How to Lose a Constitution—Lessons from Roman History

“Rome at the time of the Catalinarian conspiracy was not the Rome of centuries before, when honor, virtue, and character were the watchwords of Roman life. By Cicero’s time, the place was rife with corruption and power lust. The outward appearances of a Republic were undermined daily by civil strife and a growing welfare-warfare State. Many who gave lip service in public to Republican values were privately conniving to secure power or wealth through political connections. Others were corrupted or bribed into silence by government handouts. The Republic was on life support and Cicero’s voice was soon to be drowned out by a rising tide of political intrigue and violence and popular apathy.”

Warplanes hit Tripoli amid Libya fighting

“Air strikes targeted a militia in Tripoli as rival armed groups from Misrata and Zintan battled for supremacy in Libya amid a worsening bout of violence.  None of the militias had been thought to own warplanes, while the central government has only an outdated air force.   The air attacks escalate a struggle between Islamist and more moderate forces as well as between militias from different cities all vying for power.  Forces from Zintan had allied themselves with Haftar and stormed parliament in May, saying it had an Islamist agenda.  Some Tripoli residents, tired of daily fighting disrupting power and food supplies, hope NATO will intervene in Libya.”

Mom Calls Cops After Discovering Son, 15, Was Watching Porn

“A South Carolina woman yesterday summoned cops to her home after she discovered that her 15-year-old son had been watching pornography on the living room television.  According to a police report, Chavonda Gallman, 40, told sheriff’s deputies that she returned to her Spartanburg home yesterday at 3 PM with her two-year-old daughter and a client (Gallman is a real estate agent). Her son was in his room when the trio arrived.  Upon entering the home, Gallman’s daughter ‘turned on the TV and there was porn on.’ Gallman told investigators that ‘they immediately turned off the TV’ and took the child out of the room.”

Facebook Down: People Call Police in Los Angeles

“If you freaked out about Facebook going down earlier today, we hope your next call wasn’t 911. Sounds obvious, right? Apparently not to everyone, according to these tweets from Sergeant Burton Brink of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.  Add this incident to the list of inappropriate times to call the police – from the British woman who called 999 because the ice cream man didn’t put enough sprinkles on her ice cream to the Florida woman who called 911 because she claimed a restaurant served her undercooked waffles.”

California’s Cap-and-Trade Revolt: Poor Face ‘Hidden’ Gas Tax

“Large manufacturers and power plants must now either purchase permits or cut their emissions to comply with a state-mandated cap, which over time will be ratcheted down. Transportation fuel suppliers will also have to pony up for permits.   Assembly Democrats fear that applying cap and trade to fuels ‘will cause an immediate jump in prices at the pump.’ While estimates vary, ‘an increase of about fifteen cents per gallon is likely and a much larger jump is possible.’  Green regulations are intended to raise the cost of gas to encourage people to drive less or buy electric cars.  As the Assembly Democrats point out, cap and trade is ‘hurting the most vulnerable members of our communities.'”

ABC tells viewers that scenes of destruction in Gaza are in Israel

“In one stark example, ABC News’ Diane Sawyer misidentifies scenes of the aftermath of Israeli missile strikes in Gaza as destruction caused by Palestinian rocket fire.  As Sawyer segues into the segment, she says, ‘We take you overseas now to the rockets raining down on Israel today as Israel tried to shoot them out of the sky.’ Next to her is video footage not of Israelis or even Israel, but of Israeli airstrikes on Gaza.  Sawyer then incorrectly describes an image of a Palestinian family gathering belongings in the smoking debris of a missile-hit home in Gaza as ‘an Israeli family trying to salvage what they can.'”

Why I Am Leaving California After 52 Years

“California has the fourth-highest state and local tax burden in nation according to the Tax Foundation. Yet, my fellow citizens blithely approved 23 of 30 local government tax increases across the state in the June 4 elections. At the same time, they approved 42 of 55 proposed ballot initiatives to raise local government or school debt even though California has the highest total state and local government debt in the nation according to State Budget Solutions.  In California, with no oversight and no transparency, regulatory agencies pass rules by the thousand and never measure if they actually work or worry about how much they cost.”

Hundreds stranded by French air traffic controller strike

“Hundreds of British air passengers have been left stranded after a French air traffic control strike caused five times as many flight cancellations as predicted.  Airlines said they expected further cancellations on Wednesday and warned of potentially worse delays to all flights crossing French airspace.  The International Air Transport Association (IATA) strongly condemned the strike action, saying it targeted holidaymakers at the start of the busy summer season.  Members of the two biggest air traffic controllers’ unions in France originally voted for a six-day strike from Tuesday in protest at budget cuts. However, one of the unions decided to drop strike action.”

Supreme Court puts TV-over-Internet startup Aereo out of business

“Aereo, a TV-over-the-Internet startup whose legal battles have been closely watched, has been ruled illegal by the Supreme Court today. If the company survives at all, its business model will have to change drastically, and it will have to pay fees to the television companies it has been fighting in court for more than two years.  In a 6-3 opinion (PDF), Aereo was found to violate copyright law. According to the opinion, the company is the equivalent of a cable company, which must pay licensing fees when broadcasting over-the-air content.  The court’s majority accepts the copyright arguments of the TV broadcasters who initiated the lawsuits against Aereo.”

Central Planning by Central Bankers

portallogo3

“The agency that controls monetary policy for the United States has an unlimited amount of money to buy support, compliance, or least silence within that segment of professionally trained economists that specializes in money and banking. The Federal Reserve gets to keep all the money that it wants for operations. It has to turn back over to the Treasury Department any money that is not used for operations, but it does not answer to Congress or the Treasury with respect to how it spends its money. This means that the Federal Reserve has essentially unlimited funds available to buy off those critics who might challenge Federal Reserve policy.”
