Underestimate the Internet at Your Peril

“A decade ago we predicted that the mainstream media was a failed ‘sunk cost’ that kept people like Rupert Murdoch up at night. But the metamorphosis is even bigger than that. What we have also predicted is that the same sort of radical undermining is now beginning to infect the rest of the West’s gigantism. Big Finance, Big Politics, even Big Justice are all going to come under significant challenge in the next few years. In fact, it is already happening. Western governments – especially the US – are arming themselves against this occurrence, but bullets are useless against ideas … and the ideas that we are reporting on are fairly unstoppable until they run their course.”

Europe Sinks … As Predicted

“The headlines exploded last night with EU election results showing clearly that voters in France, England, Germany, Denmark, Hungary and Greece (among others) had had enough of the EU.What happens when a vast network of seamless information begins to inform people of the Matrix-like reality of their lives? What happens when people have access to unadulterated news and information over a relatively long period of time? Inevitably, it has an effect. As we predicted, the tribes of Europe are getting restless. These tribes were happy to take the cash when the EU was handing it out. But now, stuck with austerity and open borders, they are a good deal less content.”

Ukip wins European elections with ease to set off political earthquake

“The Eurosceptic party’s victory marked the first time in modern history that neither Labour nor the Conservatives have won a British national election. The Liberal Democrats suffered a near-total wipeout losing all but one of its 11 MEPs.  The influential Conservative MEP Daniel Hannan called for a pre-election pact with Ukip and demanding the Foreign Office toughen its renegotiation stance on Europe.  The main parties moved on Sunday to show they regarded the Ukip threat as serious. Iain Duncan Smith, the work and pensions secretary, announced that he aims to halve the amount of time – from six to three months – that EU migrants can claim benefits.”

The Future of Countries

“We tend to forget that, although the world map has looked more or less the same since the end of World War II, it has been the norm, throughout history, for large parcels of property to change hands fairly often. Boundaries move. Countries become larger, smaller, or disappear altogether. Large empires are created, swallowing up smaller countries, sometimes lasting for 200 years or more, then inexorably breaking up into smaller remnants.  Certainly we are heading into a period of dramatic change—economic change, social change, and certainly political change. Whenever such a period occurs in history, changes in the lines on the map inevitably also occur.”

Will Facebook Bring Down the Government?

portallogo3

“This sharp decline in trust has not been triggered by a particular event. In other words, the federal government cannot reverse this decline by changing its position on any particular piece of objectionable legislation or enforcement. The government now has to hope that this decline in trust will be reversed by nothing in particular. If it cannot be reversed, then the government’s ability to use coercion to gain specific public responses is going to decline. Too many people will not cooperate.  We do not see any major change in policy in Congress. We do not see any particular branch of government encountering anything resembling organized resistance. But trust is rapidly disappearing.”

The Real Reason to Welcome Secession

“Borders change over time. And humans, when given the opportunity, tend to choose to live independently in smaller and more internally cohesive groups. That’s a big reason why there are more than 200 countries in existence today, versus around 70 in 1945.  And the process continues.  What makes the residents of places like Catalonia, Scotland, and Texas so anxious to separate themselves from their respective national governments? Humans have a fundamental drive to seek personal autonomy, and that drive carries over into our social and political lives. And, of course, smaller governments are more accountable than larger ones.”

Rancher, armed militias win standoff with Feds; govt returns cattle

“The tense stand-off between hundreds of protesters and police has ended in the Nevada desert, forcing the authorities to cancel the round-up of 300 animals and to return the cattle to their owner.  The standoff between rancher Cliven Bundy and the US Bureau of Land Management has lasted over a week, after hundreds of armed agents with the United States Bureau of Land Management and the FBI turned up in the Clark County to execute the court-ordered confiscation of nearly 1,000 cattle. The US government says the animals have trespassed on federal property.  This provoked a fierce backlash from anti-government groups, right-wing politicians and gun-rights activists.”

Italian police seize makeshift tank built by Venice separatists

“The underground group, made up of radical separatists from the Lombardy, Sardinia and Veneto regions, had been planning to ‘liberate’ the iconic Venetian piazza using weapons from the Albanian mafia and set up a new independent government, police said.  They were planning an attack ‘by hundreds of people, some of them armed’ and ‘an insurrection from the inhabitants of northern Italy most affected by the economic crisis,’ law enforcers said in a statement.  The plan comes after more than two million residents of Venice and its surrounding region last month voted overwhelmingly in favour of breaking away from the rest of the country and forming their own state.”

Stop cheering – Quebec’s sovereignty movement is far from finished

“The tepid 28 per cent of Quebeckers who identified primarily with Canada in 1998 has now shrunk to 20 per cent while 48 per cent identify primarily with Quebec, nearly 2-1/2 times as much and an increase from 35 per cent in 1998. And not only is Quebec relatively missing from the federal government at the political level but the core values championed by an avowedly small-c conservative government, issues such as its foreign and cultural policies and its greater emphasis on military history and symbols has unsurprisingly found less traction in a Quebec where those symbols and values are not resonant.”

Functioning guillotine to be auctioned in France

“A 19th century guillotine in perfect working order is expected to fetch up to €60,000 when it goes up for auction in France on Thursday.  The wood, iron, steel and brass guillotine, synonymous with the 1789 French Revolution, was used to behead people in the second half of the 19th century.  It will be auctioned on Thursday in the northern city of Nantes and auctioneer Francois-Xavier Duflos said it is expected to fetch between €50,000 and €60,000.  ‘It is rare for this type of object to go to auction, so it is rather difficult to set a price, but we have taken into account its rarity,’ he said.  While Mr Duflos said the guillotine was used by the army, he did not elaborate any further.”
