The United States Plummets to 18th in New Economic Freedom of the World Rankings

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/efw-score-2012-2010.jpg

“Last year, the U.S. fell from 7th to 10th, and I though dropping three spots was bad. But falling by eight spots this past year is a stunning decline.  Who would have thought that Scandinavian welfare states such as Denmark and Finland would rank higher than the United States? Or that Ireland, with all its problems, would be above America?  I’ve previously highlighted the good policies in Hong Kong and Singapore. And I’ve trumpeted the good policies in Switzerland and Australia, as well as Canada, Chile, and Estonia. So kudos to the leaders in those nations.  American politicians, by contrast, deserve scorn.”

A Crumbling Ledge on the Fiscal Cliff

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/kbchart1.jpg

“I plotted the number of US renunciations since 1998 against the gold price. Except for the ‘everybody feels good about America’ bubble that burst in 2008, the slope of both lines is strikingly similar. If one believes that gold is a crisis barometer, this makes sense. As the fiscal crises in the US persist, the higher taxes are likely to climb, adding more incentive for the wealth creators to leave… and take their wealth with them. The IRS appears to be losing one taxpayer for every dollar rise in the gold price.”

US Government Spends Millions Building Roads Overseas

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/mccnic.jpg

“A little known US government agency has spent hundreds of millions of US taxpayer dollars to build roads in foreign countries — including those openly hostile to American interests. The Government Accountability Office (GAO) on Wednesday released an audit of the Millennium Challenge Corporation program that was supposed to build 1132 miles of road in Armenia, Cape Verde, Georgia, Honduras, Nicaragua and Vanuatu. Only 387 miles were actually built.”

U.S. Household Income Sinks to ’95 Level

“The income of the typical U.S. family has fallen to levels last seen in 1995, a long and pernicious slide that likely means it will be a generation before Americans regain the peak income levels reached at the close of the ’90s.  A report from the Census Bureau Wednesday said annual household income fell in 2011 for the fourth straight year to an inflation-adjusted $50,054. Median annual household income—the figure at which half are above and half below—now stands 8.9% below its all-time peak of $54,932 in 1999, at the end of the 1990s economic expansion.”

WTC memorial magnificent, but at a steep price

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/36dc33f8756dad191a0f6a706700cf181.jpg

“The foundation that runs the memorial estimates that once the roughly $700 million project is complete, the memorial and museum will together cost $60 million a year to operate.  The anticipated cost has bothered some critics and raised concerns even among the memorial’s allies that the budget may be unsustainable without a hefty government subsidy.  The foundation plans to spend at least a fifth of its operating budget, or around $12 million per year, on private security because of terrorism fears. Visitors to the memorial plaza pass through airport-like security, and armed guards patrol the grounds.”

Who Pays for the Political Conventions?

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/825944271.jpg

“Taxpayers directly contributed $18,248,300 million to the Republican and Democratic national committees, or a total of $36.5 million, to hold their presidential nominating conventionsin Election 2012. They gave similar amounts to the parties in 2008.  In addition, Congress set aside $50 million for security at each of the party conventions in 2012, for a total of $100 million. The total cost to taxpayers of the two national party conventions in 2012 exceeded $136 million.”

Paul Craig Roberts: The Republicans Cross The Rubicon

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/withkitties_150_1202.jpg

“How can the American people trust the Republicans with the awesome power of the executive branch when the Republican Party just finished demonstrating for all to see its Stalinist qualities by crushing the anti-war, anti-police state wing of its party?  Are Americans aware that the hubris and idiocy of their political leaders have now saddled Americans with the burden of two number one enemies, both well equipped with armies and nuclear weapons? Only Iran can be happy about this as it moves Iran off the front burner.”

German Constitutional Court Rejects Calls to Block ESM Fund

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/0f3831ae01c348b3a59c34545b33541d_mn2.jpg

“Germany’s highest court paved the way Wednesday for the creation of Europe’s €500 billion ($640 billion) rescue fund for indebted governments after it rejected challenges to Germany’s ratification of the ESM that argued it violated the country’s constitution.  The bailout fund will takes its place alongside plans by the European Central Bank to buy unlimited amounts of short-term government bonds issued by troubled countries.  ‘This is a good day for Germany and it is a good day for Europe,’ said Chancellor Angela Merkel. The ESM wouldn’t have been able to start work without Germany, its No. 1 contributor.”

Ron Paul: A Republic, Not a Democracy

“Last week marked the conclusion of the grand taxpayer funded spectacles known as the national party conventions.  Sadly, the Constitution and its protections are respected less and less as we have quietly allowed our constitutional republic to devolve into a militarist, corporatist social democracy. Laws are broken, quietly changed and ignored when inconvenient to those in power while others in positions to check and balance do nothing. The protections the founders put in place are more and more just an illusion. This is why increasing importance is placed on the beliefs and views of the president.”
