In one fell swoop, the taxpayers of Detroit have freed themselves from the economic burden of the retirement and health programs that had been promised to municipal union members.  For decades, the liberal political establishment had bought votes from the unions. They had signed agreements guaranteed to bankrupt the city.  Taxpayers moved out of Detroit. Welfare recipients stayed put. It took 40 years, but the city went bust. The judge has now confirmed the obvious. The unfunded liabilities of cities across the nation will produce a similar result. There is no escape. The solution is comparatively painless.”

Proposals announced to boost Shanghai Free Trade Zone

“In a six-page report that included 30 detailed instructions, the People’s Bank of China said yesterday it would allow residents of the zone – seen as a test bed for liberalising the financial sector – to set up ‘resident free trade accounts’ in both domestic and foreign currencies, and would allow yuan to be fully convertible under those accounts ‘when the time is ripe’.  The 29 sq km zone, the first of its kind on the mainland, was set up two months ago and the guidelines suggest it will offer benefits that Beijing has been reluctant to offer other pilot areas.  For example, ‘qualified’ individual investors will be able to make various foreign investments, including trading overseas securities.”

Startup Cities To Become Reality

“The first zones, called ZEDE, are going to be in Honduras. And yes, that is zones, plural. The legislation that has been passed in Honduras makes creating a zone incredibly easy. In an upcoming update, I will publish the laws and add some commentary – but creating a zone is going to be far easier than almost anyone imagined. Barriers to entry will be low so that competition is high. We are not out of the woods yet. Things could still go wrong, either due to internal politics in Honduras or due to outside pressure. This will continue to be true even after the first zones are set up. But at this point I am confident that the odds are in our favor. Primarily due to the genius of one man.”

Korea Announces Favorable Tax Policy for BTC

While this is clearly good news for the few long-time miners in Korea as well as speculators that have experienced a windfall in the past month, it is important to remember that this is not a good long-term position toward bitcoin. Essentially, the Korean government is taking the stance that bitcoin investments are not real.  Currently, bitcoiners are happier to be left alone by the governments of the world and such a policy supports this in the long term.”

Bitcoin Gets a Cautious Nod From China’s Central Bank

“Speaking at an economic forum on Wednesday, Yi Gang, the deputy governor of the People’s Bank of China and director of the State Administration of Foreign Exchange, said that it would be impossible for China’s central bank to recognize the Bitcoin as a legitimate financial instrument in the near future. But, Mr. Yi added, people are free to participate in the Bitcoin market and he would personally adopt a long-term perspective on the currency.  The statement comes during a week of remarkable turbulence on China’s numerous Bitcoin exchanges.”

UN Drug Bureaucrats Fret About Uruguay’s Marijuana Legalization

“Uruguay is blowing off the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) as it prepares to become the first country to legalize marijuana commerce, and the INCB is ‘concerned.’ The South American nation failed to send a delegation to Vienna to listen to the INCB complain about its plans. The INCB is also ‘very concerned that the draft legislation currently being considered in Uruguay would, if adopted, legalize production, sale and consumption of cannabis for recreational purposes.’  Uruguay’s marijuana legalization bill, backed by President Jose Mujica, has already passed the lower house of parliament and is set for a vote soon in the upper house.”

How times have changed: Eric Schmidt on privacy in 2009 and today

“Back in 2009, Google CEO Eric Schmidt told CNBC that ‘if you are doing something you don’t want anybody to know, maybe you shouldn’t be doing it in the first place.’ Yesterday, the Wall Street Journal published an interview with Schmidt, during which he said: ‘The NSA allegedly collected the phone records of 320 million people in order to identify roughly 300 people who might be a risk. It’s just bad public policy…and perhaps illegal. You have to take a strong position in favor of privacy. Privacy is really the right to be left alone. Do you really want the government tracking all of those information, especially if you’re just a domestic citizen who is just going about your life?'”

Google’s Schmidt Sees Encryption Killing Censorship

“Protecting Internet traffic with hard-to-crack code may prevent governments from censoring their populations’ communications within a decade, Google Inc. (GOOG) Chairman Eric Schmidt said.  Schmidt described the coming of a ‘network age’ in which Internet users communicate and organize socially through private channels shielded by encryption, which scrambles data with a mathematical formula that can be decoded only with a special digital key.  ‘We can end government censorship in a decade,’ Schmidt said during a speech in Washington. ‘The solution to government surveillance is to encrypt everything.'”
