New Public Safety Broadband Network: Tool For A Domestic Secret Police?

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/chain_link_lights__by_thomas_hawk_500x2801.jpg

“Journalists and protesters are attempting to use technology such as smartphones (and their always-ready cameras) to protect their rights, while the police are not only trying to curb such uses of photography (as we have noted in all our work on photographers’ rights) but, according to today’s story, are also seeking to use the very same technology to carry out surveillance on those protesters.  This battle over technology is at root a power struggle. Will technology increase the power of the individual, or of the authorities?”

As Low Rates Depress Savers, Governments Reap Benefits

“Though bad for people trying to live off their savings, low interest rates happen to be quite good for anyone borrowing money, like governments themselves.  Along with keeping rates low, governments are using a variety of tactics to encourage captive audiences, like pension funds and banks, to buy their debt. Consumers, in other words, are subtly subsidizing governments without even knowing it. Economists have compared this phenomenon to a hidden tax on people’s wealth.”

Maastricht mayor does u-turn over cannabis club membership

“Locals in Maastricht should no longer have to formally register as marijuana users to buy soft drugs from the city’s cannabis cafes, mayor Onno Hoes said in a letter to councillors on Wednesday.  Hoes says the number of foreigners trying to buy soft drugs has fallen so sharply that the membership cards are no longer necessary.  Hoes also hopes this will reduce the number of street dealers who have appeared since the ban was introduced.  The marijuana pass system is due to be introduced in the rest of the country, including Amsterdam, in January next year.”

GM’s Volt: The ugly math of low sales, high costs

http://s1.reutersmedia.net/resources/r/?m=02&d=20120910&t=2&i=651361188&w=460&fh=&fw=&ll=&pl=&r=CBRE8890BQN00

“Nearly two years after the introduction of the path-breaking plug-in hybrid, GM is still losing as much as $49,000 on each Volt it builds.  Cheap Volt lease offers meant to drive more customers to Chevy showrooms this summer may have pushed that loss even higher. There are some Americans paying just $5,050 to drive around for two years in a vehicle that cost as much as $89,000 to produce.  GM is still years away from making money on the Volt, which will soon face new competitors from Ford, Honda and others.”

Sweden aims to be cashless society

“Swedes are amongst the technologically savvy people on the planet, based on their high rates of use of mobile phones and internet banking. In fact, only three per cent of all financial transactions in the country are made using cash these days. Even public transport tickets can now be pre-paid using mobile phone technology, and most people use similar services to pay for everything from groceries to major purchases. Al Jazeera’s Linda Nyberg reports from Stockholm.”

Fox 25 Covers Consumer Concerns About Driver’s License Scanning

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/sticker-trick1.jpg

“Turning our driver’s license into an all purpose access and identity card is contributing to the creation of a 24/7 digital footprint that can be recalled on each of us.  While it may be more convenient and efficient for corporations and the government, it makes us less secure.  Last night Fox 25 News took a look into the practice.  I talk about a sticker trick you can use to protect yourself from ‘sudden scanning shock’ and Fox 25 News Legal Analyst, David Slane gives his opinion on the matter and says that the the ‘sticker trick’ does not run afoul of any state laws.”

Smartworld – Identity Ecosystem

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/pc150x225.gif

“NSTIC is flourishing, alongside similar schemes around the world. The plan is to make each national system standardized, and able to communicate with systems in other countries; leading to interoperability on a global scale, where all citizens have a single, virtual, global ID. This ID will be smart: using an identity device which proves your credentials, which employs microchips, RFID, and biometrics to grant or deny access and other privileges. At first the system will be voluntary, but eventually a tipping point will be reached where it becomes impossible to participate in society without submitting your personal details to an Identity Provider.”

Good Genes?

“If 23andMe has its way, the Whitaker family’s life-changing experience is a harbinger of things to come. At the end of June, the California-based company–co-founded by Anne Wojcicki, who is married to Google co-founder Sergey Brin–announced that it is seeking the blessing of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its $299 panel of tests that give ordinary people a window into their extraordinary DNA. Assuming it gets that governmental gold seal (the FDA has 90 days to respond), there’s a good chance that cheapie DNA tests could become increasingly commonplace. That’s great if you’re an information lover.”

Researchers demonstrate first backdoor “hack” into the human brain

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/brain-bci-backdoor-hack-0.jpg

“Once the preserve of science fiction, brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have advanced to the point where they can even be found in novelty headwear, which only makes an achievement of an international team of scientists more frightening. Using an off-the-shelf Emotiv BCI costing only a few hundred dollars, the team has shown that it’s possible to ‘hack’ a human brain and pull things like bank details straight out of your skull.”

Fluoride: Portland City Council poised to back water treatment

http://www.trbimg.com/img-5048e1f3/turbine/la-na-nn-portland-fluoride-water-20120906-001/600

“The latest battleground is Portland, Ore., the largest U.S. city that doesn’t put fluoride in its municipal water supply. That appears about to change: A majority of the City Council has signaled a willingness to vote next week in favor of an ordinance to inject fluoride into drinking water, heading off a promised ballot initiative seeking to prevent it.  The debate in free-thinking Portland has been a contest between the overwhelming weight of mainstream medical organizations and concerns of some critics about possible links to lower IQ and bone cancer, as well as citizens’ right to choose what is in their water. Oregon voters have rejected water fluoridation three times.”
