Burning Up the West: Feds, Greens Cause Catastrophic Fires

“Wildfires occur naturally and have always been a part of the seasonal cycle in the West, but the size and intensity of the fires have dramatically increased in recent years due, in large measure, to the gross mismanagement of the national forests by the U.S. Forest Service and the incessant lawsuits of radical environmentalists that have thwarted all reasonable attempts at proper forest management. The unconscionable destruction of our vast forests, watersheds, and wildlife habitat is the inevitable result of policies and practices imposed by federal politicians and bureaucrats, in tandem with the obstructionist programs of extreme environmental activists.”

One Man’s Trash is Another Man’s Big Data

“In 2012, the Senseable City Lab, part of MIT, conducted an experiment called Trash Track to see just what happens when someone takes out the trash. By attaching transmitters to over 3,000 pieces of rubbish they were able to track where that item went, whether they went to the correct recycling facility or not, and how far they traveled. Now move to the story in the papers last week about the Renew bins in London. It came to light that a dozen of London’s recycling bins fitted with digital screens were tracking each smartphone and device that connected to them with WiFi. It allowed advertisers to deduce whether the same phone — although not necessarily the same person — is passing by”

The war on African poaching: is militarization doomed to fail?

“Governments have given game rangers better weapons, engaged intelligence analysts, and put spotter planes, helicopters, and unmanned drones into the air. Some have deployed their national defense forces into national parks. Private wildlife custodians have spent millions on their own armed anti-poaching guards, sniffer dogs, mini-drones, and informants.  The continental-scale slaughter of rhinos and elephants continues to intensify, despite rising arrests and killings of poachers and increasing interdiction of illegal shipments of rhino horn and ivory.  Some drug policy experts liken the uphill battle against African poaching to the war on drugs, an extraordinarily expensive, bloody failure.”

Florida man arrested for ‘molesting a manatee’

“Florida resident Ryan William Waterman, 21, faces charges stemming from ‘molesting a manatee,’ due to the state’s protection laws that make interacting with the endangered species illegal. The Fort Pierce man published photos this week of himself and two children playing with a manatee calf laying near a shoreline, according to NBC affiliate WPTV. One image even features a child sitting on top of the animal.  The agency said Monday that investigators obtained an arrest warrant for Waterman based upon the photos on his Facebook page, charging him with a second-degree misdemeanor.”

Thai airport officials linked to rhino poaching

“Thai authorities said Tuesday they would seek arrest warrants for three police officers allegedly involved in trafficking rhino horn through Bangkok’s main airport.  The horn was brought into Suvarnabhumi Airport in January by Vietnamese migrant workers paid $500 per trip, said Narasak Hemnithi, commander of the Natural Resources Environmental Crime Division. ‘After arriving in Bangkok they were asked to put the rhino horn on a trolley and leave it somewhere nobody could see and then police would come and collect it,’ he told AFP. ‘We have evidence, especially closed circuit television footage,’ he added.”

Swiss wildlife officer convicted of poaching 131 animals

“The officer killed 87 roe deer, eight chamois, 26 hares, nine boar and an owl.  A fellow poacher illegally killed 12 roe deer, two hares and two boars, while another two hunters were sentenced earlier in the case.  The country’s top court ruled that federal law permits cantons and municipalities the right to see compensation for damages caused by poaching equivalent to the ‘value of the animal illegally killed’. When the case first went to trial in November 2009, the prosecutor described the four men as ‘an organized gang that brought the law into their own hands in the forests of Franches-Montagnes’ (a district in the canton of Jura).”

Animal torture, abuse called a ‘regular practice’ within federal wildlife agency

“The brutal approach by Wildlife Services is part of a culture of animal cruelty that has long persisted within an agency that uses taxpayer money to wage an unnecessary war on wildlife, according to two U.S. congressmen who have repeatedly called for a thorough investigation.  ‘This agency has become an outlet for people to abuse animals for no particular reason,’ Rep. John Campbell, R-Calif., told FoxNews.com. ‘It is completely out of control,’ he said. ‘They need to be brought into the 21st century.'”

Predators in Your Backyard?

“This 2010-11 BBC documentary, Predators in Your Backyard, shows how ‘Rewilding’ is being accomplished in the US and other places.  They state up front that this is a dangerous experiment but strangely fail to show the real downsides to the actual project. For instance, the BBC film would leave you believing that the reintroduction of wolves in the west has been an unparalled success.  The Predators in Your Backyard gives the viewer the impression  that efforts to reintroduce predators such as the wolf, bear and panther, into areas of human habitation are edgy projects but also entirely noble ones.”

Greenpeace ship defies Russia, enters Arctic route to protest against oil drilling

“The Arctic Sunrise was heading to the Kara Sea where several vessels contracted by Rosneft and ExxonMobil are conducting seismic testing to prepare for offshore drilling. Vladimir Chuprov, head of the Russian energy unit at Greenpeace, said the icebreaker was so far moving forward unhindered. Russian officials have said the ship owner was violating Russian law and the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.  The natural park is home to endangered species such as the bowhead whale and a major breeding ground for polar bears.  Putin has pledged to turn the Northern Sea Route into a key shipping artery, part of the Kremlin’s bid to mark out its stake over the energy-rich Arctic.”

Fracking protestors and their petro-sourced belongings

“Do anti-fracking protestors think nylon tents, PVC groundsheets, and plastics grow on trees? No doubt the tents also contain high tech synthetic fibre sleeping bags, and gas powered camp cookers.”
