New Year Rings in Sales Tax for Amazon Shoppers in Three States

“Attention Amazon.com shoppers in Indiana, Nevada and Tennessee: Starting Wednesday, you’ll have to pay sales tax on your purchases.  Amazon agreed to begin collecting sales tax in the three states in 2014, bringing to 19 the states in which it automatically adds tax to purchases. Those 19 states have a combined population of roughly 180 million, more than half of U.S. residents. The roster of states in which Amazon collects tax isn’t scheduled to grow again until 2016, when the retailer will tax purchases in South Carolina.  Even as Amazon fights sales taxes in some states, it is supporting a bill that would apply an online sales tax nationwide.”

Paul Craig Roberts: 2014 Will Bring More Social Collapse

withkitties_150_1202

“When I was five years old, I walked to the neighborhood school by myself. Today my mother would be arrested for child endangerment.  In America punishment falls more heavily on the innocent, the young, and the poor than it does on the banksters who are living on the Federal Reserve’s subsidy known as QE and who have escaped criminal liability for the fraudulent financial instruments that they sold to the world. Single mothers, depressed by the lack of commitment of the fathers of their children, are locked away for using drugs to block out their depression. Their children are seized by a Gestapo institution, Child Protective Services, and end up in foster care where many are abused.”

NRA, gun rights groups target Sunnyvale, California, magazine ban

“If you own an ammunition magazine that holds more than 10 rounds and you live in Sunnyvale, Calif., you can keep it — as long as you also have a second home in another city.  Otherwise, a newly approved ordinance requires owners by March 6 to sell or transfer their magazines to someone outside the city, or surrender them to licensed firearms dealers or police.  California law already bans the sale of magazines holding more than 10 rounds, but Sunnyvale’s ordinance goes a step further by forbidding residents from owning such magazines. Owners who refuse to give up their magazines risk having them confiscated by police, said Orange County attorney Chuck Michel.”

Paul Krugman Is Wrong: Bitcoin Isn’t Evil, But Monetary ‘Stimulus’ Is

“Krugman asserts that bitcoin is evil because it is a ‘weapon intended to damage central banking’ and makes it harder for states to tax and monitor people. He gets it exactly backwards. A weapon is a tool used to attack someone. But bitcoin users aren’t attacking anyone; they are avoiding an attack. As the tax burden grows heavier, and surveillance intrudes more deeply, it’s reasonable for people to seek shelter. They just want to protect themselves.”

With Affordable Care Act, Canceled Policies for New York Professionals

“Many in New York’s professional and cultural elite have long supported President Obama’s health care plan. But now, to their surprise, thousands of writers, opera singers, music teachers, photographers, doctors, lawyers and others are learning that their health insurance plans are being canceled and they may have to pay more to get comparable coverage, if they can find it.  Some have received notices already; others, whose plans have not yet expired, will soon receive letters in the mail. It is unclear exactly how many New Yorkers are affected; according to state health officials, as many as 400,000 independent practitioners get health insurance through job-related group plans.”

Grand Illusion: Social Security Is a Government Insurance Program

portallogo3

“At the age of 17, in 1959, I was taught the truth in a high school civics class. The program is not funded in terms of any insurance program.  First, the Supreme Court of the United States in 1960 declared that the Social Security program is not an insurance program. The case was Fleming v. Nestor.  Second, there is no money in the Social Security Trust Fund. There is merely a stack of IOUs issued by the Treasury Department.  There is no money in this fund. The government has spent every dime.  To get money to pay beneficiaries, the SSA must turn in some of those IOUs to the Treasury. The Treasury must then use money out of the General Fund to pay the SSA its money.”

David Galland: The Age of Entitlement

“If you accept as truth that we now live in an Age of Entitlement—an era whose hallmarks are widespread yet ultimately unaffordable and, therefore, undeliverable promises, benefits, services, etc.—then it behooves us to fill another gourd of maté and imagine where it all leads.  Before we engage in that exercise, however, it may be worthwhile to review a few supportive data sets, tidily organized into easily grasped charts.  As it’s all but impossible to dial back the bulk of the entitlements—or, given the demographics involved, do much to retard their speedy growth—we can reasonably expect the quantitative easing to accelerate over time.”

‘Forget About The Price Tag’ wins HHS grand prize for promoting Obamacare

“The Department of Health and Human Services has crowned a YouTube video entitled ‘Forget About The Price Tag’ as the grand prize winner in a contest meant to encourage young people to sign up for Obamacare.  The video contest, announced in August — in partnership with a group called Young Invincibles — encouraged participants to produce clips filled with pro-Obamacare messaging.  HHS’s grand prize-winning video, announced Monday by the White House, features a young woman named Erin McDonald singing an Obamacare-loving version of Jessie J’s hit single, ‘Price Tag.’  McDonald won $2,000 for her efforts, according to the contest’s website.”

US fast-food workers strike over low wages in nationwide protests

“As a large ‘Christmas Grinch’ ambled about in freezing temperatures, demonstrators chanted for the minimum wage to be increased to $15 per hour.  It was the first of nine strikes in Chicago, with employees at McDonalds, Wendy’s, Walgreens, Macy’s and Sears also due to walk off shift. Low wage workers were due to strike across 100 cities through the day, including Boston, Detroit, New York City, Oakland, Los Angeles and St Louis.  The president has suggested he would back a Senate measure to increase the minimum wage to $10.10. Obama had previously called for the wage to be increased in his State of the Union address in February.”

Alan Greenspan: Bitcoin Is a Bubble Without Intrinsic Currency Value

“The former Federal Reserve chairman said Bitcoin prices are unsustainably high after surging 89-fold in a year and that the virtual money isn’t currency.  ‘It’s a bubble,’ Greenspan, 87, said. ‘It has to have intrinsic value. You have to really stretch your imagination to infer what the intrinsic value of Bitcoin is. I haven’t been able to do it. Maybe somebody else can.’  ‘I do not understand where the backing of Bitcoin is coming from,’ the former Fed chief said. ‘There is no fundamental issue of capabilities of repaying it in anything which is universally acceptable, which is either intrinsic value of the currency or the credit or trust of the individual who is issuing the money.'”
