The NSA’s Perversion of Privacy: The Most Outrageous Breaches

“Since the first story about how a secret court order gave the government access to millions of Verizon phone records, we’ve learned about many other overreaches by the federal government, including a government program that gains access to private information on popular services like Facebook, a tool the NSA can use to wiretap virtually anyone in the world, widespread spying on friendly foreign countries and even that the NSA has been infiltrating the online gaming world with forays into World of Warcraft. Here’s a roundup of some of the most unnerving stories about the NSA, starting before the Snowden revelations.”

Sophisticated Spy Tool ‘The Mask’ Rages Undetected for 7 Years

“Stuxnet was reportedly created by the U.S. and Israel. There are no signs that Mask was created by the same group. Kaspersky instead found evidence that the attackers may be native Spanish speakers. Raiu said it’s the first APT malware they’ve seen with Spanish language snippets; usually, it’s Chinese.  Kaspersky believes the espionage operation belongs to a nation state because of its sophistication and because of an exploit the attackers used that the Kaspersky researchers believe may have been sold to the attackers by Vupen, a company in France that sells zero-day exploits to law enforcement and intelligence agencies.”

‘Welcome to the United States of paranoia’

“‘This is not some far-out Orwellian scenario,’ wrote the late William Safire of The New York Times in 2002, in the panicky aftermath of 9/11. ‘Here is what will happen to you: Every purchase you make with a credit card, every magazine subscription you buy and medical prescription you fill, every Web site you visit and e-mail you send or receive . . . will go into what the Defense Department describes as ‘a virtual, centralized grand database.’ ’  Twelve years on, this is the world we live in, but worse. Through a combination of fear, cowardice, political opportunism and bureaucratic metastasis, the erstwhile land of the free has been transformed into a nation of closely watched subjects.”

Terror Defendant Challenges Evidence Gathered by NSA Spying

“A U.S. terrorism defendant who was formally notified that he was spied on by the NSA filed a challenge to the constitutionality of the surveillance today, in a case likely to be litigated all the way to the Supreme Court.  Jamshid Muhtorov, a native of Uzbekistan who immigrated to Colorado, is one of only two criminal defendants the government has conceded was charged on the basis of evidence scooped up by the NSA’s surveillance programs. The Supreme Court last year rejected a suit challenging the law because the civil rights groups and others who brought the case could not prove their communications were intercepted, and hence didn’t have ‘standing’ to sue.”

Forget Metadata … The NSA Is Spying On EVERYTHING

“The NSA’s spying on everyone’s metadata can tell them just about everything about us … and it violates our Constitutional right to freedom of association.  But people are getting distracted from the big picture by focusing on metadata.  As just one example, there is substantial evidence from top NSA and FBI whistleblowers that the government is recording the content of our calls and emails … word-for-word.  So what should we make of the government’s denials that it records content?  Given that the government has been caught lying about spying again and again, I’m not sure how much weight we should give to such denials.”

Spy Agencies Work On Psychologically Profiling Everyone

“Newly-released documents from Edward Snowden show that the NSA and other spy agencies are tracking people’s psychological and lifestyle traits such as sexual preference, extroversion-versus-introversion, and whether people are leaders or followers.”

US looks at ways to prevent spying on its spying

“The U.S. government is looking at ways to prevent anyone from spying on its own surveillance of Americans’ phone records.  As the Obama administration considers shifting the collection of those records from the National Security Agency to requiring that they be stored at phone companies or elsewhere, it’s quietly funding research to prevent phone company employees or eavesdroppers from seeing whom the U.S. is spying on, The Associated Press has learned.  Under the research, U.S. data mining would be shielded by secret coding that could conceal identifying details from outsiders and even the owners of the targeted databases, according to public documents and interviews.”

Angry Birds Says It Didn’t Purposely Share Private Data With NSA

“Rovio, the Finnish software company behind the Angry Birds game, has announced it will ‘re-evaluate’ its relationship with advertising networks following revelations that the NSA and its UK counterpart GCHQ have the capability to ‘piggyback’ on the private user data they collect.  In a statement released in the wake of the story, Rovio’s chief executive said the company would examine its business relationships, but also called for the wider industry to respond to spy agencies’ use of commercial data traversing the web.  Rovio’s CEO referred to the need to balance the ability of websites to make money with user privacy amid the NSA revelations as ‘the most important conversation to be had’.”

Alfred McCoy: It’s About Blackmail, Not National Security

“For an imperial power losing its economic grip on the planet and heading into more austere times, the NSA’s latest technological breakthroughs look like a bargain basement deal when it comes to projecting power and keeping subordinate allies in line.  Even when disaster turned out to be attached to them, the NSA’s surveillance programs have come with such a discounted price tag that no Washington elite rejected them.  For well over a century, from the pacification of the Philippines in 1898 to trade negotiations with the European Union today, surveillance and its kissing cousins, scandal and scurrilous information, have been key weapons in Washington’s search for global dominion.”
