Medical marijuana rally slated for Oklahoma Capitol Wednesday

“Wednesday is Medical Marijuana Day at the Oklahoma State Capitol, a topic that’s getting increasing attention as an increasing number of states decriminalize, and in some cases even legalize, the recreational use of marijuana.  The rally will take place inside and outside the Capitol, with several activities slated to occur, including lobbying efforts and training.  Cpl. Mike Griffin, who heads up a TPD Drug Task Force, doesn’t advocate legalization, but says he believes it will happen some day, even in Oklahoma. ‘This is just one guy’s opinion,’ he told KRMG. ‘Do I think it will? Yes. Will it happen before I retire? Probably not.'”

Federal judge rules drivers allowed to flash headlights as warning

“A federal judge in Missouri ruled this week held that drivers have a First Amendment right to flash their headlights to warn other motorists of nearby police and speed traps.  The order by U.S. District Judge Henry E. Autrey in St. Louis on Monday stems from a lawsuit filed by Ellisville resident Michael Elli. In 2012, Elli flashed his headlights to warn oncoming vehicles of a radar set up by police in the town of Ellisville.  A flash of headlights is a common way motorists communicate to oncoming drivers of either a dangerous situation or the presence of police — in essence, a warning to slow down.”

Davos global survey finds growing distrust in government

“Ahead of the gathering of political and business leaders in the Swiss resort of Davos, the public relations firm Edelman found that only 44 percent of university-educated people participating in the survey trusted government, down 4 percentage points from the previous year. As recently as 2011, trust in politicians stood at 52 percent.  The 2014 Edelman Trust Barometer found the largest-ever gap in its 14-year history — 14 points — between trust in government and trust in business.  Agency CEO Richard Edelman  warned that sinking trust in government could stoke a rise in support for more extreme political parties, particularly in May’s election for the European Parliament.”

Jury Nullifies Charge Against Pot Grower Who Shot and Killed a Cop

“This week a Texas grand jury declined to indict a marijuana grower for shooting and killing a sheriff’s deputy who burst into his home in the early morning to execute a search warrant. Henry Goedrich Magee, who was indicted on drug and weapon charges (the latter only because he was growing marijuana), said he believed Burleson County Sgt. Adam Sowders was a burglar. ‘This was a terrible tragedy that a deputy sheriff was killed, but Hank Magee believed that he and his pregnant girlfriend were being robbed,’ Magee’s lawyer, Dick DeGuerin, told A.P. ‘He did what a lot of people would have done. He defended himself and his girlfriend and his home.'”

It’s Getting Harder For The Feds To Lie About Marijuana

“Publicly lying about pot isn’t as easy as it used to be.  That’s the lesson White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (aka the Drug Czar’s office) Deputy Director Michael Botticelli learned earlier this week when he testified before U.S. House Subcommittee on Government Relations. Armed with what appeared to be crib notes from the days of Reefer Madness, Botticelli’s spurious anti-pot testimony immediately became the subject of Internet video fodder and mainstream mediacriticism. Even more tellingly, Botticelli’s comments drew stern rebukes from federal lawmakers on both sides of the aisle.”

Zimbabwe central bank opens market to competing currencies

“Once known for its billion dollar notes and hyper-inflation, Zimbabwe must be the only place in the world to have eight currencies as legal tender – none of them its own.  For the last five years most people have been using US dollars or South African rand, but pula from Botswana and British pound sterling have also been changing hands.  Now the central bank is also allowing the use of Australian dollars, Chinese yuan, Indian rupees and Japanese yen.  For the moment, customers can open bank accounts in these currencies but the hard cash is not yet in circulation.”

Free Market Healthcare in the Former Eastern Bloc

“To be honest, most Eastern European countries still have a very centrally planned health system, but if you look at Western Europe, most countries—except the Netherlands and Switzerland—have heavily centrally planned health systems themselves. Some more, some less.  There are a couple of very interesting examples in Eastern Europe, of what privatisation and deregulation of healthcare has achieved. I would like to highlight those, because they are also interesting for people from Western countries to get really good ammunition for arguments in why we need more markets and healthcare. Why do people benefit from more markets in healthcare?”

Washington, Colorado have few ways to stop carry-on weed

“Among the many oddities that have arisen from marijuana legalization in Washington and Colorado is this: It can be easier to get through airport security with a bag of weed than a bottle of water.  At Washington’s airports, including Seattle-Tacoma International, there’s nothing police can do to prevent travelers from flying with pot in their carry-on or checked luggage, provided it doesn’t exceed the state legal limit of one ounce. Instead, airport officials say, officers simply recommend that travelers leave it in their cars, toss it or have a friend pick it up.”

FinCEN Publishes Rulings on Virtual Currency Miners and Investors

“The Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) today published two administrative rulings, providing additional information on whether a person’s conduct related to convertible virtual currency brings them within the Bank Secrecy Act’s (BSA) definition of a money transmitter. The first ruling states that, to the extent a user creates or ‘mines’ a convertible virtual currency solely for a user’s own purposes, the user is not a money transmitter under the BSA. The second states that a company purchasing and selling convertible virtual currency as an investment exclusively for the company’s benefit is not a money transmitter.”
