After JFK was killed, Truman letter called for the abolition of CIA covert ops

“Four months later, former CIA director Allen Dulles paid Truman a visit. Dulles tried to get Truman to retract what he had written in the Post.  ‘No dice, said Truman,’ according to McGovern/Marcus.  But four days later, in a formal memo for Lawrence Houston, the CIA’s general counsel, Dulles fabricated a retraction. He claimed that Truman told him the Washington Post article was ‘all wrong,’ and that Truman ‘seemed quite astounded at it.’  Truman denied it. In a June 10, 1964, letter to Look magazine, Truman restated his critique of covert action, emphasizing that he never intended the CIA to get involved in ‘strange activities.'”

NSA Helped British Spies Find Security Holes In Juniper Firewalls

“A top-secret document dated February 2011 reveals that British spy agency GCHQ, with the knowledge and apparent cooperation of the NSA, acquired the capability to covertly exploit security vulnerabilities in 13 different models of firewalls made by Juniper Networks, a leading provider of networking and Internet security gear.  The six-page document, titled ‘Assessment of Intelligence Opportunity – Juniper,’ raises questions about whether the intelligence agencies were responsible for or culpable in the creation of security holes disclosed by Juniper last week.”

Juniper Networks backdoor confirmed, password revealed, NSA suspected

“The next mystery to solve is where this unauthorized code comes from. Security advisories usually relate to vulnerabilities arising from defects — mistakes programmers made. In this case, someone deliberately inserted a backdoor password into Juniper’s devices. That’s a huge deal. If it’s the NSA (which looks possible, given one leak about a program called ‘FEEDTROUGH’ that installs persistent backdoors in Juniper devices) then it will mean that the US government deliberately sabotaged tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of networks that were protected by products from a US company that is the second-largest provider of networking equipment in the world, after Cisco.”

CIA director fumes over teen who hacked his AOL email account

“The head of the CIA says he was ‘outraged’ by a teenager’s hacking of his personal AOL email account.  Brennan didn’t explain why someone in his position still has an AOL account that a teenager was able to access.  The hacker said he used a reverse phone-number lookup to determine that Brennan has a Verizon Wireless account.  He then called the company, posing as a technician whose ‘tools were down’ to get details about the account, including Brennan’s AOL email address.  With that information, the teen called AOL and convinced a representative to reset the password, using Brennan’s personal details provided by Verizon.”

Europe’s highest court strikes down Safe Harbor data sharing between EU, US

“The case was originally sent to the CJEU by the High Court of Ireland, after the Irish data protection authority rejected a complaint from Maximillian Schrems, an Austrian citizen. He had argued that in light of Snowden’s revelations about the NSA, the data he provided to Facebook that was transferred from the company’s Irish subsidiary to the US under the Safe Harbour scheme was not, in fact, safely harboured. Advocate General Yves Bot of the CJEU agreed with Schrems that the EU-US Safe Harbour system did not meet the requirements of the Data Protection Directive, because of NSA access to EU personal data.”

Congress approves surveillance legislation tucked into budget package

“Congress on Friday adopted a $1.15 trillion spending package that included a controversial cybersecurity measure that only passed because it was slipped into the US government’s budget legislation.  House Speaker Paul Ryan, a Republican of Wisconsin, inserted the Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act (CISA) into the bill. The CISA part of the spending package gives corporate America legal immunity when sharing consumers’ private data about hacks and digital breaches with the Department of Homeland Security. The DHS can then funnel that information to other agencies, including the NSA and FBI, which can use that information for surveillance purposes.”

Juniper warns of backdoor spying code in firewalls

“Juniper, a major manufacturer of networking equipment, said on Thursday it found spying code planted in certain models of its firewalls, an alarming discovery that echoes of state-sponsored tampering.   The internal review uncovered two problems. One could allow remote administrative access to a ScreenOS device over telnet or SSH. The second vulnerability can allow an attacker who can monitor VPN traffic to decrypt it. VPNs are encrypted connections between a user and another computer and are often used by companies to allow secure remote access to their systems.  Disturbingly, Juniper wrote that ‘there is no way to detect that this vulnerability was exploited.'”

They have names like Cyberhawk, Yellowstone, Blackfin, Maximus, Cyclone, and Spartacus. Within the catalogue, the NSA is listed as the vendor of one device, while another was developed for use by the CIA, and another was developed for a special forces requirement. Nearly a third of the entries focus on equipment that seems to have never been described in public before.”
