“American influence on the world stage is being sapped by widespread distrust of US intentions, not just in the Middle East and south Asia but also among traditional European allies, according to a survey of global opinions.  Suspicion of America outweighed faith in its good intentions by large margins in the Arab world and Pakistan, and even its heavyweight European ally Germany was more sceptical than trusting, a YouGov survey found. British and French opinion was more positive but still deeply divided.”

U.S. nears deal to cut Egypt’s debt by $1 billion

[When can U.S. taxpayers expect the same forgiveness — or will they be the ones to make up the difference instead?]  “The United States is weighing a deal with Egypt’s new rulers to relieve $1 billion worth of debt, The New York Times reported.  U.S. President Barack Obama first promised the aid in May 2011, along with another $1 billion destined to assist Egypt’s democratic transition after the fall of longtime ruler Hosni Mubarak.”

ESM Permanent Bailout Fund Prepares for Prime Time

“On Sept. 12, the German Constitutional Court will rule on lawsuits seeking to prevent the government from participating in the new bailout fund with its €700 billion firewall.  Some 37,000 Germans have joined the complaint, making it the largest such case in the history of the court.  The EFSF head has decided to proceed as though everything were going according to plan, choosing to ignore the lawsuits and the looming verdict and hiring new staff to expand the workforce from 57 to 75 employees by the end of the year and establishing a new website. A new logo has already been created.  Klaus Regling will continue to make over €300,000 a year.”

German minister wants to ban sale of Swiss banking data

“The sale and purchase of CDs listing the details of Germans suspected of stashing assets in Swiss banks to avoid taxes should be made illegal, Germany’s justice minister told a newspaper on Saturday.  Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger, a member of the Liberal party (FDP), told the Rheinische Post that buying the data was currently a grey area legally but amounted to theft.  ‘Buying this data is a murky and highly problematic area both ethically and morally speaking but also judicially,’ she said.”

“The Republican platform has a plank calling for a value-added tax. This they won’t do, we are told by the reporter. I won’t forecast, but I will say that by placing this in the platform, it makes it more likely that Obama and his gang will do it. Remember, the Feds have to mend the deficits if they want to maintain spending, and higher taxes are a way to do that, and Obama in 2010 said that the value-added tax was an option, and in 2011 he appointed an adviser (Krueger) who thinks the value-added tax is a cool idea.”

US Corporate Tax Rate So Punitive that Companies Are Moving to Welfare States

“I was a bit surprised couple of years ago to read that an American company re-located to Canada to benefit from better tax policy.  But I wasn’t totally shocked by the news because Canada has been lowering tax rates, reducing the burden of government spending, and taking other steps to make its economy more competitive.  But I am downright stunned to learn that America’s high corporate tax rate is such an outlier that companies are even moving to welfare states such as the United Kingdom.”

“At the Henry Mayor and Board of Alderman meeting on Tuesday, board members decided to allow police chief David Andrews to institute a K9 program for the Henry Police Department.  Andrews told board members that the city is missing out on possible revenues that a K9 would bring. If a drug dog alerts on a vehicle, its gives officers probable cause to search a vehicle for drugs or illegal proceeds from drugs. More drug arrests and drug, cash, and vehicle seizures lead to more revenues coming in for the police department and city.  Andrews said the military has a drug dog program and he could get a dog for the city at no upfront cost.”

Where did $50 million in RNC grants go? A lot of places

“The city has spent all but $2.7 million of the $50 million federal grant it received for Republican National Convention security.  Grant money for the Aug. 27-30 convention is paying for extra police, technology, vehicles, uniforms and gear.  Personnel costs alone are more than $26.1 million, according to the city. That money will help pay for about 3,500 law enforcement officers brought in from across the state to police the city during the convention.”
