California collects, owns and sells infants’ DNA samples

“If you were born in California since 1983, the state owns your DNA.  The data of every Californian born since that year is kept in a bland office building in Richmond, a city located in the eastern section of the San Francisco Bay Area.  That data’s not just passively kept, mind you: it’s also being sold, to third parties, for research purposes.  That biometric data, taken by a heel prick at birth to screen for 80 hereditary diseases, represents a wealth of information on an individual, from eye and hair color to pre-disposition to diseases such as Alzheimer’s and cancer. Besides being sold – in purportedly de-identified form, it’s also available for law enforcement requests.”

The Man Who Sowed the Seeds of Puerto Rico’s Collapse

“It is indeed a crisis but one that was, to an embarrassing extent, made right here in America.  It was foisted on Puerto Ricans by one lousy New Dealer in particular. His name was Rexford Guy Tugwell.  By 1941, Rexford Guy Tugwell had behind him a 20-year career of pontificating for big government and managing expensive government flops. Somehow that gave Franklin Roosevelt the idea of naming him governor of Puerto Rico. What Tugwell did for the mainland, he could now do for an island. Maybe this central planning stuff works better if you work small, right?”

Freedom or the Slaughterhouse? The American Police State from A to Z

AGOW_SMALL1

“Despite the best efforts of some to sound the alarm, the nation is being locked down into a militarized, mechanized, hypersensitive, legalistic, self-righteous, goose-stepping antithesis of every principle upon which this nation was founded. All the while, the nation’s citizens seem content to buy into a carefully constructed, benevolent vision of life in America that bears little resemblance to the gritty, pain-etched reality that plagues those unfortunate enough to not belong to the rarefied elite. For those whose minds have been short-circuited into believing the candy-coated propaganda peddled by the politicians, here is an A-to-Z, back-to-the-basics primer of what life in the USA is really all about.”

Accusations Tom Selleck Stole California Water Dropped

“Water from a public hydrant that Tom Selleck has been accused of stealing from in dry California was legally purchased, an official said.  The Calleguas Municipal Water District in Ventura County sued the ‘Magnum, P.I.’ star, alleging that a tanker truck filled up at the hydrant and took it to Selleck’s 60-acre ranch more than a dozen times in the past two years.  The district announced a tentative settlement with Selleck on Thursday.  Construction firms and contractors can obtain special meters that allow them to haul water from hydrants for large projects.  The water district said it spent nearly $22,000 for a private detective to investigate.  District officials declined to provide details.”

Former Bank of England Economist: Make Cash Illegal

“Your current account will no longer be held with a bank, but with the government or the central bank. Banks still exist, and still lend money, but they get their funds from the central bank, not from depositors.  Having everyone’s account at a single, central institution allows the authorities to either encourage or discourage people to spend. To boost spending, the bank imposes a negative interest rate on the money in everyone’s account – in effect, a tax on saving.  Faced with seeing their money slowly confiscated, people are more likely to spend it on goods and services. When this change in behaviour takes place across the country, the economy gets a significant fillip.”

Speeding Ticket in Finland Costs Businessman $58,000

“When the ‘day fine system’ was devised for petty crimes, Finland did not even have any speed limits on its roads. Those did not arrive until the 1970s.  Back then, the police had to rely on the honor system, that is, asking drivers to declare their incomes, before calculating the fine. In today’s digital age, however, a few seconds is all it takes for the police, using mobile devices, to get information directly from the Finnish tax office.  Police officials say that there are really very few tickets issued of this magnitude, though they do not keep track.  Mr. Kuisla would have gotten a fine of about 100 euros if he had been traveling three kilometers per hour slower.”

Bloomberg: The Death of Cash

“JPMorgan Chase recently sent a letter to some of its large depositors telling them it will charge certain customers a ‘balance sheet utilization fee’ of 1 percent a year on deposits in excess of the money they need for their operations.  That amounts to a negative interest rate on deposits. [..] Several central banks have discovered that depositors will tolerate some rates below zero if withdrawing cash and storing it themselves is costly and inconvenient. There are signs of an innovation war over negative interest rates. There’s a surge of creativity around ways to drive interest rates deeper into negative territory, possibly by abolishing cash or making it depreciable.”

FBI admits flaws in hair analysis over decades; 14 prisoners already dead

“The cases include those of 32 defendants sentenced to death. Of those, 14 have been executed or died in prison.  The admissions mark a watershed in one of the country’s largest forensic scandals, highlighting the failure of the nation’s courts for decades to keep bogus scientific information from juries, legal analysts said. The question now, they said, is how state authorities and the courts will respond to findings that confirm long-suspected problems with subjective, pattern-based forensic techniques — like hair and bite-mark comparisons — that have contributed to wrongful convictions in more than one-quarter of 329 DNA-exoneration cases since 1989.”

Congress Pushes Obama-backed National Biometric ID for Americans

“The legislation, officially dubbed the ‘Legal Workforce Act‘ (H.R. 1147), is ostensibly aimed at preventing illegal immigrants from obtaining jobs. Among the most troubling elements, though, is that the bill would purport to mandate a national ID card for every American as a condition of working. It would also force every employer in America to purchase and use so-called ‘E-Verify technology’ to check with Washington, D.C., as to whether potential employees have government permission to work. Finally, it would create a massive federal database containing sensitive data on virtually every person in the country — a database that could easily be expanded to include even more information.”

The Creepy New Security Credit Score for Spotting “Insider Threats”

“The new method, meant to identify leakers of classified information but also homegrown terrorists, drug financiers, school ground shooters, and even sexual predators, builds the security equivalent of a ‘credit score.’ It would secretly attach to every individual, while automatically generating and changing scores as behaviors and associations trigger indicators of anomalous activity. Every user, based upon clearances, time in service, personnel evaluations, derogatory information, anomalous transactions, credit score, etc., etc., will be churned in the temple of big data to detect the InThs who pose the most risk to an organization.”
