John Paulson: Puerto Rico Is Now ‘Singapore of the Caribbean’

“Billionaire hedge-fund managerJohn Paulson said today that Puerto Rico’s economy is at the beginning of a turnaround and predicted the island will become the Singapore of the Caribbean.  Paulson, speaking today at the 2014 Puerto Rico Investment Summit in San Juan, a conference designed to promote the territory and attract investors, said he’s building a home in the commonwealth. The hedge-fund manager, who last year considered relocating to Puerto Rico to take advantage of new tax laws, said opportunities to buy real estate in the region won’t last much longer, and he’s looking to purchase sites that can be developed to serve people he expects to move here.”

Move to Puerto Rico and Pay Zero Capital Gains Tax

“You can jettison ALL United States tax on interest, dividends, and capital gains. This is possible because Puerto Rico, while a commonwealth of the United States, is treated as separate for tax purposes. By moving to PR, you can opt out of the Federal tax system and in to the PR tax program. Retired? Puerto Rico does not tax social security or unemployment income.  Capital assets (such as land, stocks, bonds, etc.) acquired after moving to PR are tax free. As for property acquired prior to becoming a resident, special provisions can result in a 10% long term rate from the day you qualify and a 5% tax rate applies to property acquired prior to becoming a resident and held for at least 10 years.”

US Sentencing Commission Votes to Cut Drug Sentences

“The US Sentencing Commission (USSC) voted unanimously Thursday to reduce sentences for most federal drug trafficking defendants. The move comes as the federal prison population continues to increase, driven in large part by drug offenders, even as prison populations in the states are on the decline.  USSC said the changes would affect about 70% of federal drug trafficking defendants and would result in an average sentence decrease of 11 months. That means the average federal drug trafficking sentence will drop from just over five years to just over four years.  There are currently more than 216,000 federal prisoners. Slightly more than half are doing time for drug offenses.”

Peter Schiff Goes to Puerto Rico

“Once I officially move to Puerto Rico, then I can get tax-free dividends on Puerto Rican-sourced income, which would include my business that has moved to Puerto Rico.  I can also make investments in the stock market and enjoy zero capital gains tax. Once I move to Puerto Rico, I can trade IBM as often as I want, and no matter how much money I make, I pay zero capital gain taxes in Puerto Rico, and I pay zero capital gain taxes in the United States.  So pretty much anything that you can do via the Internet, via the telephone, if you do it from Puerto Rico, you’re going to hardly pay any income tax, which is kind of the way it used to be in America.”

Rancher, armed militias win standoff with Feds; govt returns cattle

“The tense stand-off between hundreds of protesters and police has ended in the Nevada desert, forcing the authorities to cancel the round-up of 300 animals and to return the cattle to their owner.  The standoff between rancher Cliven Bundy and the US Bureau of Land Management has lasted over a week, after hundreds of armed agents with the United States Bureau of Land Management and the FBI turned up in the Clark County to execute the court-ordered confiscation of nearly 1,000 cattle. The US government says the animals have trespassed on federal property.  This provoked a fierce backlash from anti-government groups, right-wing politicians and gun-rights activists.”

Poll: Three-fourths of US says pot will be legal

“Three-fourths of Americans say it’s inevitable that marijuana will be legal for recreational use across the nation, whether they support such policies or not, according to a public opinion poll released Wednesday that highlights shifting attitudes following the drug war era and tough-on-crime legislation.  The Pew Research Center survey also shows increased support for ending mandatory minimum prison sentences for non-violent drug offenders and doing away altogether with jail time for small amounts of marijuana.  Since California became the first state to legalize medical marijuana in 1996, at least 19 others and the District of Columbia have followed suit.”

Vida Cannabis: Up, Up and Away for A Perfectly Positioned Company

“Looking for the very highest quality products and the consistency of a high-tech pharmaceuticals operation? Vida expects to file its licensing application before the end of April, a schedule that should allow it to have the necessary license in hand by the third quarter of this year. In the meantime, the company is raising $1.5 million at $.25 per share. That represents a market value of only $6 million for a company that now owns a 315,000-square-foot production plant with a replacement value estimated at $30 million. Personally, I think this will turn out to be an extraordinary investment. In less than a year’s time, this $.25 financing round is going to look extremely cheap.”

Maryland Gov. O’Malley to sign marijuana decriminalization bill

“Martin O’Malley says he will sign a bill decriminalizing the possession of small amounts of marijuana. The bill would impose civil fines rather than criminal sanctions for carrying less than 10 grams of the drug.  The Maryland Senate approved the legislation Monday on a 38-8 votes. Although it has been a battle to get the legislation on the statute books and on Saturday the House of Delegates passed the bill by just seven votes. Opponents had been insisting that decriminalization would have sent the wrong message about drug use. The bill also narrowly escaped efforts by House judiciary Committee Joseph F Vallario Jr. (D-Prince’s George’s) and others to kill it in committee.”

What Happened to Chicago’s Murder Rate After Concealed Carry Law?

“In July of 2013, Illinois became the last state in the union to enact a concealed carry law. In January of this year, the state began accepting applications for permits. This week, Chicago police announced that the city’s first quarter murder rate was the lowest since 1958.  Coincidence? Hard to say. And too early to tell. Although, I doubt that the anti-gun crowd is celebrating the good news.”

Texas Generally Exempts Bitcoin From Money Transmission Laws

“The document draws a line of distinction between bitcoins and other digital currencies and sovereign currencies like the dollar. According to the memorandum, digital currencies are not recognized as legal tender in Texas because they lack backing from an institution like a central bank, do not have intrinsic value and do not carry any guarantees of redemption.  Overall, the statements clarify the statutes which govern the establishment of third-party bitcoin exchanges that handle sovereign currencies, providing a clearer path for those who might seek licensure in Texas.  As a result, the exchange of digital currency and sovereign currency does not qualify as a money transmission.”
