U.S. to provide ‘direct military support’ to Syrian rebels

“President Barack Obama has authorized sending U.S. weapons to Syrian rebels for the first time, a U.S. official said on Thursday after the White House said it has proof the Syrian government had used chemical weapons against opposition forces fighting to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad. The White House said Washington would provide ‘direct military support’ to the opposition but did not specify whether it would include lethal aid. But the U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the package would include weapons. Syrian rebel and political opposition leaders immediately called for anti-aircraft and other sophisticated weaponry.”

The Torture State’s Latest Victory

“The Supreme Court has quietly dismissed a lawsuit filed by a U.S. Navy veteran named Donald Vance who was illegally imprisoned and tortured by the government he served. In 2004, during the U.S. occupation of Iraq, Donald Vance went to that country to work as a security contractor. He soon discovered that the company employing him was deeply corrupt and selling weapons to radical Islamist militias. Vance contacted the FBI and began feeding it information about what he found. This prompted military officials to arrest Vance and confine him in an Iraqi dungeon, where he was tortured.”

Glenn Greenwald slams Rep. Peter King: He supported terrorism for decades

“Guardian columnist Glenn Greenwald on Wednesday night ripped into Rep. Peter King (R-NY) and pointed out the congressman’s support of the Irish Republican Army (IRA).  Greenwald told CNN’s Anderson Cooper that it was ‘staggering’ to see King call for him to face criminal charges for reporting on secret information about the National Security Agency’s surveillance program. ‘It’s bad enough to call for that, it is extraordinarily menacing that he did so based on a complete falsehood, the idea that I ever threatened to [disclose CIA agents],’ he said. Greenwald said he had no idea why King was making the false accusation.”

Anger at US drone war continues in Yemen

“Four drone strikes in total, a few minutes apart, violently tore Salem, Walid and the three visitors to shreds. Amidst the pandemonium, villagers cowering inside the mosque ran out for safety between strikes, believing they would die inside. ‘You cannot imagine what we found,’ said Faisal, drawing a slow, deep breath as he described the nighttime chaos that followed. ‘We found body parts scattered everywhere. We tried to collect them all, and brought them to the mosque to wrap in white cloth.’ The repercussions were devastating. The villagers marched the next day, chanting: ‘Obama, why do you spill our blood?'”

Annals of the Security State: More Airplane Stories

“Over the weekend I related the story of Gabriel Silverstein, a businessman and pilot who for no apparent reason was subjected to a two-hour detention and invasive search by Homeland Security officials as he traveled across the country in his small plane. The picture above is not from that episode; it’s an official DHS photo of its emergency-response agents being trained.  Below and after the jump are two additional stories of the same sort. The first is a long account from Larry Gaines, a small-plane pilot from California who had a similar episode last year. The story is long and detailed, and will be riveting for those in the aviation world.”

Intelligence officials overheard joking about how Glenn Greenwald should be ‘disappeared’

“A group of intelligence officials were overheard yesterday discussing how the National Security Agency worker who leaked sensitive documents to a reporter last week should be ‘disappeared.’  Foreign policy analyst and editor at large of The Atlantic, Steve Clemons, tweeted about the ‘disturbing’ conversation after listening in to four men who were sitting near him as he waited for a flight at Washington’s Dulles airport. According to Clemons, the men had been attending an event hosted by the Intelligence and National Security Alliance.”

CIA didn’t always know who it was killing in drone strikes, classified documents show

“About one of every four of those killed by drones in Pakistan between Sept. 3, 2010, and Oct. 30, 2011, were classified as ‘other militants,’ the documents detail. The ‘other militants’ label was used when the CIA could not determine the affiliation of those killed, prompting questions about how the agency could conclude they were a threat to U.S. national security. The uncertainty appears to arise from the use of so-called ‘signature’ strikes to eliminate suspected terrorists — picking targets based in part on their behavior and associates. A former White House official said the U.S. sometimes executes people based on ‘circumstantial evidence.'”

Despite Ongoing Protest, Obama Resumes Drone Attacks in Pakistan

“Despite repeated and recent warnings that such attacks are destabilizing and an affront to its territorial sovereignty, reports indicate the US military executed a pair of drone missile strikes in Pakistan on Wednesday in what appears to be an attempt to assassinate a high-level Taliban commander. It remains unclear whether or not Wali-ur-Rehman—the reported target of the attack— was, in fact, killed, but reports from various media outlets suggest between four and seven fatalities resulted from the attack that occurred in the North Waziristan tribal region.”

Israeli defense chief indicates if Russia ships advanced missiles to Syria, they could be hit

“Israel’s defense chief said Tuesday a Russian plan to supply sophisticated anti-aircraft missiles to Syria was a ‘threat’ and signaled that Israel is prepared to use force to stop the delivery. The warning by Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon ratcheted up tensions with Moscow over the planned sale of S-300 air-defense missiles to Syria. Earlier in the day, a top Russian official said his government remained committed to the deal.  Israel has been lobbying Moscow to halt the sale, fearing the missiles would upset the balance of power in the region and could slip into the hands of hostile groups, including the Lebanese militia Hezbollah, a close ally of the Syrian regime.”

The EU Joins the Syrian War More Directly

thelrcblog-5002

“U.S. Secretary of State Kerry went to Europe urging that the European Union drop its embargo on shipments of heavy arms into the hands of the Syrian rebels. Are we surprised that the EU has now done exactly that? The article says ‘British Foreign Secretary William Hague says the amended embargo puts pressure on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to seek a non-military solution to more than two years of fighting.’ Remember that a political process occurred in February of 2012 when a new Syrian constitution was passed overwhelmingly. The EU’s decision affirms that the EU intends violently to overthrow Assad in violation of their oaths in the U.N.”
