“What is the national-security establishment? It is composed of several agencies, two of the main ones being the vast military-industrial establishment and the CIA. They are the entities that enforce the sanctions and embargoes and engage in the invasions, occupations, regime-change operations, coups, assassinations, torture, indefinite incarcerations, renditions, partnerships with totalitarian regimes, and executions. The government has been successful in convincing Americans of two things: that all this is necessary to keep them safe and that America has continued to be a free country.”

Pennsylvania tax collector sold weed outside courthouse
“Prosecutors in the Carlisle Borough, Pennsylvania said Tuesday that a 21-year-old tax collector, elected last year, was arrested for selling marijuana to an undercover police officer. George T. Hicks, a Democrat who simultaneously became the Carlisle’s first African American tax collector and the youngest tax collector in the U.S. when he was voted into office as a junior in college at just 20-years-old, insisted that he was set up by police.” [Live by the sword, die by the sword]
Google $22.5 Million FTC Fine Has No Teeth
“The Federal Trade Commission on Thursday revealed that Google has agreed to pay $22.5 million to settle charges that the company misrepresented its claim that it would not place cookie tracking files on the computers of users of Apple’s Safari browser. The settlement is a win for Google. The ‘record-setting’ fine is less than Google’s average daily profit in 2011 (about $32 million). For a person making $50,000 annually, the settlement amount is roughly comparable to a $100 speeding ticket, before taxes. Better still, settlement includes no admission of guilt.” [Yet another revenue shakedown]

Where, Oh Where Are People Going to Go to Escape the Clutches of Expanding Government?
“Wealthy French wage earners are getting ready to leave France because of the threat, from French President François Hollande, of a 75% tax on their income. The super-wealthy Denise Rich has abandoned the United States, even though she has powerful political connections in the U.S., to escape high taxes. According to the Hurun Report, published on July 31st, more than 16% of China’s rich have already emigrated, or handed in immigration papers for another country, while 44% intend to do so soon.”

Peter Schiff Opens Hard-Money Bank
“You can open accounts in dollars or gold bullion at the new Euro Pacific Bank Ltd, launched by Peter Schiff. You can even get a ‘gold debit card’ that you can use anywhere in the world. It’s backed by actual gold, which converts to whatever currency you’re needing at the time you visit an ATM. There’s one catch if you are an American: you can’t open an account at this bank if you’re a U.S. citizen. It operates outside the jurisdiction of U.S. security regulations, and does not accept accounts from American citizens or residents.”

Oakland Congresswoman Fights Medical Marijuana Crackdown
“The bill would remove from U.S. Attorney Melinda Haag’s arsenal her most reliable weapon — shutting down clubs with nothing more than a letter sent via certified mail. It would also force her to escalate or abandon the war on those pot patients who suffer from AIDS, cancer, or chronic pain. The forfeiture laws employed by Haag and her counterparts in Sacramento, Los Angeles, and San Diego were crafted in the 1980s to punish narcotics traffickers, but have been handy tools in the statewide crackdown on medical marijuana, which began last fall.”

German tax probe prosecutors act on new Swiss data leak
“The German state of North Rhine-Westphalia is pursuing tax evaders who secretly stashed cash in Switzerland, after the towns of Wuppertal and Aachen purchased two CDs from a whistleblower, including data from UBS. The Swiss have reacted angrily to the CD purchases and even issued arrest warrants earlier this year for three German tax investigators they accused of buying secret tax data. Silvia Baer, spokeswoman for the right-wing People’s Party (SVP), said: ‘If a market develops for stolen data and is even practically promoted by the government, then you will always have people who steal data.'” [The newest state-sponsored industry blossoms.]

Germans donated only €165,489 Euros to reduce €2.1 trillion debt
“An appeal by Germany’s government for generous-hearted citizens to help wipe out the country’s debt has fallen short… by over two trillion euros. Germans have only donated 165,489 euros ($203,556) to the finance ministry cause since the launch of its appeal in 2006 to reduce the national debt amounting to 2.1 trillion euros, 60 percent of which is federal and the rest regional. Average donations range from five to 20 euros, with a rare few topping 100 euros and the lowest coming in at a symbolic one cent. Anumber of economists and left-wing personalities have called for richer Germans to pay more tax or to loan part of their fortune to the state to ease debt.”
Health care law’s tax hikes are coming: Who pays?
“Some 4 million individuals without insurance are expected to pay about $55 billion over eight years. Employers could be dinged an estimated $106 billion for failing to meet the mandate, which starts in 2014. But that mandate money, whether it’s called taxes or penalties, is overwhelmed by other taxes, fees and shrunken tax breaks in the law. These other levies could top $675 billion over the next 10 years. Other major taxes are aimed at the health care industry, and some of that cost is sure to be passed along to consumers as higher prices.”

California Congresswoman Introduces ‘Medical Marijuana Property Rights Protection Act’
“The Act seeks to amend the federal Controlled Substances Act so as to exempt real property from civil forfeiture due to medical-marijuana-related conduct that is authorized by State law. Representative Lee’s bill, the first of its kind ever introduced in Congress, is a direct response to Justice Department’s increased and arbitrary use of the civil asset forfeiture statute to sanction property owners whose tenants are in compliance with state medical marijuana laws.”
