U.S. ex-DEA agent in unlikely new role with pot investment firm

“In a decade with the DEA, Patrick Moen rose to supervise a team of agents busting methamphetamine and heroin rings in Oregon – before giving it all up to join the nascent legal marijuana industry in nearby Washington state.  In November, the former federal drug agent quit his post to work for a marijuana industry investment firm, and says he relishes getting in on the ground floor of a burgeoning industry he was once sworn to annihilate.  As managing director of compliance and senior counsel for Seattle-based Privateer Holdings, Moen has added his name to a small but growing list of individuals with unlikely backgrounds who have joined state-sanctioned marijuana enterprises.”

Trust in Governments Slides to Record Low Amid U.S. Spy Programs

“Trust in governments fell, making them the world’s least-trusted institutions for a third year, according to a survey published before policy makers and executives gather for the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.  Faith in governments fell to 44 percent from 48 percent in 2013, according to the 2014 Trust Barometer survey published by Edelman, a public-relations firm. Trust in business held steady at about 58 percent, bringing its lead over government to the widest in the 14 years the poll has been taken.  Trust in CEOs is at 43 percent, above the 36 percent score for government officials, according to the survey.”

Blackwater Founder Erik Prince: War on Terror Has Become Too Big

“Erik Prince is not the kind of man one expects to make the case for slashing U.S. intelligence and military budgets.  ‘America is way too quick to trade freedom for the illusion of security,’ he told The Daily Beast. ‘Whether it’s allowing the NSA to go way too far in what it intercepts of our personal data, to our government monitoring of everything domestically and spending way more than we should. I don’t know if I want to live in a country where lone wolf and random terror attacks are impossible ‘cause that country would look more like North Korea than America.’  He said he will never work for the U.S. government again.”

Oklahoma: Marijuana Legalization Measure Introduced

“State Senator Constance Johnson (D-District 48) has introduced Senate Bill 2116, which aims to legalize the possession, cultivation, and retail sale of cannabis to adults. The proposed legislation removes all criminal and civil penalties for the possession of up to one ounce of marijuana and the personal cultivation of up to 5 marijuana plants by those over the age of 21. The bill would also create a system of retail cannabis outlets, cultivation facilities, and marijuana product manufacturers.  According to a 2013 ACLU report, Oklahoma arrests over 10,000 individuals for simple marijuana possession every year, at the cost of nearly 30 million dollars.”

Contempt of cop, America’s defiance revolution

“It’s otherwise known as asserting your constitutional rights.  Citizens, feeling empowered, are pointing smartphones, rather than just an accusing finger, at abusive authorities.  Civil libertarians with hidden cameras are challenging the so-called ‘suspicion-less’ roadblocks that police set up to catch lawbreakers. Motorists and others are fighting back in the courts and online against police shakedown rackets on U.S. highways and elsewhere.  Furthermore, they are winning. Not since the late 1960s have those in authority, from heavy-handed cops to the federal operatives sifting metadata in super-secret intelligence installations, been exposed to so much disinfecting sunlight.”

NH lawmakers kill bill to spy on motorists with license plate scanners

“House members Wednesday voted overwhelmingly — 250-97 — to kill a bill that would have allowed police to use license plate scanners, and then banned the issue for the rest of the session.  With the House vote, New Hampshire continues to be the only state in the country to prohibit the use of license plate scanners. Collecting license plate information at toll booths and bridges is allowed.  Recording license plate data is the same as Big Brother watching citizens in George Orwell’s novel ‘1984’ opponents said — or at least a big step down that slippery slope.  However, supporters of House Bill 675 said it would improve public safety and make police departments more efficient.”

New Hampshire General Assembly Approves Marijuana Legalization

“After a heated and lengthy debate on the floor of the New Hampshire General Assembly, the lower chamber of New Hampshire’s legislature today voted 170 to 162 in favor of House Bill 492, which seeks to legalize under state law the personal use and home cultivation of marijuana by persons 21 years of age or older and establish regulations for the retail production and sale of cannabis.  The historic vote makes the New Hampshire House the first state legislative chamber to ever vote in favor of regulating cannabis.”

Oklahoma state legislator introduces bill to banish NSA

“On Monday, Oklahoma Sen. Nathan Dahm (R-Broken Arrow) filed a bill that would prohibit state cooperation with the NSA and limit some of the practical effects of its vast data collection program. The Fourth Amendment Protection Act addresses the relationship between the state and the NSA in four ways.  First, it prohibits state and local agencies from providing any material support to the NSA within their jurisdiction. This includes barring government-owned utilities from providing water and electricity. Second, it blocks state universities from serving as NSA research facilities or recruiting grounds. Four Oklahoma state schools currently have partnerships with the NSA.”

EU inquiry draft finds NSA, GCHQ activities ‘illegal’ – report

“An EU parliamentary inquiry condemns ‘unprecedented’ and ‘indiscriminate’ mass data gathering by US and British agencies, calling for the practice to stop and questioning its legality.  The 51-page draft report prepared by the European parliament’s civil liberties committee’s rapporteur, British MEP Claude Moraes, has in the ‘strongest possible terms’ condemned mass surveillance activities of the NSA and its British counterpart, GCHQ.  The report calls on US authorities and EU states to ‘prohibit blanket mass surveillance activities and bulk processing of personal data,’ saying it is ‘very doubtful’ that the collection of information on the perceived is only guided by the fight against terrorism.’
