According to security company Malwarebytes, the Myfreeproxy toolbar is designed to let users easily toggle a proxy server, allowing them to anonymise web browsing or watch foreign internet streaming broadcasts such as Hulu or Netflix US.  However, buried in plain sight in the end user licence agreement (EULA) is a clause giving the program permission to install a Bitcoin miner on the user’s machine.”
