Freedom Train Rolls? Legitimate ‘Color’ Revolution in Brazil

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“The Free Brazil Movement, a growing force that is more focused than the 2013 unrest that expressed a wide range of middle-class anger. Brazil’s new wave of protests are seen as a right-leaning movement clearly channeled against Rousseff and her Workers’ Party. A widening kickback scandal at Petrobras, the state oil company, is one of several complaints undermining the administration. Kataguiri and others are striking a chord with Brazilians fed up with soaring inflation, a high and growing tax burden, and those who blame government intervention for hobbling Brazil’s economy, which grew just 0.1 percent last year and is expected to shrink in 2015.”

Iran Stock Fever Reaches London as Firms Rush to Build Funds

“London-based money managers including Charlemagne Capital Ltd. and First Frontier Capital Ltd. are putting together sanctions-compliant funds to allow investors to buy Iranian equities ahead of the buzz that they expect a final agreement would generate.  While there’s the possibility, of course, that the preliminary pact Iran carved out with global powers doesn’t lead to a full-fledged deal, the money managers are in essence saying they’d rather run the risk of arriving too early than miss a rally in Tehran’s $110 billion equity market. Even amid the standoff, the gauge jumped 300 percent in dollar terms in the five years through 2013.”

Investors are lining up to get into Iran

“At the moment, international sanctions make it nearly impossible for anyone outside of Iran to invest there. Even those in other Middle Eastern countries have largely stayed away. But all that could change if the nuclear deal is approved and sanctions are removed.  Iranians are certainly optimistic. The Tehran Stock Exchange has surged nearly 8% since the deal was announced on Thursday. Interest in doing business in Iran started long before last week. Everyone from investors to banking institutions to auditors have been analyzing the possibilities. The country has large natural resources and, equally as important, a well-educated workforce.”

“Czars” No More: New Mexico Bans Policing for Profit

“New Mexico is small, but this move is significant because it shows the breakdown of a decades-old national political consensus between law enforcement bureaucracies and ‘law and order’ politicians, a Bootlegger-and-Baptist coalition that helped create and sustain the civil forfeiture regime.  Combined with former AG Eric Holder’s modest reform of a federal program that allowed police to do an end-run around state laws limiting forfeiture, there is hope that the moral cover for this deeply corrosive practice is being stripped away, and the public will finally see it for what it is: a racket.”

New Mexico Bans Civil Asset Forfeiture

“Today, Governor Susana Martinez signed HB 560 into law, ending the practice of civil asset forfeiture in New Mexico. Civil asset forfeiture, also known as ‘policing for profit,’ allows law enforcement officers to seize personal property without ever charging—much less convicting—a person with a crime. Property seized through this process often finds its way into the department’s own coffers. HB 560, introduced by NM Rep. Zachary Cook and passed unanimously, replaces civil asset forfeiture with criminal forfeiture, which requires a conviction of a person as a prerequisite to losing property tied to a crime.  New Mexico now has the strongest protections against wrongful asset seizures in the country.”

North Korea’s No. 2 official visits South for rare talks at Asian Games

“North Korea’s presumptive No. 2 led members of Pyongyang’s inner circle on a rare trip Saturday to South Korea for the close of the Asian Games, with the rivals holding their highest level face-to-face talks in five years.  After months of tensions, including a steady stream of insults between the divided neighbors and an unusual number of North Korean missile and rocket test firings, expectations for a breakthrough weren’t high, but even the visit itself was significant, allowing valuable contact between confidants of North Korea’s authoritarian leader and Seoul’s senior official for North Korean affairs.”

U.S. won’t stop Native Americans from growing, selling pot on their lands

“Opening the door for what could be a lucrative and controversial new industry on some Native American reservations, the Justice Department on Thursday will tell U.S. attorneys to not prevent tribes from growing or selling marijuana on the sovereign lands, even in states that ban the practice.  The new guidance, released in a memorandum, will be implemented on a case-by-case basis and tribes must still follow federal guidelines, said Timothy Purdon, the U.S. attorney for North Dakota and the chairman of the Attorney General’s Subcommittee on Native American Issues.”

Germany’s top publisher bows to Google in news licensing row

“Germany’s biggest news publisher Axel Springer has scrapped a move to block Google from running snippets of articles from its newspapers, saying that the experiment had caused traffic to its sites to plunge.  Springer said a two-week-old experiment to restrict access by Google to some of its publications had caused web traffic to plunge for these sites, leading it to row back and let Google once again showcase Springer news stories in its search results.  Chief Executive Mathias Doepfner said on Wednesday that his company would have ‘shot ourselves out of the market’ if it had continued with its demands for the U.S. firm to pay licensing fees.”

UPS and FedEx Just Got a Major Boost in the Chinese Market

“The Chinese government’s cabinet has pledged to move toward internationalizing the country’s package delivery industry, signaling new profit potential for United Parcel Service and FedEx as China’s retail sector shifts to online shopping.  The parcel delivery business will be ‘fully opened up’ to ‘create a fair and competitive business environment in which domestic and foreign-financed enterprises receive equal treatment,’ according to a summary of the State Council decision posted late Wednesday on a government Web site. The government is promoting online shopping as a key way to expand the economy’s consumer sector and cut China’s dependency on exports.”

Visa, Mastercard welcome Beijing’s plans to free bank cards market

Visa Inc and Mastercard Inc welcome China’s plans to open up its market for clearing domestic bank card transactions, as they stand to gain access to a growing market worth more than $1 trillion a year.  While China lags behind countries such as the United States in spending on credit, habits are changing fast and the Chinese are increasingly swiping plastic to satisfy their growing appetite for consumer goods.  The State Council, China’s cabinet, said on Wednesday after a weekly meeting that foreign firms that meet its criteria could set up their own clearing companies. It did not provide details. Household debt in China amounted to just 37% of GDP at the end of July, compared with 81% in the U.S.”
