Fortress is forming a Bitcoin fund

“Fortress Investment Group (FIG) is prepping its own Bitcoin fund, which likely will be much larger than the SecondMarket offering.  My understanding is that the Fortress effort will be something like an unlisted currency ETF (similar to Bitcoin Investment Trust), with Fortress also perhaps raising a separate vehicle to back Bitcoin-related startups. And there likely is some relationship to a new Bitcoin-related fund raised by Pantera Capital, a San Francisco-based hedge fund whose clients are known to include several Fortress executives. Pantera founder Dan Morehead declined to discuss his Bitcoin efforts but an SEC filing indicates that he already has raised around $150 million for Bitcoin vehicle.”

Bitcoin start-up nabs Goldman board member

“M. Michele Burns, a finance industry veteran who sits on the board of Goldman Sachs is joining the board of Circle Internet Financial, a Boston start-up that is building a payment processing system for Bitcoin.  Circle launched earlier this year, and was founded by Jeremy Allaire, who has led other Internet start-ups, but recently has become a Bitcoin evangelist. The company got $9 million in funding from a number of venture capitalist firms. Jim Breyer, a partner at Accel and an early backer of Facebook (FB), is also on Circle’s board, as is Raj Date, who recently left a top post at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.”

Deutsche Bank Exits Commodity Trading, Fires 200

logo3

“Germany’s largest bank (whose total notional derivative exposure relative to German GDP has to be seen to be believed), which was one of the top-five financial players in commodities, will cease energy, agriculture, base metals, coal and iron ore trading, it said in a statement. What will DB keep? Drumroll: only precious metals alongside a limited number of financial derivatives traders. Because one always need to be able to sell ‘paper-backed’ gold derivatives in order to keep the price of gold low while the NY Fed keeps procuring the hundreds of tons of physical gold demanded by the Bundesbank.”

Why Gordon Brown sold Britain’s gold at a knock-down price [2012]

“When Brown decided to dispose of almost 400 tonnes of gold between 1999 and 2002, he did two distinctly odd things.  First, he broke with convention and announced the sale well in advance, giving the market notice that it was shortly to be flooded and forcing down the spot price. This was apparently done in the interests of ‘open government’, but had the effect of sending the spot price of gold to a 20-year low, as implied by basic supply and demand theory.  Second, the Treasury elected to sell its gold via auction, which  frequently achieved a lower price than the equivalent fix price.  It seemed almost as if the Treasury was trying to achieve the lowest price possible for the public’s gold. It was.”

Dubious ‘bankster’ behind Russia’s bid to trademark Bitcoin

“The chief of a bank that was shut down over money laundering has reportedly applied to register the trademark for the popular cryptocurrency bitcoin. If successful, Russia could become the first country to register the anonymous currency.  The company applied to trademark a bitcoin logo with a capital letter ‘B’ inside a circle and other Russian companies are reportedly interested in trade marks.  Sberbank, Russia’s largest bank, hasn’t ruled out launching an e-commerce system similar to bitcoin, which would be managed by Yandex.Money. Bank chief German Gref said the Yandex.Money payment system would help smooth online purchases, and would be safer than bitcoins.”

It’s Hard to Summon Sympathy for Big Banks

“It may not be easy to be sympathetic to the big banks, but it is easy to understand their surprise and frustration. They have gone from being viewed as national champions — proof of a country’s standing in the world — to being seen as a potential source of national disaster. Iceland and Ireland went broke because they had to, or chose to, bail out their irresponsible banks.  Eric H. Holder Jr., the attorney general, did not help when he said last spring that the Justice Department had to keep in mind that filing criminal charges against a large bank could ‘have a negative impact on the national economy, perhaps even the world economy.’ He quickly backtracked, but the perception was reinforced.”

Bitcoin Believers See a Role for Wall Street

“A venture capitalist, a former regulator, a lawyer and a pair of entrepreneurs gathered on Tuesday in the private dining room of an upscale Manhattan restaurant to discuss their vision of a world in which the currency plays a role in mainstream finance.  ‘We’re in inning one of a nine-inning game,’ said Chris Daniel, a lawyer at Paul Hastings who represents Circle Internet Financial.  The event, held at A Voce in Time Warner Center, showcased the arguments that some of Bitcoin’s most influential advocates are using to promote the currency’s adoption. They insisted that Bitcoin could one day become widely used in money transfers and payments large and small.”

SecondMarket CEO: Wall Street Will Put ‘Hundreds of Millions’ Into Bitcoin

“Silbert says the BIT is in conversations with ‘several major banks’ and he expects the trust to be an approved product on their wealth-management platforms within the first half of 2014.  The second wave will be hedge funds and other institutional investors. ‘The principals that work at all those firms are starting to invest personally in the BIT,’ Silbert says. Anecdotally, he adds, it’s clear they are investing in the Bitcoin market through other platforms as well. With traders, portfolio managers and executives all gaining interest, it appears to be only a matter of time before their firms follow suit and take a position in the digital currency.  The third wave will be Wall Street banks themselves.”

Bitcoin fund raises $65 million after first two months, founder says

“A fund established to offer investors exposure to Bitcoin is holding around $65 million in the digital currency after two months in operation, its creator, SecondMarket Chief Executive Officer Barry Silbert, said on Wednesday.  Silbert told a group of journalists at his company’s New York headquarters the fund, named the Bitcoin Investment Trust, has 90 investors, among them hedge fund traders and private family investment firms.  The BIT is structured like an electronically traded fund and modeled, according to Silbert, after one of the most prominent gold ETFs, but it is not publicly traded and will not be for several more years. SecondMarket launched the fund at the end of September.”
