Tax-free zones created around 8 NY colleges under Start-Up NY

“Gov. Cuomo has touted the program as a way to entice new businesses to New York, which is among the highest-taxed states in the country.  The state is spending taxpayers’ money on ads running across the country to promote the program.  Existing businesses have expressed concern that the new companies will have an unfair advantage.  If accepted into the initiative, businesses will operate with no income tax, business tax, corporate tax, state taxes, local taxes, sales tax, property tax and franchise fees for 10 years. To be eligible, businesses must create new jobs in the first year. Higher-paid workers would have to pay income taxes after five years.”

Pocket Enormous Tax Savings in Puerto Rico

“Never before have such incredible tax incentives been available to Americans so easily.  You see, to spur job growth and economic activity in general, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico introduced these enormous tax incentives for incoming residents and service businesses.  Specifically, for Puerto Rican residents and businesses that qualify—mostly expatriates from the US mainland or their enterprises—the recently enacted Act 22 and Act 20 provide for a zero tax rate on capital gains and certain interest and dividends earned by individuals.  And, if you a run a business that exports services like I’m doing here, they also provide for low single-digit tax rates on your profits.”

Why I REALLY Moved to Puerto Rico, and You Should Too

“This is the new land of opportunity. There is a critical combination here of an underutilized but well-educated workforce, a culture that is obviously changing for the better, and a tax regime that is committed to letting entrepreneurs reinvest more of our money back into our businesses.  Add those three together, and there would be something good going on down here. But there’s another factor: The Internet. With the ability to do many jobs from the convenience of anywhere, thanks to Skype, GoToMeeting, Gmail, Dropbox, and thousands of other tools that finally make the home office a reality, the opportunity is enormous.”

Cuba plans big tax breaks to lure foreign investors

“Cuba’s communist government has drawn up a new foreign investment law that will cut the profits tax in half and exempt investors from paying it for eight years in an attempt to attract desperately needed capital into the economy.  But the proposed law appears to withhold many of the tax benefits from companies that are 100 percent foreign-owned.  The proposed law includes a clause that bans expropriations except in cases of public interest previously established by the government, in which case investors would be compensated.  The new investment law continues the structural economic reforms under way in Cuba since President Raul Castro took over from his ailing brother Fidel in 2008.”

Denmark Declares Bitcoin Trades are Tax-Free

“The Tax Board in Denmark has ruled that gains and losses from casual bitcoin trading are not subject to taxation. Politiken reports that Denmark’s top tax authority met today to discuss digital currencies and how to approach their taxation, and the Tax Board concluded that any gains made from bitcoin trading are exempt from being taxed by the Danish government, and similarly any losses from trading are not deductible.  The exception to this new ruling is for businesses whose primary focus is in digital currencies. Businesses who directly trade with bitcoin as their primary function must declare their winnings and losses to the government.”

89% of Venetians vote to secede from Italy, form independent state

“Inspired by Scotland’s separatist ambitions, 89% of the residents of the lagoon city and its surrounding area, opted to break away from Italy in an unofficial ballot.  The proposed ‘Repubblica Veneta’ would include the five million inhabitants of the Veneto region and could later expand to include parts of Lombardy, Trentino and Friuli-Venezia Giulia.  The 1000 year–old democratic Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia was quashed by Napoleon and was subsumed into Italy in 1866.  Wealthy Venetians, under mounting financial pressure in the economic crisis, have rallied in their thousands, after growing tired of supporting Italy’s poor and crime ridden Mezzogiorno south, through high taxation.”

Scotland’s Independence: A Glimpse of America’s Future

“In September, Scots take to the polls to decide whether to end the Act of the Union of 1707 and leave the United Kingdom. Not much news on this possible secession makes it’s way to our shores, but we are watching it closely. The Scots push for freedom is fueled by feelings that being part of something bigger isn’t better.   It’s the age-old value for money proposition.  Nearly 40% are in favor with 14% being undecided. Those unsure voters will be the ones who decide if Scotland is better off alone. Scotland’s quest for independence, if successful, will be a blueprint for other European regions — or U.S. states — to do the same.”

Congressman Calls To Ban U.S. Dollar After Senator’s Bitcoin Ban Idea

“Congressman Jared Polis is calling on the Treasury to ban physical dollars in response to Senator Manchin’s plea to ban Bitcoin. ‘The exchange of dollar bills, including high denomination bills, is currently unregulated and has allowed users to participate in illicit activity, while also being highly subject to forgery, theft, and loss,’ wrote Polis in a  statement.  To be sure, the Congressman is being cheeky. ‘This is just a satirical version of Senator Manchin’s letter, meant to draw attention to the fact that BitCoins are not any more susceptible to the problems that the Senator points out than dollars,’ said Spokesperson Scott Overland.”

New York Now Accepting Applications for Digital Currency Exchanges

“New York’s Superintendent of Financial Services, Benjamin M. Lawsky, has issued a public order that confirms the state is now accepting applications for digital currency exchanges.  Lawsky indicated that these businesses will be regulated under new New York regulation, which he committed to having in place by the end of the second quarter of 2014.  In his remarks, Lawsky struck his usual balance of at once recognizing the promise of digital currencies and stressing that related business activities need to be conducted in a responsible and lawful manner.  Approved applications will need to adhere to the regulatory framework New York plans to introduce later this year.”

Vida Cannabis: Positioned for Powerful Profit Potential

“The trend toward legalization isn’t a blue-sky dream. It is happening NOW. Governments all over the world have thrown in the towel on resisting the trend and now are focused on grabbing the tax revenue it can deliver. Vast fortunes were amassed by the Kennedy and Bronfman families, among others, from the demise of U.S. Prohibition in 1933. And that was a single-country event. Even greater fortunes will be built on the relaxing of the worldwide prohibition of cannabis. We picked our horse in the race – Vida Cannabis Corp. – because in many important ways it is already in the lead.”
