Swiss pot group spotlights loophole in cannabis decriminalization law

“Authorities in Switzerland decriminalized possession of small amounts of cannabis earlier this month but a pot smokers group is already dispensing advice on how to avoid the penalty.  In a German-language brochure it advises users to lie to police to avoid paying the fine.  A person checked by police and found in possession of less than ten grams of cannabis ‘should not answer questions or lie’ about earlier consumption, the group says.  If a person admits to smoking ‘even a single joint’ police are then required to issue the 100-franc fine.  Someone who denies having smoked cannot be fined ‘and the piece of hash or little bag of weed’ they may be carrying cannot be confiscated.”

Peter Thiel’s Seasteading Dream Floats On

“On Friday, the Seasteading Institute—a non-profit group cofounded by Peter Thiel and Patri Friedman (grandson to Ronald Reagan advisor Milton Friedman)—successfully closed itsIndiegogo campaign to design ‘the world’s first floating city’ for ‘pioneers who wish to demonstrate new ways of living together.’  The campaign exceeded its $20,000 goal, raising $27,082 in tax deductible funds from 291 donors: a sum that will be matched, dollar-for-dollar, by the Thiel Foundation, the philanthropic organization best known for keeping kids out of school.  [..] CEO Larry Page described a similar hope to ‘set apart a piece of the world‘ as a safe space for technologists.”

Marc Andreessen: “The world is going to see an explosion of countries”

“Netscape founder and venture capitalist Marc Andreessen thinks the world is going to see an explosion of new countries in the years ahead.  ‘I think there is going to be double, triple, quadruple countries in the coming years,’ Andreessen said.  The cofounder of venture firm Andreessen Horowitz noted that the borders of today’s countries are in some cases arbitrary, pointing to Iraq, Syria, and much of Africa as artificial constructs.  He envisions a world in which neighboring countries choose to ally with each other and collaborate, rather than foment conflict. And, he thinks, software will play an important role in that cross-border cooperation.”

Fifty Ways to Leave Leviathan

“Compared with politics or the slow road of mass education, the work of hacking Leviathan through innovation is a promising road forward. Something’s happening. It’s like the Singularity for civil disobedience. Pandora’s box. Perhaps a series of innovation tidal waves. A whole lot of people are participating in a great unfolding. And if you’re drawing up grand social engineering plans, throw them out. The world is about to get a lot more dynamic.  Here are just 50 ways people are working around State obstacles.”

Peer-to-Peer Economy Thrives as Activists Vacate the System

“Progressives may call it the ‘sharing economy’ while Libertarians may refer to it as Agorism –  a ‘society in which all relations between people are voluntary exchanges by means of counter-economics, thus engaging in a manner with aspects of peaceful revolution.’  Together, they’re opting out of the current socioeconomic matrix and creating a new alternative economy where trading occurs peer-to-peer and increasingly without government-issued currency.  It’s a space where mutual trade occurs without burdensome taxes, regulations, or licenses, an underground black market enabled by the Internet and regulated by social feedback mechanisms — and it’s growing exponentially.”

Two, Three, Many Snowdens!

nodrop6

“Under-35s who think Snowden did a good thing are not people who believe ‘the rules’ governing institutions are made for the benefit of ‘all of us,’ or that information is secret for a good reason. These are people who believe those in charge will screw them over without thinking twice, and that secrecy exists mainly to hide the dirty stuff those in authority are up to. But the entire system depends on this generation for its grunt work.
So we can expect a lot more leaks on the Manning and Snowden scale in years to come, and a lot more doxings on the scale of HB Gary and Stratfor. The system is creating its own gravediggers.”

NSA Subversion of the Constitution Warrants Impeachment Investigation

“Public lies were — and are — patronizingly peddled from the White House down. Do they take us for fools? The president often appears to be a captive audience for the Director of National Intelligence and his latest briefing in a sealed-off area of public policy. No one has been sacked for runaway surveillance programs. Each branch of the government covers the backside of the other. In another historical context, impeachment would definitely have been on the table. In the world at large, people have been debating whether Snowden is a traitor or a patriot. But to whom do intelligence civil servants and contractors owe their loyalty? To the state or to the Constitution?”

Neighborhood secession creeps into Scarborough property tax dispute

“More than a month after appeals began on 44 property tax assessments from 2012 at Higgins Beach and Pine Point, continued arguments consumed five hours Monday night.
While hearings continue, appellant Don Petrin of River Sands Drive has hinted the appeal effort will spread beyond Town Hall and the courts, to a secession movement in the waterfront neighborhoods hardest hit by the revaluations.  ‘I’m not leading that effort, however I will, like many, support that effort,’ Petrin said. ‘Legal advice was solicited and received as to the steps involved, however I have not seen the required petition as yet.'”

Separatists chant ‘Death to Belgium’ at country’s new royal couple

“Though several hundred people lined up to greet Philippe, who ascended to the throne in July after his father’s abdication, an equally big crowd of republican separatists massed nearby shouting ‘Death to Belgium’ and waving the Flemish flag.  Antwerp, Europe’s second biggest port located in the northern region of Flanders, is home to the powerful Flemish separatist N-VA party whose leader Bart De Wever won election as city mayor last year.  Philippe and Mathilde are currently visiting Belgium under a medieval tradition that calls for new sovereigns to make ‘a joyous entry’ into the country’s major towns, and Friday’s protest was the first of its kind so far.”
