Son of legendary Chinese Communist military leader apologizes for Cultural Revolution

“The son of a legendary Communist military leader and politician in China has publicly apologised for persecuting people at his school during the Cultural Revolution, according to a blog. Chen Xiaolu offered his remorse to teachers, staff and students at his former school in Beijing for leading denunciations and sending people to labour camps. Chen said that while there were moves by some in China to argue in favour of the Cultural Revolution, such ‘inhumane violations of human rights should not appear again in any form in China’.”

Spain’s Central Bank Seeks Minimum Wage Suspension

“Spain’s central bank called for a suspension of the minimum wage in selected cases, saying a year-old overhaul of labor laws had made the economy more competitive but failed to encourage hiring. The Bank of Spain’s recommendation, though not binding on the conservative government, reflects growing concern among policy makers about the country’s 27% unemployment rate. Many economists have called for offering lower wages to younger workers; more than half of the job seekers under age 25 are out of work. Germany’s minijobs program pays workers up to €450 per month ($592), far less than Spain’s legal minimum of €645.”

Andrew Sullivan Change Of Heart: ‘Cameron Proves Greenwald Right’

“I can say this to David Cameron. Thank you for clearing the air on these matters of surveillance. You have now demonstrated beyond any reasonable doubt that these anti-terror provisions are capable of rank abuse. Unless some other facts emerge, there is really no difference in kind between you and Vladimir Putin. You have used police powers granted for anti-terrorism and deployed them to target and intimidate journalists deemed enemies of the state. You have proven that these laws can be hideously abused. Which means they must be repealed. You have broken the trust that enables any such legislation to survive in a democracy.”

Germany recognizes Bitcoin as a “private money,” subject to capital gains tax

“In response to a query by a member of parliament, the German Finance Ministry has declared that it accepts bitcoins as a ‘unit of account.’ The Ministry added that bitcoins are a sort of ‘private money’ and that mining bitcoins constitutes ‘private money creation.’ The Ministry also clarified that if a German taxpayer holds bitcoins for more than a year, then she is exempt from paying the 25 percent capital gains tax. Such a tax would ordinarily be paid after profiting from the sale of a stock, bond, or other security. A taxpayer would be expected to declare them as part of her assets and income as part of her annual tax return.”

German Finance Ministry recognizes bitcoin as currency

“Key aspects of the bitcoin, a popular online currency, have been recognized for legal and tax purposes by Germany, newspapers reported Saturday. The recognition, which was laid out in a Finance Ministry response to a query from a member of parliament, means Germany recognizes the online currency as a ‘currency unit’ and ‘private money,’ reported the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and the Neue Osnabruecker Zeitung. Bitcoins have been a popular form of payment among netizens since 2009 although economists question their viability because they are backed by neither a government nor a central bank.”

Concern over NSA privacy violations unites Democrats and Republicans, poll finds

“A July Washington Post-ABC News poll — before the latest disclosures reported by The Post — found fully 70 percent of Democrats and 77 percent of Republicans said the NSA’s phone and Internet surveillance program intrudes on some Americans’ privacy rights. What’s more, Democrats and Republicans who did see intrusions were about equally likely to say they were ‘not justified:’ 51 and 52 percent respectively. Nearly six in 10 political independents who saw intrusions said they are unjustified.  There was less partisan agreement in 2006, when news about the George W. Bush administration’s warrantless wiretapping program broke.”

A different world

couch1

“Official Tweets from the Seattle Police Department twitter feed: SPD Chief Jim Pugel was just driving down 4th Ave when he spotted a 79 Chevy w/fake pot leaves hanging from its rearview. Driver looked lost. That’s when Chief Pugel’s 30 years of policing experience kicked in. After stopping the car (which had out of state plates), Chief Pugel asked everyone in the car if they needed directions to Hempfest. Turns out they did.”

Detroit’s Amazing Pop-Up Anarchy

“Detroit pop-ups are not your conventional, temporary businesses such as those unsightly suburban fireworks stores, or the usual Christmas or Halloween retailers. Instead, the city has attracted art galleries, food and beverage cafes, coffee shops, clothing boutiques, tea houses, vegan restaurants, yoga workshops, antique stores, bike stores, and mercantile-type retailers. Pop-ups are a temporary arrangement, often with a defined start and end time for business operations. Detroit is the perfect place for these temporary pop-up businesses.”
