80% Catalans say Yes to independence in symbolic ‘referendum’

“The Minister of Justice, Rafael Catala, on behalf of the Spanish government, defined the vote as ‘political propaganda organized by pro-independence forces.’  After Spain’s High Court ruled the independence referendum proposed by Catalan leader Artur Mas unconstitutional last month, the Madrid government has also issued a ban on the informal poll, forbidding Catalans from making any public show of support for independence.  Earlier, the Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, stated the vote ‘will not have any effect.’  But that did not stop some 41,000 volunteers from organizing the election with over 1,300 polling centers set up for the historic vote.”

Spain Moves Military Assets Into Catalonia Before ‘Illegal’ Secession Vote

“‘Everything is all set for Nov. 9,’ says a senior Catalan regional government official as the region prepares to defy both the central government and the country’s highest court and proceed with a much-disputed weekend vote on whether to secede from Spain. And while the Spanish government has not specified what legal consequences Catalan leaders, poll workers or voters might face Sunday, when they go to vote, The LA Times reports that Madrid has reportedly readied thousands of Civil Guard police officers to travel to Catalonia this weekend if needed.”

Angry with Washington, 1 in 4 Americans open to secession

“Republicans were more inclined to support the idea, with 29.7 percent favoring it compared with 21 percent of Democrats.  By region, the idea was least popular in New England, the cradle of the Revolutionary War, with just 17.4 percent of respondents open to pulling their state out.  It was most popular in the Southwest, where 34.1 percent of respondents back the idea.  That region includes Texas, where an activist group is calling the state’s legislature to put the secession question on a statewide ballot. Anger with President Barack Obama’s handling of issues ranging from healthcare reform to the rise of Islamic State militants drives some of the feeling.”

Scotland votes to remain part of United Kingdom

“North Sea oil revenues, Britain’s nuclear weapons program and the use of the pound sterling would have all been on the line, along with dozens of other questions as the two sides divided this island along a border that has hardly functioned like one since 1707.  Scotland already has its own parliament, with responsibility for managing the nation’s health care, education and legal systems.  Nationalists said an independent Scotland, unshackled from London’s austerity-minded Conservative-led government, would have been modeled on Scandinavian countries that spread their wealth broadly and offer their citizens a generous package of government support.”

Scottish independence: big government and the five magic words

“The Scottish independence referendum has just concluded, and the first glance shows that the ‘No’ vote – that committed to remaining part of the United Kingdom – will pass by a few percentage points.  Ever since the Scottish Parliament decided to hold such an independence referendum five years ago, most of the world thought they were barking mad.  Few gave the movement much credibility until recent polls came out suggesting Scottish secession just might be a plausible reality.  In fact, results now show that a majority of those voting in the city of Glasgow indeed did vote for secession from London, a slap in the face to the centuries-old union between the two home countries.”

Ukraine ratifies E.U. pact but backs expanded autonomy in rebel areas

“Ukraine’s parliament ratified an agreement Tuesday to deepen economic and political ties with the European Union, moving ahead with a plan that sparked an uprising by pro-Russian rebels and led to Moscow’s annexation of the Crimea peninsula.  But in a move seeking to ease tensions, Ukrainian lawmakers also passed legislation to grant greater autonomy to eastern Ukraine. It’s part of a wider peace deal seeking to end a conflict that has claimed more than 2,600 lives and sharply escalated tensions between Russia and the West.  The E.U. must now take steps to formalize the association with Ukraine, which would deepen economic and political ties with the 27-nation bloc.”

U.K. promises Scots more power if they vote ‘no’ on independence

“The British government is scrambling to respond to a lurch in the opinion polls towards a vote for Scottish independence this month by promising a range of new powers for Scotland if it chooses to stay within the United Kingdom.  British finance minister George Osborne said on Sunday that plans would be set out in the coming days to give Scotland more autonomy on tax, spending and welfare if Scots vote against independence in a historic referendum on Sept. 18.  Osborne’s comments came after a YouGov poll for the Sunday Times showed supporters of independence had taken their first opinion poll lead since the referendum campaign began.”

“If you’re like me, you learned in school that the slaves of the old American South were freed by Abraham Lincoln, or at least by the central government of the United States.  But as I dug through the facts about slavery in the South, I found the same pattern that I’ve seen over and over when I examined historical turns for the better: that the true benefactors were opposed and punished.  The people who did the actual work to end slavery were regarded as criminals by every level of the United States government, from Congress and the Supreme Court, down to the local sheriff. The laws of the United States enforced slavery, and powerfully so.”
