The Revolution of Brazil – An Interview

“This picture was taken in Brasilia, the capital of Brazil during last week’s protests. The protests took place in front of the National Congress building where there is a small lake, the ministry buildings can be seen at the back. At some point protesters tried to invade the building across the lake and were repelled by the police with tear gas and batons. They are known to have been using rubber bullets as well. Later in the evening the protesters broke through and ended up on top of the building. It was a huge symbol to Brazil when they broke through. A few of them were quoted as saying something in the lines of ‘we are taking our home back’.”

France’s triumphant ‘Joan of Arc’ vows to bring back franc and destroy euro

“‘We cannot be seduced,’ she said, brimming with confidence after her party secured 46pc of the vote a week ago. Her candidate trounced the ruling Socialists in their own bastion of Villeneuve-sur-Lot. ‘The euro ceases to exist the moment that France leaves, and that is our incredible strength. What are they going to do, send in tanks?’  ‘Europe is just a great bluff. One side there is the immense power of sovereign peoples, and on the other side are a few technocrats,’ she said.  It is her defence of the French welfare model and her critique of capitalism that gives her a Leftist hue — some call it 1930s national socialism — so far in outlook from Britain’s UKIP.”

Colorado secede? Counties weigh exit plan to form state of ‘North Colorado’

“It’s an uphill climb that looks Rocky Mountain high, but a collection of independent-thinking counties may mount an effort to secede from the rest of Colorado and form their own new state.  The idea is rooted in the political rift that many Coloradans – especially rural ones – feel with a Denver-based state legislature that has taken a liberal turn in recent years.  A new state, if it formed, might be called North Colorado.  Similar ideas have sprung up in other US states. But again, since 1863, secession to form a new state hasn’t actually happened.”

Egypt: What a Shame

“When was the last time you saw a Jiffy Lube tear gas everyone who refused to stop in? Have you ever seen a Chiropractor driving down the street shooting water cannons at people who refused his services?  Every single person could make a decision that ‘I’ll never go to Jiffy Lube as long as I live,’ and Jiffy Lube could do nothing about it. Should that decision be made by everyone, it would have no choice but to close its doors.  No pickets….No chants….No fairy tales like ‘making your voice heard’ or ‘the will of the people’. No injuries, arrests or tanks trampling over bodies. Just a simple decision not to interact…not to exchange…not to associate.”

Colorado Gun Owners Display Blatant Defiance Of New Law

“Stores across Colorado are pulling high-capacity magazines off their shelves. A new law that took effect Monday limits magazines to 15 rounds and some people are already deliberately breaking the law. The law requires background checks on all gun sales, including private ones. ‘We want to, today, to test how this law functions; demonstrate that it is not enforceable,’ a demonstrator told the crowd.  The new laws prompted about two dozen opponents of increased gun control to gather at the state Capitol on Monday at midday in protest. Many swapped and sold high-capacity magazines in plain view of police officers, daring them to make an arrest.”

Intersecting Currents of Change

C4SSLogo22

“Our era is characterized by two considerably overlapping contradictions or fracture points. First, we’re in the early stages of historic transition from a social organization dominated by large, centralized, hierarchical institutions like corporations and nation-states, to a world of small, self-governing units connected together horizontally through networks.  Things get interesting when the first contradiction (between the old hierarchies and the self-organized networks which are supplanting them) is reinforced by the contradiction between the World Hegemon and dissident states or rival coalitions of states.”

Pro-democracy protest in Hong Kong draws tens of thousands

“Younger activists have become increasingly politicized. Surveys show they identify themselves more as Hong Kong citizens than Chinese nationals – a trend that alarms Beijing, which is eager for the city to show more ‘patriotism’ to the motherland.  Despite China’s pledge to allow a direct poll for the city’s leader in 2017, recent signs from senior Chinese officials have raised concern Beijing may somehow try to rig the rules to screen out opposition candidates from taking part.  The former British colony returned to Chinese rule on July 1, 1997, with the promise of universal suffrage as an ‘ultimate aim’ in its mini-constitution.”

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange: NSA leaker is a hero

“Citing his own grand jury trial in Alexandria, Virginia, Assange explained that Snowden does not feel as if he could receive a fair trial due to what is known as the ‘rocket docket’ — jury pools in the area are filled with CIA and Pentagon employees and have high conviction rates in cases brought to trial.  Snowden should seek refuge then, Assange argued, until he feels he would be ‘afforded justice’ upon his return to the United States.  The NSA leaker remains in Russia while he tries to find asylum in another country. That has been complicated by the U.S. revocation of his passport, an act Assange described as ‘disgraceful.'”

“Restore the Fourth is a grassroots, non-partisan, non-violent movement that seeks to organize and assemble nationwide protests on July 4th, 2013. Protesters in over 100 cities across America will gather to demand that the government of the United States of America adhere to its constitutionally dictated limits and respect the Fourth Amendment. http://www.RestoretheFourth.net provides a detailed list of protest locations. Restore the Fourth maintains that justification of the Fourth Amendment beyond the original text need not be given; the legitimacy of which is self-evident.”

Anti-government protests continue in Istanbul: ‘Government, resign!’

“Thousands gathered in Istanbul’s Taksim Square on Saturday to protest against the harsh police treatment of demonstrators whose anti-government rallies have rocked the country for nearly a month.  Riot police blocked off the centre of the square, the symbolic heart of the nationwide protest movement, for some two hours as the demonstrators chanted ‘Government, resign!’ but there was no fresh violence.  The crowd also denounced the death of a demonstrator in the country’s Kurdish-dominated southeast on Friday after soldiers opened fire to disperse villagers protesting against the expansion of an army outpost.”
