A Radical Constitutional Amendment to Protect Whistleblowers

“The Constitution’s failure to protect free speech at a seemingly basic level points to a major defect in its design. While it may be praiseworthy in forcefully demanding that the government it authorizes respect the rights of its citizens, it has not provided the real structural support to ensure that those demands are met. Anyone seriously interested in protecting free speech must push for a very radical ‘constitutional amendment.’ We should work not just to change the words of the document we call ‘the Constitution,’ but instead amend our legal system by completely changing the way it’s constituted.”

French woman offers to breast feed gay couples’ babies for $130 a day

“A woman has posted an offer on a French website to breast-feed babies of homosexual male couples for 100 euros ($130) a day, stirring up media interest just weeks after a divisive same-sex marriage law was passed. The offer, addressed to male homosexual couples who can marry legally in France since May, promises up to 10 breast-feeds a day.  Alexandre Woog, chief executive of the e-loue website, said staff had no doubt about the seriousness of the proposal. ‘Our legal advisers are sure of this. It’s illegal in France to sell maternal milk but this is a person proposing a service, not selling the milk in flasks,’ Woog told Reuters.”

Pakistan TV preacher defends Ramadan baby give-away

Guitarist completes first-ever paddleboard journey from Cuba to U.S.

“A Tennessee musician on Friday became the first paddleboarder to cross the Florida Straits between Cuba and the United States, making the 110 mile journey in 28 hours as his father watched from a support boat. Ben Friberg, 35, arrived in Key West dehydrated and exhausted but otherwise in good shape. Before eaving Cuba on Thursday, Friberg said he was ‘doing this to promote peace and understanding between Cuba and the United States and to promote a healthy lifestyle.'”

Defiant nuns and monks refuse to give up Kentucky land for gas pipeline

“Two Kentucky Catholic religious orders that collectively own more than 3,000 acres of historic farmland are refusing to give up portions of their lands for a proposed natural-gas pipeline that would channel millions of gallons of pressurized, highly flammable natural-gas liquids through the area. The nuns of the Sisters of Loretto and the monks of the Abbey of Gethsemani have denied surveyors permission to survey the land ahead of the pipeline project and say that they have no interest in helping it along. ‘We’ve been on this property since 1824,’ said Sister Maria Visse. ‘We feel entrusted with this (land). It’s a gift. It’s not a commodity.'”

New Hampshire Town Sues Over Meter Feeding

“A group of residents in Keene, New Hampshire thought the city was gaining a bad reputation for its predatory parking meter enforcement and decided to do something about it. The organized an effort to regularly feed coins into the meters so that other residents and visitors could avoid having an expensive ticket slapped on their windshield. Instead, they receive a card telling them that Robin Hood and the Merry Men have ‘saved you from the king’s tariff.’ As a reward for their generosity, the city is suing the Robin Hooders for civil conspiracy to interfere with a contract. A hearing on the case is scheduled for August 12.”
