For Pakistanis It’s A Boston Marathon Bombing Nearly Everyday

“What a terrible and senseless tragedy. I can’t let myself think about it for too long without welling up inside.  While my timing in saying what I’m about to say may seem harsh to some, now is the only time to make this point.  For the people of Pakistan the Boston Marathon bombing happens nearly every day. Sometimes it’s a lesser bomb and fewer people are killed or injured. Sometimes it’s a much larger bomb like one example that left nearly seventy children dead at one time (that’s about three times the loss of children that happened in Sandy Hook).  Can you imagine?”

ACLU Appeals Ruling Allowing Feds to Stay Mum on Drone Targeted Killings

“The American Civil Liberties Union today appealed a judge’s ruling allowing the President Barack Obama administration to keep mum on its legal basis for its drone targeted killing program, including information connected to the killing of Americans via drones.  The appeal concerns an ‘Alice in Wonderland’ decision by U.S. District Court Judge Colleen McMahon of New York, who in January ruled that she was trapped in a ‘paradoxical situation’ of allowing the administration to claim it was legal to kill enemies outside traditional combat zones while keeping the legal rationale secret.”

Is the Boston Bombing the “Moral Equivalent” of Drone Strikes?

thelrcblog-5002

“While Obama demands justice in the Boston bombing, he is silent about his own role in setting off bombs in overseas countries. If the U.S. drones have killed about 4,700 people abroad, then we are talking about something that dwarfs the horror of what happened at Boston. I am not speaking of tit-for-tat. However, I am sure that the horror that people in Muslim countries experience at a drone strike is every bit as awful as what people experienced in Boston yesterday. I do not believe that we are free to denounce the evil at Boston and cheer on the evil our government perpetrates overseas. We must denounce both or risk being the worst hypocrites on the planet.”

Leaked report: Nearly half of US drone strikes in Pakistan not against al-Qaeda

“A trove of leaked classified reports has confirmed what many had suspected – US drone kills in Pakistan are not the precision strikes against top-level al-Qaeda terrorists they are portrayed as by the Obama administration.  Instead, many of the attacks are aimed at suspected low-level tribal militants, who may pose no direct danger to the United States – and for many there appears to be little evidence to justify the assassinations.  The statistics illustrate the breadth of the US ‘drone doctrine’ – which has never been defined by consecutive US administrations.”

Glenn Greenwald: Three Democratic myths used to demean the Paul filibuster

“For the first time since the 9/11 attack, even lowly cable news shows were forced to extensively discuss the government’s extremist theories of power and to debate the need for checks and limits.  All of this put Democrats – who spent eight years flamboyantly pretending to be champions of due process – in a very uncomfortable position. The politician who took such a unique stand in defense of these principles was not merely a Republican but a leading member of its dreaded Tea Party wing, while the actor most responsible for the extremist theories of power being protested was their own beloved leader and his political party.”

Ignorance is Strength: Kim Jong Un Edition

nodrop6

“For one state to respond to another state’s military aggression by killing, or threatening to kill, its civilian population is monstrous. And if it’s monstrous, it’s monstrous when anyone does it. It would also be monstrous if some purely hypothetical country, the only country in the world with atomic weapons, used them to kill several hundred thousand civilians in two Japanese cities. It would be monstrous if some purely hypothetical country with hundreds of long-range bombers had had, as its official military policy, making first use of nuclear weapons and hitting every major population center in the USSR in retaliation for a conventional incursion into Western Europe.”

Rep. Peter King: US could make preemptive strike on North Korea

“Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.) said Tuesday that the U.S. had the right to take preemptive military action against North Korea if there was ‘solid evidence’ that Kim Jon Un planned to attack the U.S. or South Korea.  ‘I don’t think we have to wait until Americans are killed or wounded or injured in any way,’ he continued. ‘I’m not saying we should be rushing into war, don’t get me wrong, but if we have solid evidence that North Korea’s going to take action, then I think we have a moral obligation and an absolute right to defend ourselves.’  North Korea’s actions are thought to be driven by additional United Nations sanctions that resulted from its recent nuclear test.”

71st Anniversary: Roosevelt’s Concentration Camps

“The U.S. government had several governments in South America round up Japanese residents, who were then shipped to the U.S. The government put them in concentration camps. These camps received no publicity. One of them was in Crystal City, Texas.  This was kidnapping, pure and simple.  This story is so horrifying that the history textbooks never mention it. You will see no show about it on the History Channel. You can read about it here.  These people were sent to Japan after the war.”

U.S. will ‘respond’ to North Korea’s provocations, says Chuck Hagel

“Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said Thursday that the United States was ‘prepared to deal with any eventuality’ from North Korea and warned that danger from Pyongyang was on the rise.  ‘We will unequivocally defend — we are unequivocally committed — to that alliance with South Korea as well as our other allies in that region of the world,’ Hagel told reporters.  ‘We will be prepared…to deal with any eventuality,’ Hagel said after the United States flew two nuclear-capable B-2 stealth bombers on a mission over South Korea. ‘We must make clear that these provocations by the North are taken by us very seriously and we’ll respond to that,’ Hagel said.”
