Energy Firm Caught Breaking Down Door to Install Smart Meter

“Smart Meters are a financial coup for Big Energy. This is why we are witnessing – and now catching on film – criminal acts of vandalism, breaking & entering and trespass by energy firms trying to install their next-generation ‘cash machines’ in the homes of customers. When companies are prepared to treat the properties of their customers with this much contempt, the extent to which sensitive personal data will be cared for is in little doubt.”

Cop Sues Over DC Speed Camera Program

“Sergeant Mark Robinson has spent 23 years on the force, with five years of experience working on the automated traffic enforcement unit.  Earlier this year, Robinson went public to expose how one of the city’s most profitable cameras at the Third Street Tunnel was set to the wrong speed. Robinson’s lawsuit alleges the camera program manager, Lisa Sutter, set up speed cameras improperly, voided speed camera tickets for friends, misappropriated $25,000 in government funds and ‘had an improper relationship with a non-profit organization.’ After he filed a formal complaint, Sutter lowered the scores on Robinson’s performance evaluation and rescinded his supervisory authority in the camera program.”

NJ: Text Recipients Can Be Held Liable In Texting-And-Driving Accidents

“Drivers in New Jersey were left stunned, after state Appeals Court judges found that when a driver is texting and causes an accident, the recipient of the texts can also be held liable for negligence. As CBS 2’s Hazel Sanchez reported Tuesday night, the decision stemmed from a 2009 accident where a 17-year-old girl texted a friend just before that friend crashed his pickup truck into a Morris County couple on a motorcycle.  A state Appeals Court ruled ‘that a person sending text messages has a duty not to text someone who is driving if the texter knows, or has special reason to know, the recipient will view the text while driving.'”

Elysium: The Technological Side of the American Police State

AGOW_WebAD_Small2

“While much has been said about Blomkamp’s use of Elysium to raise concerns about immigration, access to healthcare, worker’s rights, and socioeconomic stratification, what I found most striking and unnerving was its depiction of how the government will employ technologies such as drones, tasers and biometric scanners to track, target and control the populace, especially dissidents. Mind you, while these technologies are already in use today and being hailed for their potentially life-saving, cost-saving, time-saving benefits, it won’t be long before the drawbacks to having a government equipped with technology that makes it all-seeing, all-knowing, and all-powerful far outdistance the benefits.”

School District Hires Company To Monitor Students’ Social Media Posts

“The Glendale Unified School District has hired a Hermosa Beach company to monitor public social media posts made by its students to find out when teens are in trouble or causing it.  Superintendent Richard Sheehan said Geo Listening is analyzing the posts of 13,000 students at eight Glendale middle and high schools.  The goal is to give school administrators critical information as soon as possible.  ‘The whole purpose is student safety,’ said Sheehan. ‘Basically, it just monitors for keywords where if a student is considering harming themselves, harming someone else.’ He added, ‘We do monitor on and off campus, but we do pay attention during school hours.'”

Ron Paul: Private Property Is the Essence of Liberty

“Ron Paul, Distinguished Counselor to the Mises Institute, and a founding member, celebrated his 78th birthday this week. In this selection from a speech in the House of Representatives in 1999, Ron Paul outlines why private property and privacy are essential to the preservation of civil liberties. It is perhaps noteworthy that this speech was delivered before the creation of the Department of Homeland Security and before the Patriot Act, FATCA, ‘Know Your Customer,’ warrantless wiretapping, and similar regulatory and legislative developments since 2001.”

Ohio Announces Drivers License Database Facial Recognition

“Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine announced Monday that the state has for several months been using facial recognition technology in a database that allows law enforcement agents to match a face with a name, address and record at will.
The system was activated on June 6 and has already been used 2667 times so far. DeWine back then thought the program was a natural extension of existing law enforcement capabilities and was not worth announcing. That changed when former intelligence community contractor Edward Snowden kicked off a firestorm of controversy by revealing the extent of NSA collection of domestic emails and telephone records.”

Bar Shares Scanned ID Card Data with Cops

“Across the country, citizens are surprised and sometimes outraged by increasing demands by businesses and government to submit to the instant capture and downloading of all of the data contained on their driver’s licenses and ID cards as a condition for access.  You might wonder what your data is being used for after it is taken.  The article below gives one example of how your once lowly driver’s license that is now empowered with machine readable technology (RFID or 2D barcodes) and your facial biometrics, is performing exactly as designed.  These technologies are designed to make you easier to track, monitor and control.”

One Man’s Trash is Another Man’s Big Data

“In 2012, the Senseable City Lab, part of MIT, conducted an experiment called Trash Track to see just what happens when someone takes out the trash. By attaching transmitters to over 3,000 pieces of rubbish they were able to track where that item went, whether they went to the correct recycling facility or not, and how far they traveled. Now move to the story in the papers last week about the Renew bins in London. It came to light that a dozen of London’s recycling bins fitted with digital screens were tracking each smartphone and device that connected to them with WiFi. It allowed advertisers to deduce whether the same phone — although not necessarily the same person — is passing by”

Banish the trolls, but web debate still needs anonymity

“So the proprietor of the Huffington Post has decided to ban anonymous commenting from the site.  It seems like common sense [that people will behave better]. Whether it is supported by evidence is uncertain. The most striking study I’ve come across is the experiment conducted by the (South) Korea Communications Commission from July 2007. From that month onwards, anyone wanting to comment on any of the 146 Korean websites with more than 100,000 members was required by law to submit resident registration or credit card details. The hypothesis behind the requirement was that people would behave better online if they were easily identifiable. But it didn’t turn out that way.
