Who will pay more under Obamacare? Young men

“Obamacare limits the amount insurers can charge older enrollees to three times the amount charged for younger participants. Men usually pay less than women, since they typically visit the doctor less frequently. The Affordable Care Act, however, doesn’t allow insurers to charge different rates to men and women.  Taken together, men ages 25 to 36 could see rate increases greater than 50%, according to Milliman’s O’Connor, but women of the same age will only see their premiums creep up 4%. Meanwhile, men age 60 to 64 could see their premiums drop by 12%.”

How Mapping Student Debt Changes the Debate

“While soaring college tuition and low barriers to borrowing have been widely blamed, the New York Fed’s maps indicate that the worst employment environment in a generation has had a powerful effect. In fact, those states with high delinquency rates on student loans are having trouble with all kinds of debt. The regions on the map with the most red ink—the Deep South and Southeast—also have the highest consumer bankruptcy rates, according to the American Bankruptcy Institute.   The Fed’s report further connects the dots between the student debt crisis and the nation’s overall financial health. It also gives policymakers contemplating a bailout something to think about.”

Student Loans are About to Cross the Trillion Dollar Mark

“In the first quarter of 2013, students owed $986 billion in student loans, up $20 billion from $966 billion in the fourth quarter. Student-loan balances outstanding have soared 70% in the past five years, thanks to government backing of loan programs—which has done nothing but sent the price of a near useless education soaring.  Prices fall and quality improves where the government doesn’t intervene (see: cell phones, televisions  personal computers). Prices soar and quality fall where the government gets heavily involved (see: the health sector and education sector).”

The Government-Created “ME ME ME Generation”

“A generation educated in government schools, funded by government student loans, and unable to find jobs in a government/central bank twisted marketplace are called ‘lazy, entitled narcissists who still live with their parents.’  How shall the State solve this problem? Since obviously no one else possibly can…  How about some ‘Good Service’?  There you go.  The massive military empire, that has been at constant war for most (if not all) of our lives, can use some more recruits! Peace Corps, as they like to call it.  So of course! Why not force the ‘lazy, entitled narcissists’ to go out there to advance ‘U.S. foreign policy objectives’?”

Only Half Of College Grads Work Jobs That Require A Degree

EPJ13

“A college degree might not be worth the hassle and expense, according to a new study.  Almost half of four-year college graduates are working jobs that don’t require a bachelor’s degree, according to a study by McKinsey & Co. that asked 4,900 graduates about their careers after college.  Furthermore, around a third of college graduates said they did not feel that college had fully prepared them for the working world. Over half said they’d choose a different school or a different major if they could do it again.”

Devastating News for ObamaCare Backers

goodman_john_100x1332

“A new study finds that (as far as physical health is concerned) there is no difference between being in Medicaid and being uninsured.  It’s hard to exaggerate what a blow this is to the people who gave us the Affordable Care Act (ObamaCare). Everything about ObamaCare—from the money we are spending to the damage being done to the labor market to the hassles the whole nation is going through—depends on one central idea: that enrolling people in Medicaid will give them access to better health.”

Flying the Government Skies

“The sequester cuts about $637 million from the FAA, which is less than 4% of its $15.9 billion 2012 budget, and it limits the agency to what it spent in 2010. The White House decided to translate this 4% cut that it has the legal discretion to avoid into a 10% cut for air traffic controllers. Though controllers will be furloughed for one of every 10 working days, four of every 10 flights won’t arrive on time.  The FAA projects the delays will rob one out of every three travellers of up to four hours of their lives waiting at the major hubs. Congress passed a law in 2009 that makes such delays illegal — if they are the responsibility of an airline.”

USPS to raise stamp prices again, blames shrinking delivery volume

“The U.S. Postal Service board will look into hiking postage prices on all types of mail, as losses continue to plague the agency, the chief of the board said Friday. It would affect those sending first-class mail, the most common type of mail consumers use, as well as businesses that mail periodicals, newspapers, magazines and marketing material.   In the three months ended March 30, the agency lost $1.9 billion.  The service was hurt as the volume of first-class mail decreased by 4.3%, said USPS chief financial officer Joseph Corbett.  ‘It’s extremely difficult to compete with free,’ Corbett said, referring to electronic bill paying.”

Affordable Care Act Summary for Self-Employed, Unemployed, and Early Retirees

“Much of the discussion around The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) aka Affordable Care Act aka Obamacare has been about politics. For most full-time workers that wish to keep their employer-provided health insurance, little will change. However, things will be very different for the self-employed, unemployed, uninsured, and those seeking semi-retirement or early retirement. You can use it even if you already have employer-provided insurance, although you may become ineligible for certain tax credits. There’s way too much information to cover everything, but here’s my summary of the developments.”

Half of families suffer in NHS hospitals, study finds

“Despite tens of billions of pounds being invested in the NHS, 46 per cent of respondents said they thought standards of care had declined over the past ten years, while just 20 per cent thought standards had risen.  Sixteen per cent said they had personally experienced poor care, while another 30 per cent said their relatives had suffered poor care in the past decade – a total of 46 per cent.  The figures come in the wake of the Mid Staffs scandal, in which patients were found to be left drinking from flower vases because they were so neglected.  NHS casualty units have become like ‘warzones’ with medics fighting a losing battle to cope with an increasing tide of patients.”
