Ohio University Considers Mandatory Re-Education Classes For Smokers

“Officials at Ohio University are considering mandatory classes for students who get caught smoking on campus as part of a draconian ban on smoking for the upcoming 2015-2016 academic year.  The ban will outlaw every use of cigarettes and e-cigarettes on any part of the 1,850-acre public university campus, reports The Athens News, the local newspaper.  Smokers won’t be able to take refuge in any designated smoking areas, either. The ban is utter and total.  Smoking bans are all the rage at colleges and universities across the country. This year, The College Fix notes, Ohio State, San Diego State and every public college in Georgia have instituted such bans.”

How Khan Academy (Free) Transformed an Inner-City School

“Khan Academy has 10 million students. They pay nothing. They are located all over the world.  Oakland Unity School in Oakland, California, is an inner-city charter school. It is over 90% black and Hispanic. It was a low achiever. Then it adopted Khan Academy’s math program. This school is now in the top ten schools in the state in math — in the 99th percentile.  Khan Academy teaches with YouTube videos and exercises. It also teaches motivation — character. Character makes the difference. IQ scores don’t.”

Truant in America

“Christian Regan, now 22 years old, has never gone to school in his life. Yet, you would never know by meeting him. He reads more than most adults. Christian’s dad said, ‘He basically taught himself how to read. There was no ‘A is Ahh, B is Buhh’. We would just read books to him. He’d watch us reading him books, and before long, he was reading them instead of us.’  Instead of going to school, Christian just went to work. When he was nine years old, he started his own business – a booth at the swap meet selling video games.  When Christian was 17 years old, he opened his first store on the front street of Lahaina. Within three months, he had five employees and the store was very successful.”

Mom Of Seven Dies In Prison After Judge Jailed Her For Kids’ Truancy

“The number of truancy violations charged to Dinino because her kids played hooky was coincidentally the same as her age: 55. They had been accumulating since 1999.  Under Pennsylvania law, parents can go to jail for five days for every single time their kids have an unexcused school absence.  Dinino had the option to pay $2,000 in fines but she couldn’t afford it, reports The Washington Post.  The sentencing judge, Dean R. Patton, said he sentenced the mother to jail reluctantly. He later criticized the sentencing guidelines he said he was required to follow.  ‘This lady didn’t need to be there,’ Patton said. ‘We don’t do debtors prisons anymore. That went out 100 years ago.'”

California Judge Throws Out Teacher Tenure

“The decision hands teachers’ unions a major defeat in a landmark case.  Judge Treu agreed with the plaintiffs’ argument that California’s current laws make it impossible to remove the system’s numerous low-performing and incompetent teachers, because the tenure system assures them a job essentially for life; that seniority rules requiring the newest teachers to be laid off first were harmful; and that granting tenure to teachers after only two years on the job was farcical, offering far too little time for a fair assessment of the teacher’s skills.  Further, Judge Treu said, the least effective teachers are disproportionately assigned to schools filled with low-income and minority students.”

Will SoFi Take Sallie Mae’s Best Customers?

“After the financial crisis proved the government would spend tens of trillions of dollars to keep banks from going belly up, you would think that nothing will kill them. But now the ineffable forces of Stanford-branded reinvention are going after their customers. Do investors in publicly traded lenders need to get out before it’s too late?  A case in point is student lending giant, SLM – formed as the Student Loan Marketing Association — which is in the cross-hairs of a San Francisco-based peer-to-peer lending powerhouse, Social Finance, Inc. (SoFi). As CEO Mike Cagney, a graduate of Stanford Business School, explained, SoFi is growing fast.”

When parents pay for college, student debt becomes a family affair

“Their collective student debt bill quickly grew to more than $500,000. Two of their children have managed to pay off their debt since graduating, but the couple is still strapped with more than $150,000 worth of loans and will add more to their load when their youngest son graduates next year.  Although their loans are federal and they have the option to apply for an income-based repayment plan, the Shippens were told their combined income was too high to qualify.  College costs have increased by nearly 30% over the last five years alone.  Nearly 30% of the 38 million federal student loan borrowers in the U.S. today are between 40 and 59 years old.

New York Fed Massively Disagrees With DOE’s Student Loan Default Data

“How high those delinquencies rates actually are, though, is an open question, which is turning into confusion on how to fix the problem.   The most dire assessment is that one in three borrowers trying to repay student loans was late by 90 days or more at the end of 2012, according to The Federal Reserve Bank of New York in April.  The U.S. Department of Education only publishes default statistics, and the official number of borrowers who default within two years of entering repayment is currently 10 percent. The default rate after three years is 14.7 percent.  The default rates have been widely criticized for not giving an accurate picture of the number of student loan borrowers in distress.”

Delinquent US student loans hit record high, over $100 billion past due

“The number and value of overdue student loans has reached an all-time high in the US as nearly a third of 20- to 24-year-olds are currently unemployed, according to a report by the Department of Education.  With continued concern regarding rising college costs, the amount of outstanding student loans has now reached $1 trillion, making that the largest category of consumer debt in the US aside from home mortgages.  According to the new report, eleven per cent of school loans – one hundred and ten billion dollars’ worth – are now seriously delinquent, meaning at least 90 days past due.  Bloomberg reports the employment rate for college graduates in the US is 87 per cent.”
