Northern California counties revive an old idea for a breakaway state

“Late this month another voice joined the mix: Citing the State of Jefferson movement as inspiration, Silicon Valley venture capitalist Tim Draper launched a state ballot initiative to carve up California — into six states.  Political analysts say congressional Democrats would never go for it. But an elated Baird is working to arrange a meeting with Draper.  But Mark Baird and others are convinced that a ‘more favorable regulatory environment’ could help them boost a region with some of California’s highest poverty and unemployment rates.  They expect they might be ignored in Sacramento. In that event, they plan to take their fight to federal court to try to poke holes in Reynolds vs. Sims.”

Overstock CEO: money ’too important to leave to government officials’

“Overstock.com Inc., an online discount retailer, is preparing to accept the virtual currency bitcoin as payment in the second half of 2014, according to Chief Executive and Chairman Patrick Byrne.  The news was first reported by the website newsBTC, and confirmed in a Thursday morning phone interview with Byrne.  The project is in an early stage, with no decision yet on whether Overstock.com would work with bitcoin companies to allow bitcoin payments or create its own system. A team of six to 12 people is expected to work on bitcoin payments at the company, said Byrne.”

Scotland citizenship, passport plans outlined

“Anyone who has lived in Scotland for 10 years at some stage of their life will be allowed to apply to become a Scottish citizen after independence, according to the white paper.  It will also be available to anyone with a Scottish grandparent or parent, through a system of citizenship by descent.  Those who will automatically be considered Scottish citizens are British citizens ‘habitually resident’ in Scotland – including those who have a dual citizenship with another country.  Scottish-born citizens currently living outside the country will also be considered citizens.  A Scottish passport will be available to anyone who acquires Scottish citizenship.”

In an upcoming update, I will publish the laws and add some commentary – but creating a zone is going to be far easier than almost anyone imagined. Barriers to entry will be low so that competition is high. We are not out of the woods yet. Things could still go wrong, either due to internal politics in Honduras or due to outside pressure.
