UN Claims Uruguay Not Allowed to End Marijuana Prohibition

“With the recent decision to end decades of pot prohibition in Uruguay making it the first entire nation to take the step, analysts widely anticipate similar efforts around the world to accelerate. Voters in Colorado and Washington state have completely nullified the federal and international marijuana regimes.  Across Latin America and Europe, meanwhile, drug policy has been hotly debated, with at least two nations so far — Portugal and the Czech Republic — decriminalizing all drugs.  In response to the trends, UN narcotics bureaucrats, whose generous tax-funded salaries depend on the perpetuation of the war on various plants and substances, have responded with outrage and concern.”

6 Red States That Are Turning Green at a Rapid Clip

“Oklahoma’s marijuana penalties are among the most severe in America. First-time marijuana possession offenses are punishable by up to one-year incarceration and subsequent offenses are punishable by up to ten years in prison. Selling marijuana is punishable by up to life in prison! But voters are ready for a change. 57% of Oklahomans back amending pot possession penalties to a fine-only offense and 71% back the legalization of the plant for medical purposes. Legislation to legalize and regulate the possession, cultivation, and retail sale of cannabis for all Oklahoma adults is pending in the state Senate. However, Gov. Mary Fallin has stated that she opposes legalizing pot.”

American Farm Bureau calls for end to federal ban on hemp

“The American Farm Bureau Federation has approved a new policy resolution that urges the repeal of the classification of industrial hemp as a controlled substance.  The effort, led by the Indiana Farm Bureau at the national group’s annual meeting last week in Texas, puts one of the largest and most influential mainstream farm lobbying organizations squarely in the pro-hemp camp and on record opposing ‘the classification of industrial hemp as a controlled substance.’  The Farm Bureau before passed a policy resolution supporting industrial hemp research in 1995.”

An Armed People in Mexico and Their Threat to the State

“The self-defense groups have been organizing themselves–and have seized towns throughout Mexico in over 11 states–to fight against cartels like the Knights Templar in Michoacan under the umbrella of the Consejo de Autodefensas Unidas de Michoacan (Council ofUnited Self-Defense Groups of Michoacan). The Mexican government just sent their military to disarm them in Parácuaro , according to reports shooting 7-12 and killing 4 people, including an 11 year old girl, only to later return their weapons due to public pressure. People from Parácuaro came out to the main road to confront the military with sticks and stones, which forced them to return the weapons.”

Microsoft allows Bitcoin trading app on Windows Phone 8

Microsoft has approved an update to Kraken app for Windows Phone 8 that adds Bitcoin trading capabilities to the app making it the first ever app on the platform to have such a feature, as claimed by its developer.  The developer of the app Leon Cullens says that this is a major news because ‘Nobody really knew what Microsoft’s stance on bitcoin trading apps was before today, but by approving my app they have shown that they’re not boycotting Bitcoin.’  ‘That’s a huge endorsement in my opinion’, adds Cullens.”

Bitcoin Gets Support From Sberbank CEO as Russia Plans Anti-Terror Law

“Advocates of Bitcoin gained support from OAO Sberbank (SBER) chief Herman Gref, who’s urging the Kremlin to stop Russian lawmakers from curbing the use of virtual currencies in a bill designed to cut funding for terrorists.  The security committee in Russia’s lower house of parliament, the State Duma, approved a draft bill on Jan. 15 that seeks to curb anonymous transactions as a means to counter terrorism.  It’s not clear how Russia will be able to regulate virtual currencies such as Bitcoin, though, since they don’t have issuance or processing centers, according to Viktor Dostov, president of the Russian Electronic Money Association.”

Pirate Party Prompts Successful Campaign Finance Ruling for Bitcoin

“The Pirate Party is pleased that the Massachusetts Office of Campaign and Political Finance (OCPF) ruled that registered political committees can now accept donations in bitcoins.  The OCPF’s advisory opinion was in response to the Massachusetts Pirate Party’s inquiry into the rules governing bitcoin donations to political action committees. The OCPF determined that political committees could accept bitcoin contributions, subject to existing disclosure requirements and contribution limits. Political campaigns would need to convert bitcoins into US dollars within five days of receiving them, just like other financial assets such as stocks and bonds.”

IP address does not prove online piracy, says landmark US ruling

“A US federal judge wrote that a suspected internet pirate should not be prosecuted solely because his computer’s IP address was identified by a film studio. Copyright holders seeking to take offenders to court often put fake movie files online, record the hundreds or thousands of IP addresses that download it, and then provide that information to the courts in an attempt to identify and sue hapless users on the other side of the screen.  Washington District Judge Robert Lasnik said this week that the rationale begins with the assumption of guilt. Lasnik also said that there was no proof that the person who could wind up facing a lawsuit was in fact the person who chose to download ‘Elf Man’.”
