Should Advocates of Small Government Escape to Canada?

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/canadaday2009colour1.jpg

“Wealthy people seem to prefer Switzerland and the Cayman Islands, while middle-class people mostly talk about Australia and Latin America (mainly Costa Rica or Panama).  But maybe Canada is the place to go. It’s now the 5th-freest economy in the world, while the United States has dropped to 18th place.  I’m a big fan of Canada’s fiscal reforms. On several occasions, I’ve explained how Canadian lawmakers boosted economic and fiscal performance by restraining the growth of government spending.  Indeed, Canada is my main example when I explain why the United States should follow my Golden Rule of fiscal policy.”

Guantanamo Bay: The Model for an American Police State?

“What is the legacy of Guantanamo Bay? 171 men continue to languish there. The Bush torture program has been legitimized by the Obama administration, and indefinite detention has been codified as law. Guantanamo bleeds our coffers, costing $800,000 a year per detainee. And with a government that possesses the awesome power to indefinitely detain whomever it pleases, we are much, much less safe than we were 11 years ago.  Despite these obvious warning signs of a coming authoritarian state, a CNN poll from 2010 indicates that 60 percent of Americans would like Guantanamo to remain open.”

Federal Guilty Pleas Soar As Bargains Trump Trials

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/P1-BI246_PLEA_j_NS_20120923173307.jpg

“The triumph of plea bargaining in the federal system, which has gathered pace in recent years, is nearly complete. Guilty pleas last year resolved 97% of all federal cases that the Justice Department prosecuted to a conclusion. That is up from 84% in 1990. During that period, the number of federal defendants nearly doubled amid a crackdown on crimes ranging from drug trafficking to fraud, while the number going to trial fell by nearly two-thirds.  Behind the dominance of the plea bargain is the rapid growth in the number of federal criminal laws and the stiffening of sentences.”

CBO: Health-Law Tax to Hit 50% More Than Estimated

“The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office now says six million people will have to pay the individual mandate tax at a higher estimated cost of $6.9 billion to $8 billion, once ObamaCare rolls out in its entirety in 2016.  That’s two million more people getting hit with the new tax, or a 50% jump, versus what the CBO initially estimated in 2010.  The CBO now says the government’s take from the new tax will be $4 billion to $5 billion more per year than initially expected. The CBO’s analysis shows 80% of the six million expected to be hit with the new tax sit right in the middle class.”

ObamaCare – An Explosion of Regulatory Burdens

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/nobama1-e13415321119961.jpg

“According to former Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Commissioner Fred Goldberg, and supported by the Obama Administration’s own figures, ObamaCare ‘…in its current form will be a needless administrative and compliance quagmire for millions of Americans.’  Based on IRS estimates approved by the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs at the Office of Management and Budget, ObamaCare will take American job creators and families nearly 80 million hours to comply with.  Over half of that will fall on small businesses.”

D.C. Speed cameras: Traffic enforcement or highway robbery?

“Among the task force’s objectives is determining whether higher fines for speeding lead to improved driver compliance. There is much evidence to suggest that they do not. And yet, having raked in $66.7 million through the first three quarters of fiscal 2012 from speed and red light cameras, the city is gearing up to haul in an additional $86.2 million in 2013.  The economic pain caused by the high-tech crackdown cannot be overstated.”

A Silver Lining to Obummercare

“A thief who was once chief of the IRS frets that ‘the new enforcement duties’ Obummercare gives that gang of robbers may prove its Waterloo: ‘If the IRS does execute the long list of tasks assigned to it under the Affordable Care Act, there is still an unquantifiable but real risk that healthcare reform will falter or perhaps even fail because of the sheer number of moving parts and complexity of the new system. … The damage to tax administration would be serious and lasting.'”

IRS may have refunded $5 billion or more to identity thieves

“In one example, investigators found a single address in Lansing, Mich., that was used to file 2,137 tax returns. The IRS issued more than $3.3 million in refunds to that address. Three addresses in Florida, the center of the identity theft crisis, filed more than 500 returns totaling more than $1 million in refunds for each address.  In another troubling scenario, hundreds of refunds were deposited into the same bank account — a red flag for investigators searching for ID thieves who may be filing for refunds for multiple people. In one instance, the IRS deposited 590 refunds totaling more than $900,000 into one account.”

The Federal Reserve Has Been Given Police Powers, with Glock 22s and Patrol Cars

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/photo_-__2012-09-17_at_6.21.16_pm1.jpg

“Quietly, without fanfare or Congressional hearings, the USA Patriot Act in 2001 bestowed on the 12 privately owned Federal Reserve Banks, domestic policing powers. The police officers are technically known as FRLEO, short for Federal Reserve Law Enforcement Officer. The system has its own police academies for training, their own patch and badges, uniforms, pistols, rifles, police cars and the power to arrest coast to coast without a warrant. They have ranks of Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain and a recruitment ad campaign with the slogan: ‘It’s about respect and recognition from your peers. It’s you.'”

Court restores Obama’s indefinite detention power

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/guantanamoprotest-PresPanayotovShutterstock1.jpg

“A federal appeals court has temporarily frozen a lower court’s order that blocked the Obama administration from arresting and imprisoning American citizens without evidence or trial.  The stay restores the Obama administration’s authority to detain anyone it chooses on allegations that they’re connected to terrorism. A full appeal hearing before the Second Circuit is set for Sept. 28.”
