Hacking Law and Governance with Startup Cities

“Startup Cities compete to provide new and better functions—in this case, to provide citizens with services they want and need. One new zone hosting a Startup City might pioneer different environmental law or tax policy. Another may offer a custom-tailored regulatory environment for finance or universities. Still another may try a new model for funding social services.  Startup Cities are a powerful alternative to risky, difficult, and politically improbable national reform. If bad social techs lead a zone to fail, we don’t gamble the entire nation’s livelihood. People can easily exit a Startup City—effectively putting the project ‘out of business.'”

Colorado Democrats fail to stave off recall efforts after supporting gun control

“Giron and Morse are being targeted for recalls because they both supported gun control measures. Gun-rights activists say Democrats went too far curbing gun rights with two of the measures — one to restrict ammunition magazines and another to expand required background checks. Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper would ultimately set the recall election dates, but not before legal challenges are exhausted. If Morse and Giron face recall elections, they’d be the first state lawmakers to go to a recall vote since Colorado adopted the recall in 1912. Grueskin, the lawyer making both recall challenges, has said he’d appeal decisions to the Denver District Court.”

Thousands of protesters call for Yemen to be broken up

“Thousands of people rallied in south Yemen on Sunday’s 19th anniversary of the civil war that was won by the north to demand secession for the south.  ‘No union and no federation — no to the occupation!’ the crowds chanted in the Hadramawt provincial capital of Mukalla.  They waved the flag of the former South Yemen and portraits of Hassan Baoum, head of the Southern Movement’s supreme council.  In a statement, the protest organisers reaffirmed their rejection of a UN-backed national dialogue under way in the capital Sanaa, which aims to draft a new constitution and prepare for elections in 2014, after a two-year transition led by President Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi.”

The Whistleblower’s Guide to the Orwellian Galaxy: How to Leak to the Press

“It is, as one commenter noted, ‘a dangerous time to be right when the government is wrong.’ We now live in a world where public servants informing the public about government behavior or wrongdoing must practice the tradecraft of spies and drug dealers à la The Wire. Even the head of the CIA can’t email his mistress without being identified by the FBI. And privately collected data isn’t immune, either; highly sensitive metadata is particularly vulnerable thanks to the Third Party Doctrine. So how can one safely leak information to the press, let alone coordinate a Deep Throat-style meetup?  Here’s a guide.”

Snowden leaks now threaten U.S.-EU cooperation on travel, financial data

“The European Union is threatening to suspend two agreements granting the United States access to European financial and travel data unless Washington shows it is respecting EU rules on data privacy.  Struck in the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks and regarded by Washington as important tools in the fight against terrorism, the Terrorist Finance Tracking Program (TFTP) provides the U.S. Treasury with data stored in Europe on international financial transfers, and the Passenger Name Record agreement covers data provided by passengers when booking tickets and checking in for flights. All such information is passed to Homeland Security.”

More modern monarchs choose not to rule until death

“Belgian King Albert, 79, became the latest to announce he will abdicate his throne, a little over a week after the emir of Qatar Hamad ben Khalifa Al Thani stepped down in favour of his son — a first for an Arab country. The abdication of queen Beatrix of the Netherlands in April was not a complete surprise, as both her mother and grandmother before her voluntarily gave up their crowns. However a decision by Pope Benedict XVI to step down that same month stunned the world. He was the first to resign the papacy — an elected monarchy — in some 600 years.”

Dissolve the Federal Government

thelrcblog-5002

“I cannot be comprehensive, but I can mention a few reasons why you’ll be better off without the Federal Government (which is the U.S.A.). You won’t pay any federal taxes. This includes the Social Security tax, the income tax, any tariffs, any excise taxes, any Medicare taxes, telephone taxes, gift taxes, inheritance taxes, capital gains taxes, dividend taxes, and others. You won’t have to use fiat money. You won’t have to support a bloated military/industrial complex, an agricultural complex, an education complex, a Wall Street complex, a banking complex, a scientific complex, or any federal crony capitalist complex. Your won’t have to worry so much about foreign wars.”

Paul Rosenberg: Top 5 Reasons I Stopped Caring About Politics

“When I was young, I felt a need to understand politics, and I spent time studying. But as time progressed, I received diminishing returns on that investment. And in the past few years, I have given it up altogether. These days, my concern with politics is limited to things like these: Who is making war, and where? Where is the crime occurring in my area?  Are there laws that will force me to move my businesses offshore?  Beyond that, I’m really not interested. I see the headlines, but I seldom read the stories. And I’m very happy saying, ‘I haven’t looked into it,’ when people ask my opinion on the day’s ‘news.’ Here’s why.”

The Next American Revolution

CHS9a1

“The next American Revolution will not be an event, it will be a process.  Springtime for the Savior State/cartel-capitalism partnership will be brief, and by 2018-19 all the systemic flaws and disruptive trends will reassert themselves with renewed vigor. The entire current model of governance, social order and the economy will be revolutionized not by overthrow but by the process of irrelevance.  The new system will be better, more humane, more flexible, more transparent, with more opportunity, for it will be everything the current corrupt, sclerotic, parasitic and exploitive system is not.”
