Cruz’ plan B for defunding Obamacare: ‘Shut down the military’

“Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) on Sunday warned Senate Republicans that refusing to filibuster a bill that defunds President Barack Obama’s health care reform law ‘is a vote for Obamacare,’ and he also advised House Republicans to ‘shut down the military’ if they had to.  ‘If Harry Reid kills the bill in the Senate, the House should hold its ground, and should begin passing smaller continuing resolutions, one department at a time,’ Cruz explained. ‘It should start with a continuing resolution focused on the military.’  ‘Send it over, see if Harry Reid is willing to shut down the military,’ he quipped.”

With its leaders facing trial, Kenya quits International Criminal Court

“Yesterday Kenya’s parliament voted to pull out of the ICC – the first African country to do so. That decision comes shortly before the ICC starts trials of Kenya’s president and vice president. So far both men have said they will appear at The Hague, but speculation has begun that the vote may be the first step toward cutting off cooperation.  President Uhuru Kenyatta and Vice President William Ruto were indicted for mass violence and deaths after the 2007 elections. This summer ICC officials hinted that they might allow parts of Ruto’s trial to take place in Kenya or Tanzania. But today, less than 24 hours after Kenyan lawmakers in a raucous session voted to leave the ICC, the possibility was ended.”

Eric Margolis: US Struggle With Iran’s Peace Offensive

eric-margolis2

“Iran is now making a major push to convince the world it has no nuclear weapons ambitions, starting with its spiritual leader, Ayatollah Khomenei who has issued a fatwa condemning all nuclear weapons.  The logical course for the United States to follow is to welcome Iran’s overtures and restore normal relations between the two powers. An Iran aligned to the outside world is less likely to be troublesome than the angry, frightened, besieged Iran of today.  Furthermore, Washington has at some point got to accept that Iran is an influential regional power with its own legitimate interests.”

Iran’s new president promises: We will never make nuclear weapons

“NBC aired a longer excerpt from Curry’s interview with Rouhani Wednesday night, in which he tells Curry Iran has never tried to build a nuclear weapon. Instead, he explained, ‘We solely are looking for peaceful nuclear technology.’  ‘Can you say that Iran will not build a nuclear weapon under any circumstances whatsoever?’ Curry asked.  ‘The answer to this question is quite obvious,’ Rouhani responded. ‘We have time and against said that under no circumstances would we seek any weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear weapons, nor will we ever.'”

Oklahoma poll reveals overwhelming support for marijuana law reform

A new poll conducted by Sooner Poll in Oklahoma reveals near-overwhelming support for both decriminalization of marijuana and legalizing the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes.

The poll, in which 85% of respondents identified as age 45 or older, demonstrated a tiny minority of 18% identifying as strongly opposed to allowing patients to use marijuana for medicinal purposes, while 71% “supported” or “somewhat supported” allowing the use of marijuana pursuant to a doctor’s recommendation.  In a state that had sentenced a father of four to 93 years in prison for growing medical marijuana to treat his rheumatoid arthritis, the poll result indicates that the overwhelming body of research indicating that marijuana is both a safe and effective treatment for a variety of maladies is beginning to resonate with voters.

Likewise, 57% of respondents supported or somewhat supported the idea of decriminalizing the possession of up to one ounce of marijuana for recreational purposes, making such cases subject only to a fine.  Only 39% stood in opposition, either somewhat or strongly.

The poll of likely voters in the reddest of the red states, where 87.9% of respondents identified as either moderate, somewhat conservative, or very conservative, also showed 64% of respondents in favor of a policy of referral to treatment rather than incarceration, while only 27% supported the present incarceration-based marijuana policy.

Perhaps most notably, Oklahomans’ independent streak was in full display as a whopping 82% of voters insisted that marijuana laws should be determined by state governments rather than the federal government.  A mere 17% supported the current regime, wherein marijuana is classified federally as a Schedule I controlled substance and enforced as such on a nationwide basis regardless of local laws or opinion.  The result suggests that the increasingly utilized principle of nullification will feature prominently in charting Oklahoma’s path out of marijuana prohibition.

Oklahoma voters would display fiscal and economic pragmatism in joining their neighbor Colorado, which in a statewide vote recently legalized the sale and consumption of marijuana for adults 21 and over.  The marijuana industry in Colorado is estimated to rake in over $600 million per year in fiscal year 2014-2015, with a corresponding uplifting effect on jobs and tax revenues in the state.

The poll was conducted by Sooner Poll from August 28th to September 9th, 2013 and has a ± 4.9% margin of error.  For more information, contact Norma Sapp with Oklahoma NORML at norma@oknorml.org.

Young Greeks Helping Each Other to Combat Crisis

“The political class may have set the rules, but almost everyone adhered to them. Now the game is over, and there is no money left for fakelaki and rousfeti, corruption and nepotism, two basic principles of Greek political life until now. Suddenly there is room for those who want to set up new rules, and who want change and more cooperation. Some 3,000 initiatives were established throughout Greece in the last three years. They all have the same goal: to do things better than before. There are food cooperatives, community gardens, social pharmacies and neighborhood assistance programs for the poor.  In Crete alone, there are now five alternative currencies.”

Federal marijuana decision clears way for Oregon hemp production

“Oregon is one of seven states with laws that permit the production of industrial hemp, a non-intoxicating relative of marijuana grown for its sturdy fiber and seeds.  Elsewhere in the country, hemp advocates have reacted to the federal government’s new position on cannabis by moving ahead with legal hemp production.  Kentucky’s top agriculture official said the Cole memo is all he needs to move forward.  India is the largest market for Canadian hemp by weight, though the United States buys more hemp seed than any other country, generally for food and beauty products. China, also a major international exporter of hemp, tends to produce hemp that’s used for textiles.”

Fighting marijuana … or reality?

“Americans are becoming deaf to the critics of pot legalization. Their hyperbolic claims about the dangers of pot — along with the realistic ones — are being dismissed by a justifiably cynical public. Anti-marijuana propaganda isn’t stopping the march toward national legalization, but the opposition is losing its voice as it screams about the falling sky.  A majority of Americans favor full legalization.  So why can’t the opposition discuss these problems realistically?  It’s simple: Because the only rational conclusion is that the dangers of pot are not sufficient to warrant its prohibition. Yet those who have an ideological opposition to legalization appear immune to reason.”
